Very rare spectacular engraving by the French print-maker Noël Le Mire (or Noël Lemire) dep. various mythological figures (i.a. Apollo, the Nine Muses, Pegasus & Momus) as painted on the ceiling of “Le Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux” by the French artist Jean Baptiste Claude Robin (1734-1818). The French architect Victor Louis (1731-1800), who built this famous theatre between 1773-1780, published in 1782 in Paris for his own costs a sumptuous illustrated plate-volume “Salle de spectacle de Bordeaux” for which our engraving was separately issued (but are rarely found together). ¶ A few minor defects (fold in the middle, small dam. spot in outer blank margin (expertly restored), occ. sl. creased/ torn in outer (blank) margins), but nevertheless in good condition (not examined out of frame).

Engraving by Noel le Mire (Fr., 1724-1801), after Louis Jean-Baptiste le Paon (Fr., 1738-1785). Washingtons head and confident pose are based on Charles Wilson Peales paintings of George Washington after the Battle of Princeton, which Peale began painting in 1779. Le Paon added a slave tending a horse. In the engraving, the slave is a woman standing behind the horse (not a man in front), and Washington is surrounded by documents: Daily correspondence, Declaration of Independence, Treaty of Alliance, a proclamation, Conciliatory Bills, etc., on a table and on the ground, and in Washingtons hand. In margin at lower left: Peint par L. le Paon Peintre de Bataille de S. A. S. Msr le Prince de Conde. In margin at lower right: Grave par N. le Mire des Academies Imperiales et Royales et de celle des Sciences et Arts de Rouen. [C. 1780s. Lafayette was involved in the Battle of Yorktown in Oct. 1781.] Image 16 ½ x 12 5/8 in. Sheet 18 ½ x 13 ¼ in. Sight condition very good, traces of foxing, pencil number in margin at lower left. Verso has tape to its left edge and upper right corner, couple hinging bits to versos upper edge.
