Sotheby's*Willem Joseph Laquy (1738-1798) A FAMILY IN AN INTERIOR signed at the base of crib lower right Laquy oil on panel 16 7/8 by 21 1/8 in. 42.9 by 53.7 cm. In an 18th century frame stamped INFROIT. Laquy was born in Germany but worked in Amsterdam from a young age. He came under the patronage of the Dutch collector, Gerrit Braamcamp, and copied many of the paintings in his collection. One important work, Gerrit Dou's triptych, Night School; The Lying-In Room; Man Sharpening a Quill (purchased after Braamcamp's death by Catherine the Great and lost at sea on the way to Russia in 1771) is known only from the copy made by Laquy (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum).
