Jacob Lawrence Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1917 - d. 2000

Jacob Armstead Lawrence is among the best-known twentieth century American painters of African descent. He was married to another artist, Gwendolyn Knight. He termed the style of his painting as “dynamic cubism” as influenced by the colors and shapes he observed in Harlem. His works are flat, bold, and abstracted but depict real, recognizable subject matter that contains messages or reflects memories. Lawrence was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but moved with his mother when he was thirteen, with his sister and brother to New York City. His mother enrolled him in arts and crafts classes in a settlement house in Harlem. Here he drew patterns with crayons and was recognized by an art teacher as one who had great potential. After dropping out of school at age sixteen, he worked in a laundry and printing plant. Yet he also attended classes at the Harlem Art Workshop taught by African American artist Charles Alston. This led to further art educational opportunities and a scholarship to the American Artists School and then to a paid position with the Works Progress Administration. In 1941 he married painter Gwendolyn Knight who he had met as a student in the Harlem Community Art Center. During WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served on the first racially integrated crew on the USCGC Sea Cloud during which time he continued to paint. In 1970 he settled in Seattle to become an art professor at the University of Washington. He taught at many different schools during his long career. His paintings focused on the history and struggles of peoples of African origins in America across the nation. His famous Migration series depict the movement of hundreds of thousands of African Americans from the rural South to the North after World War I. This series brought him attention and fame. He was given his first major solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and thus became the most celebrated American painter of African origins in this nation. He continued to produce art until shortly before his death at age 82. His last work was a mosaic mural New York in Transit, installed in 2001 in the Times Square Subway station, N.Y. During his lifetime Lawrence was honored with many medals, retrospective exhibitions, and elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1998 he was awarded the Washington State’s highest honor the Washington Medal of Merit. In 1990 he was presented the U.S. National Medal of the Arts.

The caption for this image reads "A snake said "Hiss!"/An owl said "Whoo!"/Harriet said, "We are coming through!/A runaway slave/with a price on her head,/I'll be free", said Harriet,/"Or I'll be dead!" Lawrence first made a series of paintings on the subject of the Underground Railroad with the series The Life of Harriet Tubman in 1940. Nesbett L69-1.

JACOB LAWRENCE (1917 - 2000) The Legend of John Brown. Portfolio with complete text, printed folders, the printed poem by Robert Hayden, and 22 color screenprints on Domestic Etching paper, 1977. Each 508x657 mm; 20x25⅞ inches (sheets), full margins, loose as issued. One of 60 signed and numbered copies (with 1 artist proof and 20 hors commerce copies). Signed by the artist and author and numbered 48/60 in pencil on the justification page. Each signed, dated and numbered #1-22 and 48/60 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Ives-Sillman, New Haven, with the blind stamp lower right. Published by the Founders Society of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI, with the blind stamp lower right. With the original linen-covered slip case and cardboard box. Based on Lawrence's 1941 series of 22 gouache and tempera paintings, The Life of John Brown, this set of prints was commissioned by the Detroit Institute of Arts. Jacob Lawrence used his first of three successive Julius Rosenwald Fund fellowships to complete the series of paintings - the same year he married Gwendolyn Knight. The 23-year old artist had already received extraordinary attention for his earlier historical painting series Frederick Douglass, The Life of Toussaint L'Ouverture, Harriet Tubman and The Migration Series. These original works from The Life of John Brown were too fragile for traveling exhibitions by the time of the Whitney retrospective in 1974. Due to extensive paint loss, the Institute had to decline the request for their loan to this exhibition. Ives-Sillmann re-created the series with the artist in order to bring the works to a broader public. The portfolio is a tour-de-force of screenprinting: each print was made through hand-cut film stencils and displays the precision that had previously attracted artists such as Josef Albers and Ad Reinhardt to Ives-Sillman. This set is also Jacob Lawrence's masterwork in printmaking. Lawrence transformed his series of paintings into color screenprints of the most stunning colors. The portfolio has not been available at auction since 2008; this is the fourth set to come to auction. Bearden/Henderson, p. 300; Nesbett L77-5.

Jacob Lawrence 1917-2000 Forest Creatures (Harriet Tubman, An Escape) 1969 etching and drypoint on wove paper, from a plate hand drawn by the artist edition of 28 9-3/4 x 13-5/8 inches (image) signed, dated and numbered 21/28 Provenance: Swann Galleries , 2/6/2007, lot 125 (sold for $12,000 hammer) Literature: Nesbett, 23; L69-1 This is a very rare, early image by Lawrence. Published as a fund raiser for Artists Equity, New York. Published previously as Harriet Tubman (An Escape), a title given to the work by the artist in 1993. An example of this print is in the collection of Bennington College, Vermont. Lawrence first dealt with the theme of Harriet Tubman in a series of 31 paintings executed in 1939-40. In 1967 he used the theme again, executing 21 paintings (17 of which were used) for a children's book, Harriet and the Promised Land, which was published by Windmill Books/Simon & Schuster in 1968. This print is similar to the tenth image in the book and was probably executed after completion of the paintings. The image depicts Harriet Tubman leading fugitive slaves to the safety of the North Star. Lawrence's caption for the image in the book reads, "A snake said, 'Hiss'/ An owl said, 'Whoo!'/ Harriet said, 'We are coming through'/ A runaway slave/ With a price on her head/ 'I'll be free', said Harriet, / 'Or I'll be dead!'" The image is reversed from that in the painting and the animals, insects, and forest are all depicted differently than in the painting. (Nesbett, 23)

(Nesbett, 50) "I was baptized in the Abyssinian Baptist Church (in Harlem) in about 1932. There I attended church, I attended Sunday School, and I remember the ministers giving very passionate sermons pertaining to the Creation. This was over 50 years ago, and you know, these things stay with you even though you don't realize what an impact these experiences are making on you at the time. As I was doing the series I think that this was in the back of my mind, hearing this minister talk about these things." --JL
