Attributed to JULES LELEU (1883 - 1961), circa 1930. Table. Oak, fruit veneer and bakelite.

              Est: €1,500 - €1,800

Attributed to JULES LELEU (1883 - 1961), circa 1930. Table. Oak, fruit veneer and bakelite. Measurements: 66 x 90 x 58 cm. Table with slender cabriole legs with a waist that appears cut with a sinuous game that harmonizes with the curves of the legs and the tabletop. Aesthetically the work presents similarities to pieces by Leleu, who achieved great recognition for his use of rare woods, ivory inlays and other luxurious elements that were a hallmark of much Art Deco furniture, His furniture was widely admired for its classic lines and modernity, two seemingly opposing ideas that Leleu knew how to combine to perfection to create his elegant and distinctive designs. His furniture was often compared to that of his most famous contemporary, Emile Ruhlmann, and some of his work might seem to have been inspired by Ruhnmann. Jules Leleu (1883 - 1961) born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, Leleu studied decorative painting, and at the age of 26 succeeded his father in the family painting business. With his brother he started working in the field of Decoration. After World War I, Leleu specialized in furniture making. He opened a gallery in Paris, Maison Leleu, in 1924 and exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Industrielle et Arts Decoratifs, winning a grand prize at the exhibition. Leleu designed the Grand Salon des Ambassadeurs of the League of Nations in Geneva and the French embassies of several nations, as well as the ocean liners SS Ile de France and SS Normandie.

JULES LELEU (Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, 1883 - Paris, 1961). France, Louis XVI period, ca. 1770. Mahogany, rosewood and amaranth. The truncated cone-shaped feet with tinted marquetry simulating grooves. Topped with small bronze sabots and gilt bronze handles. The hinged top contains a mirror and a marble top. It has side drawers on both sides and also on the front. Signed. Provenance: Sothebys New York, 5 and 6 December 1991, KECK Collection. La Lanterne BEL AIR California, lot 270. Measurements: 70,5 x 44,5 x 38,7 cm. This is a refined French piece of furniture that can be used as a desk, a dressing table or a side table. Designed by Jules Leleu following Louis XVI models, it is characterised by the elegant sobriety of the neoclassical style. The body rests on slender stipe legs, with side and front drawers at the waist. The top opens to reveal an interior mirror as a dressing table. The wood combines stained marquetry and filleting, enhancing the natural beauty of the grain. Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, Jules Leleu studied decorative painting, and at the age of 26 succeeded his father in the family painting business. With his brother he started working in the field of Decoration. After the First World War, Leleu specialised in furniture making. He opened a gallery in Paris, Maison Leleu, in 1924 and exhibited at the Exposition Industrielle et Arts Decoratifs of 1925, winning a grand prize at the exhibition. Leleu designed the Grand Salon des Ambassadeurs of the League of Nations in Geneva and the French embassies of several nations, as well as the ocean liners SS Ile de France and SS Normandie.
