Chest of drawers designed by Wolfgang Laubersheimer for Gruppe Pentagon in 1984, made of patinated steel with wooden interior. The piece presents a prismatic body of refined lines and markedly industrial character, with four front drawers of different heights and small metal handles of sculptural appearance. The steel surface retains a dark and irregular patina, typical of the material, which adds visual depth and reinforces its austere and experimental aesthetic. The design responds to the radical language of Gruppe Pentagon, a German collective linked to the avant-garde design of the 1980s. In contrast to the traditional idea of domestic furniture, this chest of drawers transforms a functional object into a piece with a strong architectural presence, where the visual weight of the steel is balanced by a sober and precise structure. The contrast between the metal exterior and the wooden interior underlines the tension between industrial hardness and everyday use. Wolfgang Laubersheimer was a founding member of Gruppe Pentagon, a Cologne-based collective active during the 1980s. WOLFGANG LAUBERSHEIMER (Germany, 1955) for Gruppe Pentagon. Verspanntes Regal" bookcase, 1984. First edition of 9 shelves. Patinated steel with tensioning cable. Very good condition. Measurements: 250 x 31 x 42 cm. Bookcase designed by Wolfgang Laubersheimer for the German collective Gruppe Pentagon, one of the most representative proposals of Central European experimental design of the eighties. Made of patinated steel, the piece has a tall, narrow and slightly curved structure, with open shelves arranged vertically and a lateral tensioning cable that does not act as a decorative element, but as an essential part of its stability system. The design, known as "Verspanntes Regal", is based on a construction of great apparent simplicity, where the tension, weight and inclination of the structure generate a functional and sculptural balance. Its austere and radical industrial language reflects Laubersheimer's research into metal, the architecture of the object and the boundary between furniture and sculpture. The dark surface of the steel, with its natural patina, reinforces the material character of the piece and its status as a singular object.
