The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. In 1967 the Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints. The catalogue states that Walt Kuhn's prints are of the greatest rarity. Of certain subjects only one to six impressions exist. Others vary in number of impressions, but none exceed fifty of any subject. The catalogue also says - Walt Kuhn's position in the ranks of our foremost American painters has long been assured. What is less familiar to the general public - and indeed to many collectors and institutions - is his work in the graphic media. With the exception of a few examples shown during his lifetime, the greater portion of his prints has remained locked up and forgotten in a warehouse these many years. On the occasion of the first major exhibition of his paintings to be held in New York in several decades, it is our privilege to show the etchings and lithographs that place Walt Kuhn among the most venturesome and exciting graphic artists of the 1920s and 30s. Of the 50 etchings listed in the Kennedy exhibition 41 are in the 6 or less impressions category, with 9 known to have up to 50 impressions. WE ARE NOT SURE HOW MANY PRINTS WERE PULLED from this plate. Many of you already know that we own the original Walt Kuhn etching plates.

                      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) Original metal etching plate, title unknown, c. 1920s , 5-3/4 x 4-5/8 in. Walt Kuhn was born in Brooklyn, and after a period of study art in Europe, he returned to the US to work as a cartoonist; illustrator, and developing artist. Aware of the great surge of modernist artistic activity in Europe, he joined with others to encourage Arthur B. Davies to get behind the idea of bringing a great European modernist art show to the US, and traveled with Davies to Europe to select art for the occasion (which became the 1913 Armory Show). Negligee was probably done c. 1920 when Kuhn, Davies, and a few others in the US were experimenting with modernism as they developed their printmaking skills. Kuhn successfully continued printmaking and painting in a modernist mode for the next 30 or so years. VG.

                      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) American artist. By now most of you know that we have most of what came from the Kuhn Estate that didn't end up in the collection of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian, Washington DC [paintings & drawings not included]. So when you see letters, documents etc. on the market offered by others those items most likely came from our collection. Offered here is a rare Walt Kuhn etching plate. The title is NOT KNOWN, approx. 5-7/8 x 3-1/4 in. Now here is the important part that makes this so RARE. Firstly, very few impressions were ever pulled from this plate. Secondly, any time an etching plate is offered for sale, no matter who the artist is, that is very uncommon. Plates usually are defaced after they have been printed from. We owned all of Kuhn remaining etching plates. It is almost impossible to get a picture/scan that will show clearly. VG.

[ART] WALT KUHN (1877-1949), American painter. After studying in many European countries, he helped organize the famous Armory Show (International Exhibition of Modern Art, New York City, 1913). He is noted chiefly for his vigorous studies of circus performers, chorines, and trapeze athletes. His Blue Clown (1931, Whitney Museum, New York City) is the most popular example of his work. He also did a number of brilliant still lifes, as well as designs for musical reviews. Kuhn helped introduce the techniques and theories of modern art to the American public and to many American artists. Offered here are twenty-seven handwritten letters- twenty-five [25] letters are from 1943, one is 1940 & the last is 1948, the year before Walt died. Most are two pages on 8 x 11 in. sheets. The majority of the letters were written from Ogunquit, Maine where the Kuhn's owned a home with a studio. At the end of 1948 he had a nervous breakdown. In some of his letters he starts to wonder about his mental abilities. Walts' letters run the gamut of town gossip to art gossip mentioning names of artists who summered in Ogunquit, war activity near Ogunquit off Boone Island, descriptions of the areas where he paints, his feelings about tourists, how his painting is going, his art patrons and dealers. A Colliers article about Walts' paintings is mentioned in a few letters and a copy of the article goes with the group. One letter is answering a question from a Chicago woman about a version of the 1913 Armory Show held there. The only archive of Kuhn's letters still in private hands. VG

Walt Kuhn ( (1877-1949) American painter

                      Est: $150 - $200

[ART] Walt Kuhn ( (1877-1949) American painter and an organizer of the famous Armory Show of 1913, which was America's first large-scale introduction to European Modernism. Walt Kuhn is best remembered today for his key role in planning the Armory Show. Ironically, a man who was in the forefront of the modern movement and was seen as an advocate of adventurous new art in 1913 came to be labelled, because of his on-going commitment to representation, a conservative artist by future generations of art historians. Nevertheless, he holds a place in American art history as a skilled cartoonist, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter. Although he destroyed many of his early paintings, his works that remain today are powerful and are a part of most major American art collections. His portraits of circus and vaudeville entertainers are some of the most memorable, confidently painted works of twentieth-century American art. They are reminiscent of commedia dell'arte actor portraits done by the French masters centuries earlier. The Tragic Comedians (1916) in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and The White Clown (1929) in the collection of the National Gallery of Art are intense, arresting images and are among his most respected paintings. Offered here is a 2-3/4 x 4-1/4 in. paper card on which several notes for himself - things to do. Writes: Circus opens Wed. Apr. 7 - closes Sun. May 9, etc. Not signed by Kuhn of course. Provenance: Kuhn Estate in Maine..

VG.

VG.

A Colliers article about Walts' paintings is mentioned in a few letters and a copy of the article goes with the group. One letter is answering a question from a Chicago woman about a version of the 1913 Armory Show held there. The only archive of Kuhn's letters still in private hands. VG

WALT KUHN [1877-1949] RARE Original Etching Plate

                      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL etching plate of a female nude, identified as NUDE WITH LONG HAIR. An example of this print was included in the 1967 Kennedy Galleries exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints and was indicated that there were only from 1 to 6 prints ever pulled from this plate. Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 5-1/2 x 3-1/2 in. Very seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the open market as they usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture showing here isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signature into the plate, which was his normal practice. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials, this was seldom. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. Picture of Kuhn is NOT included here.

The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below is NOT for sale. Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during which it was indicated that there were less than 50 impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original plates by major artists seldom reach the open market and it is remarkable to see a plate that had so few prints pulled from it. A must for the SERIOUS Kuhn collector.

RARE Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) Original metal etching plate

VG.

Kuhn had the habit of keeping copies of letters sent to others, and actually signing them. This letter was his retained copy to the water dept. in Kennebunk & Wells, Maine, which also covered Ogunquit back then. Kuhn says that they didn't use their Maine cottage during the past season, water pipes not connected, therefore he did not pay a water bill. A day later the water dept. sends Kuhn a letters basically saying that if he had just sent them a letter before the billing to let them know he would not have gotten a bill. They cancelled the charge for 1935. Although this letter seems rather routine you should know that Walt Kuhn throughout his life was often a difficult person with others. By the 1940s, KuhnÃ
