Paul Landacre (1893-1963) Monterey Hills Circa 1930 The important modernist wood engraving produced late 1920s to early 1930s is inscribed 30/50 and titled in pencil lower left, signed by Paul Landacre lower right. From that edition of 50, only 33 prints were signed by the artist in pencil. Landacre's monogram is in the block lower left. This image appeared in California Hills and Other Wood Engravings by Paul Landacre, published in 1931 in Los Angeles by Bruce McCallister. That portfolio was honored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the ''Fifty Books of the Year'' for 1931. At a time when Emil Bisttram and Raymond Jonson were deconstructing the landscape of New Mexico, Paul Landacre was similarly transforming the terrain of California into rhythmic modernist forms like this fine and darkly inked impression found in very fine condition. The print is matted, unframed. Image measures 6 x 8, sheet is 8.75 x 11.25 inches. No frame.
