Aristarch Vasil'evic Lentulov Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1882 - d. 1943

Aristarkh Vasilyevich Lentulov (January 16, 1882 - April 15, 1943) was a major Russian avant-garde artist of Cubist orientation who also worked on set designs for the theatre.

Aristarkh Lentulov was born in the town of Nizhny Lomov in Penza Oblast, Russia into the family of a rural priest. He studied art in the Penza and Kiev art schools from 1897 to 1905, and then in the private studio of Dmitry Kardovsky in Saint Petersburg in 1906.

He lived in Moscow from 1909, and he was one of the founders of the avant-garde exhibiting association of artists, the Jack of Diamonds group. This group remained active until its dissolution in 1916.

From 1910 to 1911 Lentulov studied at the studio of Henri Le Fauconnier and the Académie de La Palette in Paris. The 1910s were for Lentulov a period of creative productivity and experimentation. He was drawn to Orphism influenced by the French artist Robert Delaunay. Whilst there, he became acquainted with contemporary French painters such as Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger, Fernand Léger and Robert Delaunay and after absorbing fauvists' and cubists' principles, developed his own unique colorful style of painting. Later, after his return to Russia in 1912 he became a major influence on what to become the Russian futurism and in particular Cubo-Futurism. Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich were both influenced by him.

Lentulov also formed another group, with Vladimir Mayakovsky and Kazimir Malevich, called Today's Lubock (Segodnyashnii Lubok). They produced satire art that was anti-Austria and anti-Germany. The art pulled inspiration from Russian folklore and lubok art. Lentulov's own art was heavily inspired by traditional and folk Russian architecture.[1]

From pre-revolutionary times, Lentulov was actively involved in various theatrical projects, designing for plays in the Kamerny Theatre (The Merry Wives of Windsor, 1916) and contributing sets for a production of Scriabin's Prometheus in the Bolshoi Theatre in 1919.

In 1928 Lentulov entered into the Society of Moscow artists, which included artists formerly associated with the Jack of Diamonds group. He became chairman of the Society and also started teaching at the Russian state art and technical school (VKhUTEMAS).

Lentulov died in Moscow and is buried in the Vagankovo Cemetery.

      Est: £200,000 - £300,000

      * LENTULOV, ARISTARKH (1882-1943) Still Life with Cakes and Fruit Oil on canvas, 78 by 110.5 cm. Executed in the late 1930s. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the experts A. Lyubimova and L. Shakirova. Authenticity certificate from the expert Yu. Rybakova. Aristarkh Lentulov’s Still Life with Cakes and Fruit , executed in the 1930s, is from a late period in the artist’s career that was characterised by an obvious change in his manner of painting, prompted by his desire to join the officially supported realist movement. Left far behind are the artist’s radical experiments with colour and texture that brought him fame in the second decade of the century, a period that saw the blossoming of the legendary artistic group the Jack of Diamonds . A particular warmth and refinement marks out the work of his mature period. Lentulov achieves this by applying a certain restraint to his painting, and replacing a palette of contrasting colours with one based on toned down, muted hues. Nonetheless, his artistic manner – sweeping, seemingly spontaneous – remains intact. The painting offered for sale is testament to the change in Lentulov’s view on still life, which for him evolved into a valuable subject in its own right, one not to be distorted in its artistic representation. In striving to be figurative, Lentulov reinstates classic painterly values, such as chiaroscuro, spatial planes, light and aerial perspective. The predominant shades are now violet, various greens, red-brown and orange, and the composition is marked by the crowding together of objects laid out in a pile, in a deliberate display of the abundance of plain fare. The texture of the painted surface in this poetically spiritual, placid and colouristically restrained work demonstrates the striking mastery of Lentulov’s technique. Even after he had made the transition to the everyday, nuts-and-bolts world of still-life painting, Lentulov’s work of the 1930s is still distinguished by a rich, resonant imagery that shows great affinity with the Jack of Diamonds aesthetic. This is exemplified brilliantly by the still life offered in this catalogue.

