BIOGRAPHY: Albert Kotin (August 7, 1907 - February 6, 1980) was a Russian-born American abstract expressionist painter and a member of the early New York School. Born in Minsk, Russian Empire, he emigrated to the United States in 1908 and became a U.S. citizen in 1923. He studied at the National Academy of Design, with Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown, at several academies in Paris, and later with Hans Hofmann under the G.I. Bill. He participated in the Federal Art Project (PWAP and WPA/FAP), completing two WPA murals for the Kearney, New Jersey, post office in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II (1941-1945). After the war, he joined the Downtown Group and the Artists' Club. He was chosen by his peers to exhibit in the historic Ninth Street Show of 1951 and participated in all invitational New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals from 1953 to 1957. Kotin was also a poet. Alexander Calder once wrote, "As long as there are people such as Al Kotin, there is no danger to art." He died of lung cancer in New York City in 1980.

From 1941 to 1945, he served in World War II in the U.S. Army Engineering School and then taught at City College of New York (1952-1961), and other institutions for briefer periods of time including Long Island University and Southern Illinois University. Albert Kotin participated in the famous 9th St. Exhibition in 1951. He also participated in the New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals 1953-1957 at the Stable Gallery, New York City. Kotin died in New York City in 1980. Albert Kotin was among the notable first wave of Abstract Expressionists.

From 1941 to 1945, he served in World War II in the U.S. Army Engineering School and then taught at City College of New York (1952-1961), and other institutions for briefer periods of time including Long Island University and Southern Illinois University. Albert Kotin participated in the famous 9th St. Exhibition in 1951. He also participated in the New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals 1953-1957 at the Stable Gallery, New York City. Kotin died in New York City in 1980. Albert Kotin was among the notable first wave of Abstract Expressionists.
