Laske, inscribed Der Petka auf Lapad SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1600 - 3000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1600 Oskar Laske (1874–1951) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, book illustrator, and architect of the 20th century, primarily during the interwar period, born in Czernowitz (Bukovina). He studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Otto Wagner, took only one landscape painting course with Anton Hlavacek, and remained a self-taught painter. Notable buildings include the Engel Pharmacy "Zum weißen Engel" (Bognergasse 9, Vienna) and the cabaret "Nachtlicht." From 1905, he was a member of the Jungbund (Young League), from 1907 of the Hagenbund (until 1922), from 1924 of the Vienna Secession (until 1939/45), and from 1928/39 of the Künstlerhaus (Artists' House). His travels throughout Europe (Greece, Turkey, Belgium, the Netherlands, Tunisia, Spain, North America) and as a war artist for the Austro-Hungarian Army (Galicia, Isonzo, Romania) significantly influenced his work. Early landscape paintings and vedute in the atmospheric Impressionist style, later genre scenes, biblical/historical scenes – imaginative, detailed, humorous, narrative, with expressive use of color in gouache, watercolor, lithography, and etching. Laske designed stage sets and costumes, illustrated books (design, architectural painting), and organized regular meetings with theater performances and readings. Influenced by Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Rudolf Bacher, the Wiener Werkstätte, the Wiener Werkbund, Ver Sacrum, and Cubism. Brother of the painter Elisabeth Kesselbauer-Laske.
