Measurements: 34 x 25 cm (x2). “Ondas” is one of the most significant lines of research developed by Julio Le Parc concerning visual perception, color, and the illusion of movement. Created primarily between the late 1960s and the 1970s, this body of work is closely related to the artist’s other explorations, such as the Surface Couleur and Modulaciones series.Far from representing waves or natural elements, Le Parc’s “waves” arise from the meticulous organization of repeated forms and chromatic variations that generate dynamic optical effects. The work comes to life through its interaction with the viewer, whose gaze and movement trigger visual vibrations, shifts in depth, and sensations of continuous motion. In keeping with the principles of kinetic art, Le Parc dispenses with expressive gesture and constructs his compositions based on rigorous systems and carefully calculated structures. In this way, he makes perception the true protagonist of the aesthetic experience, inviting the viewer to actively participate in the visual transformation of the work. A multidisciplinary artist within the field of kinetic art, Julio Le Parc trained at the Prilidiano Peuyrredón School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, and in 1957 he began working within the abstract tradition. The following year, he moved to Paris on a French government scholarship, where he founded the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel and joined the Nouvelle Tendance group. In 1966, he held his first solo exhibition at the Sage Gallery in Howard (New York), and that same year he won first prize at the Venice Biennale. In 1967, he participated in a major group exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and in 1972, the first retrospective of his work was held in Düsseldorf. His work is currently represented in the Tate Gallery in London, the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Proa Foundation in Buenos Aires, the Luis Ángel Arango Library in Colombia, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., among other public and private collections.

Julio Le Parc’s “Ondas” series is part of his research on visual perception, color, and apparent movement, particularly from the late 1960s through the 1970s. It is closely related to his Surface Couleur (Color Surface) series and his Modulaciones works. These works do not depict waves or nature literally. The “waves” are visual phenomena created through the repetition and systematic variation of shapes and colors. The viewer becomes a fundamental part of the experience: as they move in front of the work, the chromatic vibrations and changes in rhythm generate a sensation of movement, depth, and constant transformation. Julio Le Parc is an Argentine sculptor and painter who focuses on both modern Op-art and kinetic art. Le Parc attended the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is a founding member of the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV) and award-winning artworks. He is also an important figure in Argentine modern art. Le Parc's work was for its time still avant-garde, innovative, audacious; in it are used as elements of plastic art mainly those that surprise or suggest the gaze -and, through it, the whole subject-. On the other hand, Le Parc seeks to involve the spectator absolutely within the work; for this he resorts to artificial illuminations, specular effects, reflections and movements; for example with mechanical bands that move by hidden mechanical devices, the flow of phosphorescent liquids, the movement of nylon threads, his sculptures in certain cases are genuine installations that envelop the spectators. It is in the sixties that Le Parc is considered both within the group called Op-art and kinetic art, and even conceptual art, although he tries to transcend such movements and makes, mainly, an experimental art.

JULIO LE PARC (Mendoza, Argentina, 1928). Cercles par déplacement", 2015. Acrylic with printed material, mirror and offset lithography. H.C. copy. Signed and justified. Edition of 100. Measurements: 9 x 8,6 x 6,5 cm. Multidisciplinary artist framed within the kinetic art, Julio Le Parc was formed in the School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Peuyrredón of Buenos Aires, and in 1957 he begins to work within the abstract language. The following year he moved to Paris thanks to a scholarship from the French Government, and there he founded the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel, as well as joining the group Nueva Tendencia. In 1966 he holds his first solo exhibition at the Sage Gallery in Howard (New York), and that same year he wins first prize at the Venice Biennale. In 1967 he took part in an important group exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and in 1972 the first retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Düsseldorf. His work is currently represented in the Tate Gallery in London, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Fundación Proa in Buenos Aires, the Luis Ángel Arango Library in Colombia and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., among other public and private collections.
