Rene Lalique Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1860 - d. 1945

René Jules Lalique (6 April 1860 – 1 May 1945) was a French jeweller, medallist, and glass designer known for his creations of glass art, perfume bottles, vases, jewellery, chandeliers, clocks, and automobile hood ornaments. Lalique's early life was spent learning the methods of design and art he would use in his later life. At the age of two, his family moved to the suburbs of Paris, but traveled to Aÿ for summer holidays. These trips influenced Lalique later on in his naturalistic glasswork. With the death of his father, Lalique began working as an apprentice to goldsmith Louis Aucoc in Paris. Lalique died on 1 May or 5 May 1945, in Paris. René Lalique was buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France. His granddaughter, Marie Claude-Lalique (b. 1936), was also a glass maker. She died on 14 April 2003 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Measurements: 15 x 13,5 x 13,5 cm. Pressure molded glass vase manufactured by René Lalique in the thirties or forties. The glass has been decorated with reliefs representing horses. The firm Lalique was founded by René Jules Lalique, one of the most prominent glassmakers of the time, and one of the first to sculpt glass for great monumental works, such as the fountains of the Champs Elysées. He enjoyed great recognition thanks to his original creations of jewelry, perfume bottles, glasses, plates, etc., within the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. He trained with the Parisian jeweler Louis Aucoq, and then continued his studies at Sudenham Art College in London. The excellence of his creations and the taste he applied to his works earned him important commissions for the interior decoration of ships, trains such as the Orient Express, churches such as St. Nicasius in Reims and numerous religious and civil goldsmiths. Lalique was not content with designing their models, but also founded a factory to produce large quantities, patenting several innovative manufacturing processes of glass, and various technical effects such as "satin Lalique" or opalescent glass. Lalique pieces are preserved in prominent museums such as the Corning Museum of Glass and the Metropolitan in New York, the Louvre or the Orsay in Paris, among many others.

RENÉ LALIQUE (1860-1945) QUATRE FIGURINES FEMMES FORMANT SOUTIEN VASE, CP409 designed 1921cire perdue, and sepia stainedsigned R. LALIQUE, engraved France 16.7cm high This piece was exhibited in the Paris Exposition of 1925.Cire perdue meaning literally ‘lost wax’ – is a technique more usually associated with bronze making and dates back to ancient times.  A wax model would be covered in plaster and then heated so that the liquid wax could be poured off and then replaced with molten glass.  When cooled, the plaster mould would be destroyed to reveal the glass within.  René Lalique used this technique when experimenting with designs – in many cases these were his prototypes. Cire perdue pieces are almost always unique because of the method used to create them and consequently there are only a limited number of these works in existence. The works have a distinctive appearance – the surfaces are rougher and appear unfinished, and even seamlines are sometimes evident.  They are uncoloured glass, sometimes with staining applied to the surface.  One of the very appealing features, though, is that Lalique’s own finger-prints may remain, giving a sense of intimacy with the maker.

RENÉ LALIQUE (1860-1945) VICTOIRE CAR MASCOT, NO. 1147 designed 1928clear and frostedmoulded R. LALIQUE FRANCElater mount(2) 15.5cm high excluding base, 26cm long During the 1920s and early 1930s it became fashionable to mount mascots on cars, so René Lalique designed 29 different models. Perhaps the best known is the Victoire mascot of 1928. The piece speaks of modernity and is full of drama as the head strains forward, the hair is swept backwards, and the mouth wide open. This is a personification of speed in the golden age of the motor car, and also a status symbol of wealth. The mascot could be illuminated, enhanced with coloured light filters and dynamos that intensified the light as the speed of the car increased.
