Hoi Lebadang (1921-2015), also known as Lê Bá Äáº£ng, was a celebrated Vietnamese-French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and mixed-media artist whose work bridged Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Born in Quáº£ng Trá», Vietnam, he moved to France in 1939 and later studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, where he developed the foundations of a career that would gain international recognition. His art is distinguished by richly textured surfaces, innovative combinations of materials, and recurring themes of horses, landscapes, villages, spirituality, and the human connection to nature. Drawing on both Vietnamese cultural heritage and European modernism, Lebadang created works that move between abstraction and representation, often evoking dreamlike, poetic worlds. His paintings, prints, and sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are held in major public and private collections, including the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Rockefeller Collection.

Graduating in 1948, he moved to Paris, established a studio, and married fellow artist Myshu, with whom he had a son. By the 1950s he gained recognition across France, experimenting with lithography and other mediums to depict French life and memories of Indochina and World War II, while the Vietnam War deeply influenced his later works featuring abstracted landscapes, horses, flowers, and boats, including controversial sculptures from downed B52 debris. Granted French nationality in 1981, he produced major works such as La comédie humaine and Espaces, bridging Eastern and Western art, and was honored as a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1994. He later founded the Fondation d’Art Lebadang in Huê, housing over 400 works spanning seven decades, and passed away on March 7th, 2015, in Paris, leaving a celebrated legacy in modern art.

Hoi Lebadang (1921-2015) was a Vietnamese-born artist who moved to France as a teenager. During World War II, he joined the French Resistance in the fight against Nazi occupation but was later arrested and imprisoned in a labor camp. Following his release, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he developed a distinctive artistic language that blended Eastern aesthetics with European modernism. Lebadang quickly gained recognition in the Paris art scene, and in 1966 he held his first exhibition in the United States at the Cincinnati Art Museum. He is best known for his richly textured mixed-media works, often incorporating molded pasteboard, limestone, and pigments on burlap or canvas. While much of his oeuvre is abstract, his figurative compositions frequently feature horses and natural landscapes, reflecting both his Vietnamese heritage and his deep connection to the natural world. 29.1/2 in. x 25.1/2 in. overall including the frame. Biography from the Archives of askART: Lebadang (Hoi) was born in Quang Tri, Vietnam in 1922. He moved to France in 1939 to pursue an art career at Ecole de Beaus Arts de Toulouse. While studying there he was awarded prizes for painting, drawing, and sculpture and won his first commission. By 1950 the Paris art community had recognized Lebadang's work, appreciating the blend of European and Far Eastern culture and philosophies reflected in it. The director of the Far Eastern Department at UNESCO commissioned him to illustrate a book of poetry, published by Editions Euros. Lebadang was first represented in the United States, in 1966, with an exhibition of his paintings at the Cincinnati Art Museum. In describing his art today critics remark that it incorporates everyday subjects into dream-like expressions of thought. Lebadang, an accomplished printmaker, favors the techniques of etching, lithograph, and serigraph. He also has done lithographs using the name Hoi. Lebadang's work is exhibited in Dusseldorf, Paris, Nantes, Cologne, Cannes and Aix en Provence galleries. His work is owned in permanent private and public collections including: Rockefeller Collection, New York; Loo Collection in Tokyo; Verkerke Collection, Holland; Phoenix Art Museum, USA; Cincinnati Museum, USA; Columbia Art Institute, USA; Lund University Museum, Sweden; Foundation Museum, Kenya; and the Museum of Arts and Letters, France. Frame: 19w x 33H Print: 12w x 21H In good condition with wear commensurate with age.Le Ba Dang, who went by 'Lebadang' as well as by the alias, 'Hoi', was born on June 27, 1921 in Bich-La-Dong, Hue province, Vietnam. While still a teenager, he secretly altered personal documents to join the Main d'oeuvreIndigine (M.O.I), or "Indigenous Manpower" branch of the French Ministry of Labor in 1939. Unbeknownst to Lebadang, it was an exploitive operation that would place him in a prison at Baumettes for Indochinesecitizens forcibly recruited from their homelands to build munitions for the Second World War, after French citizens were drafted into the army. From June 1940 until August 1941, Lebadang escaped from a prison factory, was caught, re-imprisoned in the Hautes-Pyrenees, and once more escaped to Toulouse, a free zone.
