Jules Joseph LEFEBVRE (1836-1911/12) and his studio The Slave with a Fruit Platter Original oil on canvas 93 x 71 cm Unsigned Our painting is a studio reworking of "L'esclave au plateau de fruits", exhibited at the Ghent Salon in 1874 and acquired by the city's museum, this work illustrates the craze for orientalism at the end of the XIXᵉ century, when academic techniques were put at the service of a dreamed-of Orient. Here, embroidered Ottoman fabrics sit alongside Maghrebi jewelry, supporting a restrained sensuality. The tray of oranges and pomegranates she is carrying reinforces the exoticism of the scene, where the precision of the rendering rivals a delicately dreamlike atmosphere.

Orientalischer Akt mit rotem Schleier und Tamburin. Öl auf Holz, an vier Seiten abgefast. 27,3 x 13,1 cm. Oben links signiert "Jules LeFebvre". Lefebvre studierte ab 1852 in Paris Malerei bei Léon Cogniet, schließlich wechselte er an die renommierte École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris. 1855 stellte er seine Werke erstmals auf dem Pariser Salon aus. Ab 1864 mit zunehmenden Erfolg - bis 1898 wurden dort insgesamt 72 Werke gezeigt. 1870 wurde er zum Offizier der Ehrenlegion ernannt, im selben Jahr nahm er eine Anstellung als Lehrer an der Académie Julian auf. Unter seinen zahlreichen Schülern seien stellvertretend Fernand Khnopff und Lesser Ury genannt. Lefebvre konzentrierte sich ab jener Zeit vor allem auf Porträts und Akte. Die lebensgroße (187 x 124 cm) Hauptfassung unseres Gemäldes befindet sich seit 2005 in der National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (Inv.-Nr. 2005.237). Das Bild wurde zuerst auf dem Pariser Salon 1872 mit dem Titel "La Cigale" (Die Zikade) als allegorische Illustration einer berühmten Fabel von Jean de La Fontaine mit dem Titel „Die Ameise und die Zikade [auf Deutsch: die Heuschrecke]“ präsentiert. In La Fontaines Geschichte verbringt die Zikade den Sommer mit Singen und Spielen und macht sich dabei über die fleißige Ameise lustig, die Vorräte anlegt und ihr Haus für den Winter vorbereitet. Mit den ersten Winterwinden wird die Zikade unvorbereitet und frierend obdachlos. Eine weitere, wesentlich kleinere Version des wohl sehr erfolgreichen Motives (44,5 x 22 cm) wurde 1997 auf dem Londoner Auktionsmarkt unter dem Titel "Une beauté orientale" erfolgreich versteigert. Beide Versionen unterscheiden sich von unserem Gemälde nicht nur durch die Andersfarbigkeit des Schleiers, sondern vor allem durch das Fehlen des hier an die Wand gelehnten Tamburins. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Artistes vivants en janvier 1881, Paris, 1882-1884, p. 348 Probablement Gustave Haller, Nos grands peintres, Paris, 1899, p. 117 (fig. 1) Envoi de Rome, notre tableau constitue un émouvant témoignage du séjour italien du jeune peintre Jules Lefebvre. En 1861, il remporte le Prix de Rome avec la Mort de Priam (Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, n° PRP 111) et prend donc la direction de la Villa Médicis. Jules Claretie indique dans Peintres et sculpteurs contemporains : « De Rome, en 1863, Jules Lefebvre envoyait sa Charité romaine et une baigneuse. C’étaient déjà ces nus exquis d’aujourd’hui » 1. Cette baigneuse s’inscrit dans les travaux académiques imposés par la formation romaine de l’Académie de France à Rome. Comme ses prédécesseurs, Lefèbvre étudie l’antique et observe attitudes, courbes et tensions du corps. Notre baigneuse évoque dans son attitude le Spinario ainsi que les œuvres d’illustres sculpteurs du XVIII e siècle comme Etienne Falconet ou Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain. Toutefois, par son grand format, notre tableau s’apparente davantage à un tableau d’histoire et montre l’ambition du jeune peintre encore en formation. Notre toile réinterprète le thème de la Diane au bain essuyant son pied – un motif également représenté par Antoine Watteau vers 1715-1716 - dans une composition empreinte de poésie et dont la fraicheur de la source semble nous parvenir. 1 - La Charité romaine se trouve au musée municipal de Melun (FNAC FH 860-172). Written in the form of a first-person confessional monologue, it describes the protagonist, Fiammetta's, passion for Panfilo, a Florentine merchant, and takes place in Naples. It has been characterised as the first psychological novel in Western literature. It consists of a prologue and nine chapters.

STUDY FOR THE COMTESSE DE KERCHOVE PORTRAIT pencil on paper; unframed 36 x 25½cm. / 14¼ x 10in. The Comtesse de Kerchove (Maria Lippens) married Oswald de Kerchove de Denterghem, a Belgian liberal politician. This study is believed to be the prelude to Lefebvre's portrait of the Comtesse, which is currently at the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Gent, Belgium.
