Gioacchino La Pira (active between 1839 and 1875) - Naples from Carmine

    Est: €5,000 - €8,000

gouache on card 43 x 64 cm (the image only) titled and signed lower right: Napoli dal Carmine / LaPira For centuries Naples has been a key stop on the Grand Tour, the training journey cultural essential for European aristocrats. Extraordinary fusion of not only artistic but also naturalistic attractions, thanks to the proximity of Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei, the Neapolitan city and its surroundings in fact exerted an inexhaustible charm. The first to be attracted by it were the same artists to whom the wealthy travelers would later turn to to immortalize the beauty of the landscapes. From the idealized views typical of the seventeenth century we would thus pass, from the second half of the eighteenth century onwards, to the realistic ones. For travellers, they represented a memory, a testimony to be brought back to one's own homes and displayed with pride, as well as material for subsequent investigations. This is the case, for example, of the representations of the eruption of Vesuvius (lot 187): between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries, many scientific publications on volcanism were produced in Naples, thanks to a period of great eruptive activity of Vesuvius. At the same time there are countless artistic representations of the eruptions: various instances converge in them, from the mere documentation of the natural phenomenon from a more scientific point of view to the desire to eternalize the memory of having witnessed the moment. All made with that oscillation between the opposing instances of the picturesque and the sublime typical of the time. The cut and composition of these works appear flattened and repetitive, so as to focus on the specific phenomena of the individual eruptions and give them maximum prominence. Where the compositional variety fails, the difference ends up being the technique and the ability to master it. Here, therefore, the more traditional and widespread oil on canvas is replaced by gouache, which becomes the privileged medium for Neapolitan landscape painting. The reasons for this choice are multiple and functional both from an artistic and a commercial point of view. As regards the second aspect, the gouache technique, which mixes the colored pigments with rubbers instead of glues, causes the paint to dry faster and is therefore perfect for smaller-sized works, therefore easy to transport. These characteristics made it optimal for a "series" production that responded to a strong demand from travellers. From a purely artistic point of view, however, gouache presents itself as a middle ground between the transparency of watercolor and the fullness of tempera: despite having the brilliant colors of the first, in fact, it possesses a dense opacity that unites it to the second. This typical effect of gouache therefore made it ideal both for the plastic rendering of monuments and perspective planes and for the vaporousness of the clouds in the sky or the reflections of the slightly rippled sea. Nothing more appropriate to recreate the emotion of the impact with the atmosphere of Naples and its gulf, with its lights and colors and the unique mix of nature, art and humanity. One of the privileged views is that of the city seen from the sea (lot 180): the lowered shooting point, as if the artist were on a boat offshore, and the layout centered on the focal point of Castel Sant'Elmo allow you to embrace the whole city in one glance. The same point of view is used to represent the main islands of the Neapolitan gulf, Capri and Ischia, surrounded by sails and a point of connection between sky and sea (lots 177 and 179). The slightly asymmetrical compositions, on the other hand, guide the gaze towards the main monuments of the city and its main attractions without ever losing that typical contact with the sea (lots 176, 181 and 182). In these airy perspective sequences, such as that of the park of the Villa Reale (lot 178), the architectures stand out so much, such as the two small houses built by Carlo Vanvitelli for the main entrance to the park, as well as the lively city life that takes place there, with graceful figurines with the tip of a brush, without ever neglecting the surrounding natural landscape, with the hill of Posillipo. In contrast with the repetitiveness of the subjects of the views of this era, a very fine pictorial quality can be appreciated in the works offered here for auction. In fact, the brilliance of the colors and the minute detail of the perspective planes are accompanied by an executive ability of considerable artistic maturity. Large gouaches, like these, were distinguished from the more "mass" ones intended for a vast and less demanding public and were more easily sold directly by the artists themselves, without going through a merchant. The very presence of the signature of Gioacchino La Pira (lots 176, 183 and 187), one of the most acclaimed names of nineteenth-century Neapolitan landscape painting, seems a proud claim to the artist's ability compared to the anonymity of other no less valuable works. This collection thus allows us to take a journey through time and return to the vibrant Naples of the 19th century through specimens of uncommon refinement.

    La Pira, Gioacchino

    Est: -

La Pira, Gioacchino Active in Naples between 1839 and 1870. View of Naples from Posillipo. Gouache on wove paper. Signed lower right. H 28, W 48,5 cm (passepartout). Between 1839 and 1870, Gioacchino La Pira captured on numerous gouaches the sights of Naples and Campania, which were a must-see for the travellers of the Grand Tour. Both scenic highlights, such as the smoking Vesuvius or the wildly romantic island of Capri, and ancient sites, such as the excavations of Pompeii, were among his motifs. The present work shows the view from the hill Posillipo, which in the 19th century became one of the preferred viewpoints near Naples due to the construction of the depicted panoramic road. Provenance: estate Curt Edgar Schreiber, former managing director of the watch factory Mauthe, Schwenningen, and successors. Deutsche Version: La Pira, Gioacchino Tätig in Neapel zwischen 1839 und 1870. Blick vom Posillipo auf Neapel. Gouache auf Velin. U.r. sign. H. 28, B. 48,5 cm (Passepartoutausschnitt).
