Shiro Kuramata Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1934 - d. 1991

Shiro Kuramata (29 November 1934 – 1 February 1991) is one of Japan's most important designers of the 20th century.

Kuramata was born in 1934. He was part of a generation of Japanese creatives born just before the outbreak of Second World War, who are considered to have transformed the way Japan was viewed by the outside world.

This generation included Kuramata's friends and collaborators who were famous members of the Japanese design and architecture circle at the time, including Issey Miyake, Yokoo Tadanori, Isozaki Arata, and Tadao Ando.

Kuramata studied architecture at the Tokyo Technical College before 1953 and was trained as a cabinet maker at the Kuwasawa Institute of Design in Tokyo in 1954, after which he worked for multiple companies such as the furniture producer Teikoku. In 1965, he established Kuramata Design Office in Tokyo and in 1981 received the Japanese Cultural Prize for design.[3] From the mid-1960s onwards, Kuramata began exploring materials and forms through his unique designs. His work merged popular culture, Japanese aesthetic concepts, and the Western avant-garde.

At the end of the 1980s, Kuramata was invited by Ettore Sottsass to be a founding member of the Italian design collaborative Memphis Group.

In 1990 the French government awarded Kuramata the distinguished Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of his outstanding contribution to art and design.

SHIRO KURAMATA (Tokyo, 1934- 1991) for CAPELLINI. "Revolving cabinet, 1970. Red plastic and black metal. Dimensions: 192 cm (height). Shiro Kuramata's Revolving Cabinet, designed in 1970, is an exceptional example of his innovative, avant-garde approach to furniture design. This twenty-drawer revolving cabinet captures the essence of Kuramata's minimalist and futuristic aesthetic, combined with intelligent functionality. The Revolving Cabinet features a rectangular main body. Its unique design lies in its ability to rotate 360 degrees, allowing easy accessibility to the objects stored inside from any angle. It is composed of multiple compartments, hidden mechanisms and sliding shelves, which offer great versatility and organisation in the storage of objects. The choice of materials, transparency and the use of visible mechanisms give this piece a modern and elegant appearance. Shiro Kuramata, born in Tokyo in 1934, was one of the most influential designers of the Japanese avant-garde in the second half of the 20th century. He graduated from the Tokyo National School of Design in 1953 and then worked for an architecture and design firm. Kuramata founded his own design studio in 1965, where he began experimenting with unconventional materials and innovative forms. Throughout his career, Kuramata was noted for his distinctive style and his ability to fuse Western and Eastern aesthetics in his designs. His unconventional approach and experimentation with new materials allowed him to create unique, cutting-edge furniture that challenged traditional design conventions. In addition to the Revolving Cabinet, Shiro Kuramata is known for other iconic pieces such as the Glass Chair and the Miss Blanche Chair. His work has been exhibited in museums around the world and has been recognised with numerous awards and distinctions. Although Shiro Kuramata passed away in 1991, his legacy lives on as an inspiration to designers and lovers of art and design. His ability to take beauty and functionality to a new level remains a source of admiration and his influence on the world of design continues to this day.
