The print is hand-signed Clare Leighton in pencil in the lower right margin and inscribed Grey's Bridge and 15/30 in the lower left margin. The work is housed in a black wooden frame.     Clare Veronica Hope Leighton (1898-1989) Harvest Days Circa 1941 The block print, numbered 12 from an edition of 30 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil lower right and titled lower left. The image first appeared as a full-page illustration for the 1940 Centenary Edition of Thomas Hardy's novel, Under the Greenwood Tree, or the Mellstock Quire, published by the Macmillan Company (London and New York). Another 30 impressions were printed on Japan paper signed and inscribed by the artist as the present example. Images from this very low edition are rarely found. Image measures 3 x 5, sheet is 5 x 8 inches. No frame. Clare Leighton was born in London in 1898 and became a prolific artist, writer, and illustrator, best known for her wood engravings. She belonged to a generation of young women whose opportunities and outlook expanded following the First World War. Leighton studied at Brighton Art School, the Slade School of Art, and the Central School of Arts and Crafts. In 1939, she moved to the United States, eventually taking up a teaching position at Duke University. Over her career, Leighton produced more than 840 wood engravings, and this strong work ethic is reflected in her art. Drawn to images of rural workers, her pieces tactfully capture the honest beauty of the workers' tasks amidst the hardships of their daily life.
