    Apr. 25, 2026

ENVIRONMENT OF SIR PETER LELY (1618–1680) "Portrait of the Countess of Northumberland"

    Est: €13,000 - €15,000

CIRCLE OF SIR PETER LELY (1618-1680) "Portrait of the Countess of Northumberland" Oil on canvas, relined, unsigned. The present bust-length portrait depicts the Countess of Northumberland in the aristocratic style of the English Baroque characteristic of Sir Peter Lely. The subject is shown in a magnificent, light silk gown with blue accents and elaborate jewelry, with special attention drawn to the fine rendering of the pearl necklace and the curly, contemporary hairstyle, which directs the viewer's gaze to the softly modeled face. Lely, the successor of Anthony van Dyck as court painter to Charles II, shaped the ideal of beauty during the English Restoration. The painting is distinguished by the treatment typical of Lely of Fabrics and the use of lighting effects that emphasize the social status and elegance of the Countess. HxW: 77/64 cm. Frame, HxW: 98/84 cm. The painting is in a condition consistent with its age and has been professionally relined in the past (backed with a secondary canvas to reinforce the original material). Under UV light, retouching can be seen, particularly in the upper background area and sporadically in the shadowed sections. Provenance: on the reverse are various historical labels, including: a handwritten label attributing the work to Sir Peter Lely and identifying the sitter, a printed auction or inventory label (No. 32), and a transport label from the renowned Parisian art shipping company Ch. Pottier (Maison Pottier), indicating a notable historical provenance and a history of international exhibition or trade. SHIPPING TO THE USA MUST BE ARRANGED BY THE BUYER.

The defence of the castle was led by Lady Stanley. For three months, the Countess, in the absence of her husband,  who was away defending the Isle of Man, repeatedly refused to surrender her home, and instead fortified the castle against the enemy.  The siege was broken when Royalist help arrived in May, led by the King’s nephew, Prince Rupert. She fled to the Isle of Man, but after her husband’s capture at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, and his subsequent beheading, she surrendered the island. Dimensions: (Frame) 47 in. (H) x 40 in. Est: €800 - €1,000

Follower of PETER LELY (1618-1680); 18th and 19th century. "Portrait of Barbara Villiers, the Duchess of Cleveland." Oil on panel. Presents faults. It has a frame of the nineteenth century. Measurements: 35 x 28.5 cm; 41 x 45 cm (frame). This painting follows the model of the work of Peter Lely entitled "Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland (ca 1641-1709", which was made around 1665 as part of the series of eleven portraits that the painter made dedicated to the beauties of Windsor. Currently the painting is part of the Royal Collection of the United Kingdom and is exhibited at Hampton Court Palace. In the work the painter offers us the portrait of a young lady of beautiful features and elegant position, hairstyle in the fashion of the early decades of the eighteenth century. The distinguished lady depicted wears a dress of voluminous folds and great sumptuousness. In her delicate hands she holds a spear and with the other a shield. Both the sumptuous flight of the dress and the bluish mantle behind her stand out for the chiaroscuro folds of its fall. At a formal level, it is worth mentioning how the figure is strongly illuminated, highlighted against a classical background that continues the artists' taste for immortalizing the portrayed in the exterior, following the then prevailing fashion in England. The brushstroke used by the artist is changing, much more precise, practically invisible, in the face, hair and bust of the woman, but looser, almost sketchy, in the dress, cloak and background. Aesthetically the work is very close to the painting of the artist Peter Lely who, although of Dutch origin, spent most of his career in England, where he became the dominant court portraitist. He became a naturalized British subject and was knighted in 1679. Lely studied painting in Haarlem, where he may have been apprenticed to Pieter de Grebber. He became master of the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem in 1637. He arrived in London around 1643. His early English paintings, mainly religious mythological scenes, or portraits set in a pastoral landscape, show influences of Anthony van Dyck and the Dutch Baroque. Lely's portraits were well received and he succeeded Anthony van Dyck. As the most fashionable portraitist in England. He became a freeman of the Painter-Stainers' Company in 1647 and was portraitist to Charles I. His talent ensured that his career was not interrupted by Charles's execution, and he served Oliver Cromwell. There may be thousands of these portraits, ranging from rare first-rate originals, often of astonishing quality, to crude studio replicas by assistants trained to imitate Lely's style. Lely played an important role in the introduction of mezzotint in Britain, realizing its possibilities for publicizing his portraits.

Peter Lely (1618 - 1680) Ritratto di giovane. Dal "Giovane in armatura" di Anton van Dyck

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Alle copie da Van Dyck è dedicato il contributo di Sir Oliver Millar al Catalogue raisonné del maestro (Van Dyck – A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, by Susan Barnes, Nora De Poorter, Oliver Millar e Horst Vey, Londra, 2004): "especially towards the end of his life”, nota, “was assigned to Van Dyck’s assistants, and there was a heavy demand for repetitions, whether replicas, part replicas, variants or copies […] Sometimes Van Dyck would himself paint a new detail in a repetition otherwise painted entirely by an assistant”, whereas his “finest English portraits are painted…noticeably with a greater variety of touch.”
