Rene Lalique Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1860 - d. 1945

René Jules Lalique (6 April 1860 – 1 May 1945) was a French jeweller, medallist, and glass designer known for his creations of glass art, perfume bottles, vases, jewellery, chandeliers, clocks, and automobile hood ornaments. Lalique's early life was spent learning the methods of design and art he would use in his later life. At the age of two, his family moved to the suburbs of Paris, but traveled to Aÿ for summer holidays. These trips influenced Lalique later on in his naturalistic glasswork. With the death of his father, Lalique began working as an apprentice to goldsmith Louis Aucoc in Paris. Lalique died on 1 May or 5 May 1945, in Paris. René Lalique was buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France. His granddaughter, Marie Claude-Lalique (b. 1936), was also a glass maker. She died on 14 April 2003 in Fort Myers, Florida.

The firm Lalique was founded by René Jules Lalique, one of the most prominent glassmakers of the time, and one of the first to sculpt glass for great monumental works, such as the fountains of the Champs Elysees. The excellence of his creations and the taste he applied to his works earned him important commissions for the interior decoration of ships, trains such as the Orient Express, churches such as St. Nicasius in Reims and numerous religious and civil goldsmiths. Lalique was not content with designing their models, but also founded a factory to produce large quantities, patenting several innovative manufacturing processes of glass, and various technical effects such as "satin Lalique" or opalescent glass. Lalique pieces are preserved in prominent museums such as the Corning Museum of Glass and the Metropolitan in New York, the Louvre or the Orsay in Paris, among many others.

Lalique transitioned to producing lead glass (crystal) works during the 1950s while under the direction of René’s son Marc, operating as “M. Lalique” and later as “Cristal Lalique.” Marie-Claude Lalique took control of the company following Marc’s death in 1977. It was sold to Pochet in 1994, and became part of the Swiss partnership of Art & Fragrance and the holding company Financière Saint-Germain in 2008. Since 2010, Cristal Lalique has been wholly owned by Art & Fragrance, who rebranded them in 2016 as Lalique Group SA. The company is ultimately owned by Silvio Denz, an entrepreneur and Swiss national. Today, Lalique produces an array of luxury products in five main categories: jewelry, decorative items, interior design, perfumes, and art. The company’s sole remaining production facility is the Cristallerie Lalique in Wingen-sur-Moder. It was opened in 1921 as the Verrerie d’Alsace (Alsace Glassworks) and given its present name in 1962.

RENÉ LALIQUE (Aÿ, France, 1860- Paris, 1945). Vase "Luxembourg". Frosted glass. Slightly pitted at the base. Signed.

    Est: €1,000 - €1,200

RENÉ LALIQUE (Aÿ, France, 1860- Paris, 1945). Vase "Luxembourg". Frosted glass. Slightly pitted at the base. Signed. Measurements: 21.5 x 31 x 31 cm. Originally, the firm Lalique was founded by René Jules Lalique (1860 - 1945), one of the most prominent glassmakers of the time, and one of the first to sculpt glass for large monumental works, such as the fountains of the Champs Elysees. He enjoyed great recognition thanks to his original creations of jewelry, perfume bottles, glasses, plates, etc., within the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. He trained with the Parisian jeweler Louis Aucoq, and then continued his studies at Sudenham Art College in London. René Lalique died in 1945 and his son Marc took the helm. His inclination, technique and know-how led him to renovate and modernize the Wingen-sur-Moder factory, and Lalique quickly became one of the best glassmakers, not only in France but worldwide. The contrast between pure transparency and satin luster became Lalique's hallmark, at home and abroad. After Marc Lalique's death in 1977, he left the helm of Cristallerie Lalique to his daughter Marie-Claude. Slightly pitted at the base.

MARC LALIQUE (Paris, France, 1900 - 1977). Ice bucket "Ganymede", c.1948. Frosted glass. Presents picket on the base. Signed on the base. Measurements: 23 x 23,5 x 24,5 cm. Marc Lalique was born in 1900 in Paris, son of René Lalique and Alice Ledru and brother of Suzanne Lalique-Haviland. He was responsible for the shift from glass to crystal in the early 1950s. After studying at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Marc Lalique joined his father in the family business in 1922. He was a highly skilled technician and frequently visited the Wingen-sur-Moder factory to supervise new production techniques. Upon his father's death in 1945, Marc took the helm. His technical inclination and expertise led him to renovate and modernize the Wingen-sur-Moder factory, and Lalique quickly became one of the best glass manufacturers, not only in France but worldwide. The contrast between pure transparency and satin sheen became Lalique's hallmark, at home and abroad. Marc Lalique's most famous pieces include the Angel glass, inspired by the Smiling Angel of the Cathedral of Reims, a reference to the Lalique family's origins in the Champagne region, and the famous L'Air du Temps Nina Ricci perfume bottle. He died in 1977, leaving his daughter Marie-Claude in charge of the Cristallerie Lalique.
