Dipinto raffigurante l’incontro tra Davide e Abigail, episodio tratto dal Primo libro di Samuele (25), nel quale la donna, con saggezza e diplomazia, riesce a placare l’ira del futuro re d’Israele offrendogli doni e riconoscendone il destino regale. La scena è sintetizzata con efficacia narrativa: Abigail, elegantemente abbigliata e accompagnata da un giovane servo, porge frutti su un vassoio, mentre Davide, in armatura e seguito dai suoi uomini, appare colto in atteggiamento riflessivo. Per caratteristiche stilistiche e compositive, l’opera si inserisce nell’ambito della pittura veneta del secondo Seicento, mostrando un linguaggio di matrice internazionale, in cui convergono cultura fiamminga e tradizione veneziana. L’impianto scenico, la ricchezza dei costumi e il gusto per la narrazione “di historia” rimandano alla lezione di Paolo Veronese, mentre l’uso calibrato della luce, con morbidi trapassi luministici, rivela una sensibilità aggiornata sulle esperienze dei pittori tenebrosi attivi nel Veneto. L’opera evidenzia inoltre una conoscenza mediata della pittura barocca dell’Italia centrale e una certa affinità con soluzioni figurative riconducibili anche alla cultura di Pieter Paul Rubens, soprattutto nella resa dei panneggi e nella costruzione delle figure. Sulla base di tali elementi, il dipinto è riferibile a Valentin Lefèvre, artista belga attivo a Venezia dalla fine degli anni Cinquanta del XVII secolo, noto per la sua capacità di fondere modelli nordici e tradizione veneta in una sintesi originale e colta. L’attribuzione trova riscontro in confronti stilistici con opere quali Rebecca al pozzo, Diana e Callisto, Apollo e la Sibilla Cumana e la Presentazione al tempio, che presentano analogie nei volti, nelle silhouettes e nel trattamento dei drappeggi. Opera probabilmente destinata a una quadreria privata, come suggeriscono il formato e la qualità esecutiva, si colloca nella fase matura dell’artista. Lefebvre h: 121 w: 174,50 cm Provenance : Conservé dans la descendance du capitaine de hussards Hippolyte Charles (1772-1837) depuis au moins la seconde partie du XIXe siècle ; Collection particulière, Drôme Commentaire : On ne sait que trop peu de choses sur la vie et la carrière de Valentin Lefebvre. Longtemps oublié ou confondu avec des homonymes, l'histoire de l'art redonne peu à peu, au gré des découvertes, ses lettres de noblesses à celui qui fut l'un des 'véronésiens' les plus appréciés dans la lagune au milieu du XVIIe siècle. Les révélations par l'historien Ugo Ruggieri de son testament, rédigé à Venise le 21 août 1677 et de son acte de décès quelques temps plus tard permettent une meilleure clarification de la chronologie de sa carrière. Valentin Lefebvre naît à Bruxelles en 1637, et après être passé par Paris vers 1654, ce qui est attesté par un dessin copiant Laurent de La Hyre, il s'installe à Venise au plus tard avant 1664. Outre l'information importante quant à son passage en France, cette donnée nous confirme l'intérêt du peintre pour l'art français de son temps et plus précisément pour l'atticisme parisien dont Laurent de La Hyre fut l'un des grands prophètes. A son arrivée à Venise, il se prend d'admiration pour l'œuvre de Paolo Véronèse dont il deviendra l'un des plus grands imitateurs. L'historien Luigi Lanzi évoque Valentin Lefebvre en des termes élogieux à la fin du XVIIIe siècle : " Valentin le Febre de Bruxelles a été omis par Orlandi ; et nombre de ses estampes d'après les œuvres de Paolo [Véronèse] et des meilleurs Vénitiens sont attribuées à un autre le Febre. Il peignit peu, et toujours suivant les traces de Véronèse, dont il fut l'un des copistes et imitateurs les plus heureux. Ses visages n'ont rien d'ultramontain, son coloris rien de son siècle vilain ; sa touche est puissante, mais n'offense pas. Ses petites peintures sont recherchées et très finies "1. Notre toile constitue donc une vraie rareté du fait de sa paternité très probable à Valentin Lefebvre d'une part, mais aussi en ce qu'elle reprend l'une des compositions les plus fameuses de l'histoire de la peinture ancienne. Le tableau original fut commandé à Véronèse pour orner le réfectoire du monastère San Giorgio Maggiore. Le contrat précise que l'artiste peut peindre autant de figures qu'il est possible d'en faire entrer dans le tableau. Fort de dimensions colossales (677 x 994 centimètres), c'est très exactement cent trente figures que l'artistes plaça sur sa toile. Il raconte l'histoire du célèbre premier miracle du Christ, qui lança sa vie publique. Très précisément le peintre choisit le moment où la Vierge Marie semble indiquer à son fils, tous deux placés au centre de la composition, qu'il faudrait qu'il agisse en transformant l'eau en vin. Aujourd'hui conservé au musée du Louvre, le tableau quitta sa place originelle au terme du traité de Campo-Formio du 17 octobre 1797 au titre des contributions de guerre à la suite de la première campagne d'Italie. Découpé en plusieurs morceaux, la toile fut reconstituée avant d'entrer au Museum central des arts (actuel musée du Louvre) le 31 juillet 1798. 1.
