    Alfred Le Petit (French, 1841–1909) Fleurs, Fruits & Légumes du Jour Paris, 1871 A group of unbound hand-colored lithograph plates from Alfred Le Petit’s celebrated satirical series Fleurs, Fruits & Légumes du Jour, published by Au Bureau de L’Éclipse, 16 rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Coulboeuf. The plate set comprises caricature portraits of 19th C. political and military figures rendered as anthropomorphized flowers, fruits, and vegetables, each accompanied by satirical verse. Identified subjects include Le Général Trochu, Léon Gambetta, Le Général Chanzy, Delescluze, Pierre-Frédéric Dorian, Edmond About, Le Général Faidherbe, and Jules Simon. Issued in the immediate aftermath of the Siege of Paris and during the period of the Paris Commune, the series reflects the sharp political commentary and visual inventiveness of the radical illustrated press. Artist Bio Alfred Le Petit was a French caricaturist and political satirist associated with journals such as L’Éclipse and Le Grelot. Active during the late Second Empire and early Third Republic. He is best known for his biting hand-colored lithographs addressing politics, military affairs, and public figures, and is regarded as a leading figure in 19th-century French political caricature.   Have a similar item to sell? See the Dutch description: all pochoir-coloured, all French political caricatures concerning the Franco-Prussian war, published by Duclaux, Madre, a.o., 1870-1871, various folio sizes. Occas. small tears and folds in corners, but in good condition. Comprises i.a. "Le poupon a la mère Guillaume", "La confession de Badinguet", "Le plus lourd l'emporte", "Le Pif impérial" mainly supplements of La Charge; (9-13) "G. Pelardy & Grandperret." Series of 5 lithographs concerning the Franco-Prussian war, lithographed by Alexandre Eugène Lefebvre (b. 1826), 1870-1871, all w. sheet size 28 x 22 cm. (portrait and landscape). Sl. foxed. Interesting (complete?) series, possibly figuring Pealardy & Grandperret themselves (a large and a small man), with titles such as "Partie en guerre contre les ennemis...!", "Un laisser pour compte...!" and "Le coup de balai du 4 septembre 1870!". And 9 similar caricatures with the same subject and from the same years, including a series "Les Prussiens a Paris" (no. 3, 4 and 6) by L. Deniau.
