WILHELM KUMM (GERMAN, B. 1861) BRONZE FIGURE OF GAIUS MUCIUS SCAEVOLA, male figure standing beside a brazier/fire pot stand, depicting the Roman hero Gaius Mucius Scaevola known for holding his hand in the fire to prove his courage to King Lars Porsena, signed in the casting "W Kumm / No. 41" with the foundry mark for Aktien-Gesellschaft Gladenbeck (Berlin, Germany, 1851-1926), the whole is mounted to a circular brown variegated marble plinth with the underside having various markings. Fourth quarter 19th/early 20th century. 13 1/4" HOA, 6" D base.

Chr. die Stadt Rom rettete, indem er nach gescheitertem Attentat auf den Etruskerkönig Lars Porseanna und der Drohung durch diesen, den Flammen übergeben zu werden, seine rechte Hand mit den Worten: "Mein Körper ist wertlos, aber meine Ehre nicht" in offenes Feuer steckte, dies führte zu seiner Freilassung und anschließenden Friedensverhandlungen sowie dem Ende der Belagerung Roms, geringe Bereibungen und Altersspuren, nicht ganz komplett, H 105 cm. Nach einem Studium an der Gewerbeschule Hamburg studierte er ab 1881 an der Kunstgewerbeschule Berlin und anschließend als Schüler von Fritz Schaper an der Berliner Akademie. 1892 erhielt er das Stipendium der 2. Beer’schen Stiftung. Seine Marmorstatue des Mucius Scaevola wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet. 1894 hatte er einen Aufenthalt in Rom, danach lebte er in Berlin und siedelte 1934 nach Hamburg. This statue is marked by the Berlin foundry Aktiengesellschaft Gladenbeck, around 1900; height 52.5 cm (20,6”).
