Date: 20th century Description: This etching by Gustave Leheutre (1861-1932) shows a tranquil view of the Canal d'Eu, which is located not far from the northern French coastal town of Tréport. On the right-hand side of the picture is a riverside path with half-timbered buildings, while on the left the water stretches into the depths of the picture, where ship masts and flat shoreline development can be seen in the background. The composition is characterised by clear lines and a finely graduated brightness that creates a calm, slightly melancholy atmosphere. Date: 19th century Description: The etching shows a quiet, gently curving alley with historic half-timbered buildings in the old town of Troyes, France. Particularly striking is the overhanging upper storey of a house with a steep pitched roof, typical of the Gothic-influenced, medieval architecture of Champagne. The perspective leads the viewer's gaze into the depths of the street, where several chimneys and gables structure the horizon. On the left, the street space is largely empty, while the small-scale façade structure dominates on the right. The etching is by Gustave Leheutre (1861-1932), known for his atmospherically calm cityscapes. French Artist Gustave Leheutre [Tree, Landscape]. Etching is pencil signed lower right and the sheet measures 8 in. x 10.375 in. Unframed, loose and not mounted or glued down. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective.
