Die sitzende Figur ist aus grosszügig gerundeten, ineinandergreifenden Volumen aufgebaut, die den Körper auf seine elementaren Formen reduzieren und ihm zugleich eine aussergewöhnliche Monumentalität verleihen. Kennzeichnend für Laurens ist die harmonische Verbindung kubistischer Formauffassung mit einer ausgeprägten Sinnlichkeit. Trotz der weitgehenden Reduktion anatomischer Einzelheiten bleiben die weiblichen Formen - insbesondere die sanft modellierte Brust, die schmale Taille und die kraftvoll gebildeten Gliedmassen - klar erfahrbar. Der nahezu gesichtslose Kopf verzichtet auf individuelle Charakterisierung und verleiht der Figur eine zeitlose, universelle Präsenz. Die fein strukturierte Oberfläche der Terrakotta bewahrt die unmittelbare Modellierung des Künstlers und verstärkt den lebendigen Eindruck des Materials. With the "Petite femme assise", Henri Laurens created an impressive variation of his central theme of the female nude, which, in the early 1930s, counts among the most important groups of works in his sculptural oeuvre. The seated figure is constructed from generously rounded, interlocking volumes that reduce the body to its elementary forms while simultaneously imparting an extraordinary monumentality. Characteristic of Laurens is the harmonious combination of a Cubist conception of form with a pronounced sensuality. Despite the far-reaching reduction of anatomical details, the female forms—especially the gently modelled breast, the slender waist, and the powerfully formed limbs—remain clearly perceptible. The almost faceless head dispenses with individual characterization and gives the figure a timeless, universal presence. The finely textured surface of the terracotta preserves the artist’s immediate modelling and enhances the vivid impression of the material. Der kompakte, sitzende Frauenakt ist aus grosszügig gerundeten Volumen aufgebaut, deren ruhige Flächen und sanft geschwungene Konturen eine eindrucksvolle plastische Einheit bilden. Der erhobene rechte Arm sowie der weit ausschwingende linke Arm rahmen den Körper ein und verleihen der Komposition einen geschlossenen, beinahe architektonischen Rhythmus. Die Anatomie ist bewusst vereinfacht und auf elementare Formen reduziert. Kopf, Rumpf und Gliedmassen verschmelzen zu einer harmonischen Gesamtfigur, während die sparsame Ausarbeitung der Gesichtszüge die zeitlose, archetypische Wirkung der Darstellung verstärkt. Trotz der starken Abstraktion bleibt die weibliche Körperlichkeit mit ihren weich modellierten Brüsten und den ausgewogenen Proportionen stets präsent. Die warme, matte Oberfläche der Terrakotta unterstreicht die sinnliche Qualität des Materials und vermittelt die unmittelbare Handschrift des Bildhauers. This terracotta belongs to the characteristic female figures of Henri Laurens, in which the artist led the Cubist formal language of the 1920s and early 1930s to a balanced synthesis of monumentality and organic unity. The compact, seated female nude is constructed from generously rounded volumes, whose calm surfaces and gently curved contours create an impressive sculptural unity. The raised right arm and the widely sweeping left arm frame the body and lend the composition a closed, almost architectural rhythm. The anatomy is deliberately simplified and reduced to elementary forms. Head, torso, and limbs merge into a harmonious overall figure, while the sparing treatment of the facial features enhances the timeless, archetypal effect of the depiction. Despite the strong abstraction, the female corporeality with its softly modelled breasts and balanced proportions remains ever present. The warm, matte surface of the terracotta underscores the sensual quality of the material and conveys the immediate hand of the sculptor. Diese Arbeit gehört zu einer Serie von Flachreliefs aus "Terre cuite", mit der sich Henri Laurens zwischen 1919 und 1945 regelmässig auseinandersetzte. Das vorliegende Relief von 1920 ist das dritte dieser Werkgruppe, die 1919 begann. Laurens erforscht in diesen Arbeiten eine Synthese aus kubistischer Formsprache und handwerklicher Tonbearbeitung. Gitarre und Klarinette sind typische Motive der kubistischen Moderne und verweisen auf seine Auseinandersetzung mit Picasso und Braque. Laurens modelliert die Oberfläche subtil, wobei die Konturen der Instrumente durch Vertiefungen und Erhöhungen angedeutet werden. Die Komposition ist dicht organisiert und die geometrischen Elemente sind ineinander verschachtelt. Das Relief arbeitet mit Licht und Schatten, wobei die plastische Tiefe gering bleibt und die Flachheit des Mediums betont wird. From the edition of seven numbered copies. This work belongs to a series of low reliefs in "Terre cuite", with which Henri Laurens regularly engaged between 1919 and 1945. The present relief from 1920 is the third in this group, which began in 1919. In these works, Laurens explores a synthesis of Cubist formal language and artisanal clay modeling. Guitar and clarinet are typical motifs of Cubist modernism and allude to his engagement with Picasso and Braque. Laurens models the surface subtly, with the contours of the instruments suggested by depressions and elevations. The composition is densely organized and the geometric elements are interlocked. The relief plays with light and shadow, with the sculptural depth remaining shallow and the flatness of the medium emphasized. Auf polierte Eichenholzplatte montiert und auf Bronzesockel gestellt. Abstrahierte Darstellung eines kauernden Frauenaktes mit erhobenem Arm, umgeben von einem Band, darin ein Pentagramm. Die Erstausführung erfolgte 1933 im Auftrag der Karl-Marx-Schule der Stadt Villejuif, wodurch das Gebäude als Sehenswürdigkeit für das Werk des Architekten André Lurcat und des Künstlers Jean Lurcat wurde. Laurens begann als Steinmetz, zunächst im Stil von Rodin, und schloss sich 1911 der Künstlergruppe des Montparnasse an. Befreundet mit Georges Braques, wandte er sich dem Synthetischen Kubismus zu, stellte 1913 erstmals aus und stand in Kontakt mit Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso und Amadeo Modigliani. Unter dem Einfluss afrikanischer Plastik und des Surrealismus entwickelte sich seine Formsprache weiter. Seine „Synthetik von Musik und Architektur“ führte zu markanten Werken. Seine Skulptur „Schlafende Frau“ wurde aus dem Museum Saarbrücken entfernt und als „Entartete Kunst“ zerstört. Ein weiteres Exemplar (1932) befindet sich in der Sammlung des Centre Pompidou (Donation 1967, Inv.Nr. AM 1571 S). Provenienz: Galerie Louise Leiris (Etikett verso auf der Platte). A.R.
