WILLIAM L''ENGLE (1885-1957): WRESTLERS

Lot 76: WILLIAM L''ENGLE (1885-1957): WRESTLERS

Auction Date: Jan 25, 2017

Estimate: $300 - $500

Description: WILLIAM L''ENGLE (1885-1957): WRESTLERS
Watercolor on paper, 1929, signed with initials ''W.L.E.'' lower right, titled, dated and inscribed ''N.Y.C.'' lower left. 20 1/2 x 14 in. (sheet), 27 x 21 in. (frame).

Note: William L''Engle and his wife, the artist Lucy Brown L''Engle, summered in Provincetown, MA and were part of the art colony there from 1916 until 1924 when they moved to nearby Truro. The couple was central to the artistic community on the Cape at the time, socializing with William and Marguerite Zorach, Childe Hassam, Blanche Lazelle and Eugene O''Neill (see lot 118). L''Engle was interested in the "new way of seeing" that was being explored by American artists who had studied in Europe and brought back with them ideas about painting and music. His subjects were often related to the world of entertainment; dancers, athletes and acrobats figure often in his compositions. L''Engle was interested in the body in motion and how to represent that with the drawn line. This drawing of wrestlers is a good example of his talent as a draftsman in creating a sense of movement and three-dimensionality with the spare use of line and color.

N.B. William L'Engle received his artistic training at the Art Students League in New York, the Academie Julian, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and met his artist wife Lucy Brown while studying abroad. He worked for most of his life in the figurative tradition, creating portraits and genre scenes of Provincetown, but in the early 1950s began to experiment with abstraction. The present work is an example from his Weather Map series, where he used New York Times daily national weather map forecasts as the basis for his depictions of the Cape and Islands. (1)
