Man Fong Lee Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1913 - d. 1988

Lee Man Fong (born November 14, 1913 – April 3, 1988) was a painter born in Guangzhou, China. His father, a merchant with ten children, brought him to Singapore. When his father died in 1930, Man Fong had to work hard to earn a living for his mother and siblings using his skill in painting ads and artwork. However, that was not enough for him. In 1932, he moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. The tension between nationalist groups such as Persagi (Persatuan Ahli-ahli Gambar Indonesia, or Association of Indonesian Draughtsmans) and Indische-Holland kunstkring community stimulated him. In 1942, Man Fong was jailed because of his opposition to Japanese colonialism in Indonesia. After six months in jail, Takahashi Masao helped him gain freedom. This Japanese officer was interested in his artistic potential.

In 1946, President Sukarno heard about him when he had his solo exhibition in Jakarta. Sukarno then knew that Man Fong was given a Malino scholarship from Van Mook, the Netherlands lieutenant-governor general. In Europe, many of his exhibitions were successful. He briefly returned to Indonesia, and went back to hold exhibitions from Den Haag to Paris. In 1952 he returned to Jakarta. The visit from Sukarno and Basuki Abdullah, the official palace painter at that time, encouraged him to establish Yin Hua in 1955. Yin Hua was an organization of Chinese painters that had its office on Lokasari Street, Jakarta. Many art exhibitions were organised by Yin Hua. In 1956, Yin Hua was invited to hold exhibitions in China.

The relationship between Sukarno and Man Fong improved. His beautiful and perfect works matched with Sukarno's taste. For him, Man Fong's art was an escape from revolutionary spirit. Sukarno didn't have any particular theme preference in art. Only ten percent of all his collections had a nationalist theme. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever," was his remark about his taste on art. Therefore, when Basuki Abdullah suggested to him to appoint Man Fong as the next presidential painter, Sukarno agreed to it without hesitance.

    Lee Man Fong (b. 1913 - 1988) Untitled

    Est: RM70,000 - RM140,000

Lee Man Fong is known primarily for his bevy of beautiful nubile maiden figure-types of Bali during the 1940s-1950s, reminescent of Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur's and inspired by artist-ethnologist Miguel Covarrubias's book, Island Of Bali (1937). He first stepped foot in Bali in 1941, the year he became a fulltime artist, and was intrigued by the rustic charm and culture of this matriarchal society where the women, often half-naked with only the sarung, were also adept at spinning and dance besides cooking. Here, a solitary woman is sitting on a rock, with a gnarled tree stump in the background. Man Fong's distinctive style of Chinese ink elegance of the xie-yi style and Western oil traditions with a dreamlike ambient set new standards at the time. Lee Man Fong was greatly supported by President Sukarno, and he was tasked to produce the five-volume art collection of Sukarno. He was born in China (Guangzhou), moved to Singapore (age three, returned to Singapore in 1967 where he stayed for 20 years because of the genocide purge by President Suharto). In Indonesia, he was briefly jailed by the Japanese. He also stayed in the Netherlands for six years. Apart from his seminal Bali life, he also painted doves, horses, goldfishes, ducks and cockerels. Since his death, he had commanded high prices for his vintage works like Bali Life (US$4.6 million, Christie's Hong Kong, 2013), and Magnificent Horses (US$1.05 million, Sotheby's HK, 2009).

  • Lee Man Fong (1913-1988) ‘Fortune and Longevity’
    Nov. 19, 2024

Lee Man Fong (1913-1988) ‘Fortune and Longevity’

    Est: €100,000 - €150,000

Lee Man Fong (1913-1988) ‘Fortune and Longevity’, signed, titled and dated The Hague 1951 upper left in Chinese, oil on board. H. 40 cm. W. 96 cm. Provenance: Dutch private collection. For a larger painting with a nearly identical representation, see: Ho Kung-Shang, 'The Oil Paintings of Lee Man Fong: The Pioneer Artist of Indonesia and Singapore', Art Book Co., Ltd, Taiwan, 1984, ill. p. 25 and Sotheby's Hong Kong, 6 October 2012, lot 338. This painting with its balanced composition, abundance of people and details, is without a doubt one of the best works in Man Fong’s oeuvre. He made it in 1951 in the Netherlands, at the heydays of his carreer. The title is derived from the Chinese text at the top left of the painting where wishes of prosperity and longevtiy are written. This message is conveyed by the many Chinese symbols: on the left side of the panel, pumpkins symbolize gold and abundance, lettuce in Chinese is the homophone of money, aubergine is deemed to be a plant to cure all sickness, kumquats symbolize prosperity, winter melons family unity, while water buffaloes augur idyllic life, harvest and fertility. Longevity is represented by the pine tree and the abundance of villagers spanning three-generations. PLEASE NOTE: we don't accept online live bids during the auction for this lot.

  • LEE MAN FONG (1913-1988): ‘FARMER GIRL’
    Oct. 18, 2024

LEE MAN FONG (1913-1988): ‘FARMER GIRL’

    Est: €1,000 - €2,000

LEE MAN FONG (1913-1988): ‘FARMER GIRL’ Oil on canvas. Finely rendered with bold, textured strokes of predominantly blue, green, and white, this painting depicts a young woman carrying a basket from the field. She wears a wide woven straw hat and hoop earrings, evoking a sense of rustic elegance. The artist skillfully uses a palette knife to create rich textures in the woman's clothing, capturing the ruggedness of her attire. This contrasts beautifully with the smooth, delicate brushwork that brings her luminous face to life, showcasing the artist's mastery in balancing texture with softness to convey both the physical and emotional depth of the subject. Inscriptions: Lower right, signed ‘L. Fong’. Provenance: From an old private collection in Montana, United States, acquired between the 1950s and 1970s during the couple’s travels across Asia, and thence by descent. Condition: Excellent condition. Dimensions: Image size 36.4 x 74.6 cm, Size incl. frame 99 x 58.8 cm. Mounted on a wood frame with a blue fabric backing. (2) Famed Indonesian-Chinese painter Lee Man Fong (1913-1988) was one of the most important twentieth century artists of Southeast Asia. Having studied first with a Lingnan painter and then with a teacher of western oil painting in Singapore, Lee was further able to explore western painting when he studied in Holland in the late 1940s to early 1950s. His unique blending of eastern and western painting techniques and sensitivities earned him many admirers both during his lifetime and after. In 1961, Lee became an art consultant to the Indonesian presidential palace and chief curator of its collection, positions facilitated by his experience and friendship with President Sukarno. Today, his works are in the collections of the Oei Hong Djien Museum in Magelang, Indonesia, and the National Gallery of Singapore, among others. The current lot depicts a young woman from a Chinese peasant family. The wide woven straw hat is typical of the type worn by farmers and fishermen in southern China to protect them from harsh sunlight. The artist's keen observation of his subject, as well as the realities of her everyday life, clearly shows in this sensitive portrait.
