            Sep. 12, 2023

Peter Lanyon, Standing Female Nude, 1964

            Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Peter Lanyon, British 1918–1964 - Standing Female Nude, 1964; charcoal on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Lanyon 64', 68.5 x 52 cm (ARR) Provenance: Bonhams, London, 20th Century British Art, 25th March 2003, lot 107; with Gimpel Fils, London, no.8644 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); private collection Note: Lanyon would repeatedly return to the human form in his work, exploring the link between the shape of the body and the Cornish landscape since the 1950s. Some of these works like the present lot retained a clear and direct link with the visual world, another example of which is 'Nude Corsham, 1953' (Victoria Art Gallery, Bath). However, in other pieces such as the Tate's 'Corsham Model, 1953', the nude is almost entirely absorbed abstracted into a dense network of colour and line. Works such as the present are therefore an unique insight into the artist's working practice and understanding of the visual world. In his short career, Lanyon, alongside Barbara Hepworth, Roger Hilton and Ben Nicholson, became one of the most important artists internationally associated with St. Ives. His work was recently the subject of a solo exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery in 2016.
