Roy G. Krenkel "The Fall of Edessa" illustration from The Lion of Tiberias.

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

          73. Roy G. Krenkel “The Fall of Edessa” illustration from The Lion of Tiberias. (ca. 1960s-1970s) Accomplished in pencil and ink on 11.5 x 15.5 in. vellum tipped to a 15 x 20 in. backing board. A magnificent and large scene, likely published. Well-known for his covers and fantasy work of the 1960s and 70s, and his close association with Frank Frazetta, Krenkel’s love and specialty was creating classical scenes such as this one. Few are as large, finished, and majestic as this major Krenkel work. Hand-titled by the artist in the lower border, “‘The Fall of Edessa’ - from The Lion of Tiberias”. Vellum remains flat, bright and without warping. In fine condition. $4,000 - $6,000

It is the finest color study I’ve ever seen by Roy. Nothing comes close to it. This piece embodies the mind of Krenkel more than any other piece I have ever seen. Pure fantasy, pure heroism. $1,000 - $2,000

          Est: $1,000 - $2,000

          89. Roy Krenkel “Dian of Pellucidar”. (1962) Accomplished in colored pencil on 10 x 12 in. artist leaf. This piece is the original art that got Roy hired at ACE paperbacks in 1962. Wollheim wanted an example of a St. John-style illustration. Roy drew this. Wollheim loved it and offered Roy the job. Roy got Frank on board and the rest, as they say, is history. Historically significant and a damn fine drawing in its own right. Roy sold it to Capt. George in Toronto (of the vast Whiz-Bang organization), a legendary early publisher of fanzines and bootlegs. He was a seminal person in early fandom. I saw the piece on the wall of his shop in Toronto while attending graduate school. Capt George told me the story and I confirmed it with Krenkel. If this particular set of circumstances had not come together, then what would have happened to Frank’s career? Interesting to ponder. $1,000 - $2,000

Howard's novel, On the Road to Azrael, published by Donald M Grant, 1979, which collected five of Howard's Far Eastern tales, stories of a shadow period in which individual deeds have been lost in an era of massive battles and fateful wars. Roy Krenkel's style was a perfect fit for Howard's somber moodiness. The book was meant to serve as a companion volume to The Sowers of the Thunder, published in 1973. From the Frank Collection.
