Peterson Laurent (Haitian, 1888-1958) Landscape, circa 1950-1955, oil on masonite board. Framed. Size: 8'' x 12'', 20 x 30 cm (board); 14.5'' x 18.5'', 37 x 47 cm (frame). Provenance: Gary Nader, Private Connecticut Collection. Peterson Laurent is a self-taught artist from Haiti. He was a blacksmith and produced art as early as the late 1940s. Laurent was not prolific, making his art hard to find. His work depicts scenes of every day life, parades, cathedrals, bandstands, landscapes, including still life paintings of fish and renditions of battleships. His work was exhibited in 1997 -- Island on Fire: Passionate Visions of Haiti From the Collection of Jonathan Demme, Equitable Life Building, New York, NY (1997). Peterson Laurent (Haitian/St. Marc, 1888-1958) Still Life, circa 1950's, oil on board, 19'' x 27''/ 48 x 69 cm. Framed: 24'' x 32''/ 61 x 81 cm. Inscribed: "Clovis-Exentus St. Marc". Laurent's Clovis reference is a satire of the original King of the Franks, as well as a commentary on his own ancestry. Blacksmith transformed to artist, Laurent is celebrated for his sculpted lines in diverse subject matter including still lifes of plants and fish, Vodou scenes and presentations of rural life from everyday work to joyous events. A member of the Centre d'Art, Laurent was regularly lauded by its leaders especially Dewitt Peters who often discussed his masterly paintings.

Born in Saint-Marc, Laurent worked as a blacksmith. He typically painted scenes of rural life and United States battleships. Laurent died at the age of 70 in Saint-Marc.
