Orientalist school of the 19th century. After HIPPOLYTE LAZERGES (France, 1817-1887). "The Water Carrier (or Old Biskri)". Oil on canvas. Restoration visible on the back. Slight polychrome losses. With unidentified pencil indications.

With unidentified pencil indications. Measurements: 91,5 x 62,5 cm; 104 x 74 cm (frame). The present canvas is almost identical to one of the masterpieces in the Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers, "Le porteur d'eau" by Hippolyte Lazerges. In it, the master orientalist depicts a man leaning against a fountain in the Casbah of Algiers. With a copper pot at his feet, the man smokes a cigarette while waiting for a woman to finish filling an earthenware jug. It is said that the sitter, called Old Biskri, died before the painter finished this portrait, and that Lazerges kept his copper pot until his own death. The painting is of great pictorial mastery and differs slightly from the much larger Algiers painting. The present canvas may have been painted by a pupil in Lazerges' studio, where he also worked with his son Paul, also a painter. Hippolyte Lazerges trained in Paris under the guidance of the sculptor David d'Angers and the painter François Bouchot. At the age of 13 he moved to Algeria, where he spent most of his life. There he painted oriental women engaged in everyday activities, such as preparing fleece or working on their primitive looms. He also wrote melodies and songs.

Technik: Öl auf Leinwand, doubliert, gerahmt, Signatur: unten rechts signiert und datiert 'Hip.te Lazerges 1872', Maße: 61 x 40 cm (Bild), 84 x 63 cm (Rahmen), Zustand: gut, gefirnist, Retuschen im Hintergrund der Darstellung, Kommentar: Anmutig und würdig steht Thetis, die Mutter Achills, in einer Felsgrotte und hält sich eine Nautilusmuschel an das Ohr. Ihre kontrapostische Haltung stellt Torso und Spielbein hinter Gazéstoff verführerisch zur Schau. In der Wahl der Textilien hat sich der Künstler, der ab 1830 Algerien bereiste, wohl von den orientalischen Schönheiten beeinflussen lassen. Doch mit dem Verweis auf die Trikolore in der Farbwahl zeigt sich Lazerges dennoch als Patriot. + Technique: oil on canvas, mounted, framed, Signature: signed and dated lower right 'Hip.te Lazerges 1872', Dimensions: 61 x 40 cm (picture), 84 x 63 cm (frame), Condition: good, firnist, retouching in the background of the image, Comment: Graceful and dignified, Thetis, the mother of Achilles, stands in a rock grotto holding a nautilus shell to her ear. Her contrapposto posture seductively displays her torso and left leg behind gauze fabric. In his choice of textiles, the artist, who travelled to Algeria in 1830, was probably influenced by Oriental beauties. But with the reference to the tricolour in the choice of colours, Lazerges nevertheless shows himself to be a patriot.
