(b Boston, MA, 1813; d Roxbury, MA, 1891) American Painter. Samuel Lancaster Gerry, inspired and influenced by the works of Thomas Cole, lacked formal teaching. However, in 1837, Gerry spent three years traveling through Western Europe and experimented with his style. Following his return from Europe in the 1840s, Gerry became a strong contributor to and supporter of the White Mountain School, an institution that promoted teachings in the Romantic pastoral style of the Hudson River School. In 1854 Gerry founded and became president of the Boston Art Club. Painting landscapes and portraits throughout his career, the artist remained in Massachusetts for the remainder of his life.
