      Mar. 05, 2022

RUSSIAN SOVIET OIL PAINTING BY ALEXANDER KUPRIN

      Est: $100 - $150

Alexander Kuprin (Alexandre Kouprine) (Russian Soviet, 1880-1960) oil painting on canvas depicting a still life. Signed lower right. Additionally signed and illegibly dated on the back. Framed. Inscribed, to M. Gavrilenko from the grateful Barabanovs, on the back. Alexander Vasilievich Kuprin, a Russian and Soviet landscape painter, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts, member and exhibitor of the Jack of Diamonds associations (1911-1916, founding member, in 1916 - chairman of the board); World of Art (1917-1921); Moscow painters (1925-1928); Genesis (1926–1927); OMC (1928–1932). Kuprins work developed in line with post-impressionism and cubism. He was a pure Cezannist, the most nervous and dramatic, his still lifes retained the power of color and plasticity even when the former Jacks muffled their natural temperament and renamed themselves into Moscow Painters (1925) and the Society of Moscow Artists (1928). One of a kind artwork.

Nikolsky, Aleksandr Vasilievich Kuprin, Moscow, Vsekokhudozhnik, 1935, p. 43, illustrated; p. 104, listed under works from 1928. Alexander Kuprin was a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group at the start of the 20th century and one of the most prominent Soviet painters. He is represented here by this landmark canvas from his Crimean period, Twilight Landscape. Churuk-Su River, Bakhchisarai, which dates from late 1920s. Kuprin was a graduate of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, a student of Konstantins Yuon and Korovin, and one of the most passionate adepts of French avant-garde experiments. The artist paid his first visit to the Crimea in 1907, whence he wrote in a letter to his wife, Anastasia Polozantseva, that there is sufficient material here to last an artist for not one, but several lifetimes. However, it was not until the late 1920s, that Kuprin produced his best Crimean landscapes, characteristic for their inner harmony and expressive form. As the art critic Viktor Nikolsky wrote in his 1935 monograph on Kuprin, the artist made annual pilgrimages to Bakhchisarai from 1926 to 1930 and never tired of his artistic love-affair with this neglected corner of the Crimea. Kuprin's landscapes of the time are remarkable for their expressiveness and freedom of brushwork. They show to best effect the artist's skill in conveying a sense of volume and the rhythm of architectural forms. But while formalist experiments had previously taken centre stage in Kuprin's work, the Bakhchisarai landscapes of the late 1920s reveal a deeply lyrical approach to their subject. Here, as never before, we can see how Kuprin was bewitched by the carefree atmosphere of what Nikolsky called this lazy, sleepy southern town. Twilight Landscape. Churuk-Su River. Bakhchisarai is the only work of Kuprin's Bakhchisarai cycle to remain in private hands. The others have long been the pride of Russian museum collections: Bakhchisarai. Churuk-Su. Evening (1930) in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and Bakhchisarai. Churuk-Su.Noon (1927) hangs in the Russian Museum in St Petersburg.

The name of Alexander Kuprin is associated with a particularly interesting time in Soviet Russian art. In the 1920s and 1930s extraordinary talents came to light which were able to advance the new Russian painting and assert its importance on an international scale. From 1910 Kuprin took part in every one of the Jack of Diamonds exhibitions, impressing those who viewed his work with the expressive power of his painting and opening up new horizons for Russian art. All of the artist's work of that time is unusually picturesque, incisive in composition and rich and bright in palette. As with many other members of the Jack of Diamonds group, a change in Kuprin's creative manner occurred at the very beginning of the 1930s, when persecution was stepped up against formalistic painting and an inevitable search for compromise radically transformed the figurative styles of practically every member of the most progressive creative group of the time - the Jack of Diamonds . Alexander Kuprin's late works are painted according to the Moscow school's canons of classic landscape realism. The peaceful colours and calibrated compositions are far removed from the artist's restless experimentation of the first quarter of the century. The shift in his manner of painting did not happen immediately, but rather year by year. The distinct planes of colour vanished, the expression disappeared, his brushstrokes became finer and the elements of landscape ever more reminiscent of classic examples of the Russian landscape tradition. At the same time the artist's work acquired a distinctive gauzy, romantic air creating an atmosphere of lyricism. The present lot, Peski. Landscape with a Boat and Female Figure , in which there is a feeling of extraordinary spiritual peace and heartfelt joy in communing with nature, is a perfect example of this.