*LENTULOV, ARISTARKH (1882-1943), Bath House Oil on canvas, 58 by 36 cm. Executed c. 1908. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist’s family by the renowned journalist Paolo Valentino, a correspondent for Corriere della Sera, in Moscow, 1995. Acquired from the above by the present owner. Private collection, Europe. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by Marianna Lentulova, the artist’s daughter (inscription on the reverse). Authenticity has also been confirmed by Fedor Lentulov, the artist’s great-grandson (inscriptions on the reverse and on the photograph of the work). Authenticity has also been confirmed by the expert Yu. Rybakova. The work is accompanied by a letter from Marianna Lentulova, confirming authenticity. The work is also accompanied by a letter from Paolo Valentino, confirming the provenance. Aristarkh Lentulov, who ranks as one of the most important Russian avant-garde artists of the 20th century, had already established his credentials as a tireless experimenter in the 1900s when he became interested in the art of the World of Art group, the decorativism of the Blue Rose movement and of Maurice Denis, creating paintings of bright sunlit landscapes and the resplendent series of “bathing on the Sura”, to which the present work, Bath House, in all probability belongs. These works, painted at the dacha settlement of Akhuna on the Sura river near Penza, betray an eye that was familiar with the work of the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, a trained hand and fully formed analytical powers, together with a subtle sense of colour and shape. The sparse pointelle of Bath House is executed in dim, muted, Symbolist tones that set a light green “Veronese” colouration against mottled pink with a yellow tinge. This combination of colours in a vivacious and fresh summer sketch is the epitome of Lentulov’s scenic preferences, which, although they were to develop further, remained as a constant feature in works from nearly all periods of his creative life. Several works from the so-called “bathing on the Sura” series, painted in the summer of 1907, were presented by Lentulov at the Wreath-Stephanos exhibition in Moscow, where they drew highly positive reviews, and the artist continued his studies on the banks of the picturesque river in the following year. Most of the surviving works by Lentulov from this period are now a part of museum collections in Moscow, St Petersburg and Penza, so the appearance of Bath House, issued directly from the artist’s family, at a MacDougall’s auction is a rare and noteworthy event.

      * LENTULOV, ARISTARKH (1882-1943) Still Life with Cakes and Fruit. Oil on canvas, 78 by 110.5 cm. Executed in the late 1930s. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the experts A. Lyubimova, L. Shakirova and O. Golubeva. Authenticity certificate from the expert Yu. Rybakova. Aristarkh Lentulov's Still Life with Cakes and Fruit from the 1930s is from a late period in the artist's work characterized by an obvious change in his manner of painting, known to be prompted by his desire to join the officially supported realist movement. Left far behind are the artist's radical experiments with colour and texture that had brought him fame in the second decade of the century, years that saw the blossoming of the legendary artistic group the Jack of Diamonds. A particular warmth and refinement marks out the work of his mature period. Lentulov achieves this by a certain restraint in his use of painterly resources and a palette of muted hues that provide less contrast. Nonetheless, he keeps his sweeping, almost elemental manner of painting, which remains unchanged. Still Life with Cakes and Fruit is evidence of a change that began in the 1930s affecting the artist's very view of nature, which now becomes worthy of standing on its own, no longer subject to distortions. In striving to be figurative, Lentulov rehabilitates classic values in art such as light and shade, space and depth, and the medium of atmospheric light. The tints that become dominant are violet, various greens, red-brown and orange, and compositional structure is marked by the crowding together of objects laid out in a buffet and displaying a deliberate abundance of plain fare. Given the painting's inspiring poetry, placidity and restrained colours, the texture of the painted surface implacably demonstrates the striking mastery of Lentulov's brush when he creates his dynamic impasto. Even after he had made the transition to the everyday, nuts-and-bolts world of still-life painting, Lentulov's work of the 1930s is still distinguished by a rich and sonorous quality of image which has such affinity with the Jack of Diamonds aesthetic. This is exemplified brilliantly by the still life offered in this catalogue.

LENTULOV, ARISTARKH (1882-1943) - Still Life With Lilacs

      Est: £60,000 - £90,000

LENTULOV, ARISTARKH (1882-1943) Still Life With Lilacs , inscribed by the artist's daughter M. Lentulova on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 65.5 by 88.5 cm. Executed in the late 1920s. Provenance: Anonymous sale; Russian Art and Paintings , Sotheby's London, 27 November 2007, lot 259. Private collection, UK. The famous Russian artist Aristarkh Lentulov's work of the 1920s and 1930s is distinguished by the restraint in the painterly means he employs, and delicacy of manner. His radical experiments with colour and textural form which had brought the artist fame as a "Russian Yarila" ( Sun god ), and his membership of the legendary Jack of Diamonds group, had been left far behind. The well-known art critic Alexander Benois' prophesy that the "scarecrows" of 1912 would "in time become classics" began, in Lentulov's creative work, to take on flesh and blood. Still Life with Lilacs is graphic evidence, clearer than ever before, of Lentulov's quest for self-contained compositional structure, for picturesqueness . His choice of subject, modest but exquisite, speaks of the artist being drawn towards elegance in the complexity of structured form. With its poetic spirituality, tranquillity and restrained palette, the painting is distinguished by the richness and orotund fullness of the image, in the Jack of Diamonds spirit. In Still Life with Lilacs the artist's very view of nature changes, as the subject from now on has its own independent value which is not susceptible to distortion. There is a rehabilitation of such classic artistic values as light and shade, spatial disposition and ambient light and atmosphere. Impressionist touches make a comeback, the resonance of the image becomes more private and emotional, and the elemental forces of colour and painting are pacified. In the new painting, objects seem robbed of their outlines, submerged in the medium of light, as opposed to the representational Jack of Diamonds still lifes that portray their subjects with emphasis. In this work the artist creates a type of intimate lyrical still life that is strikingly different from his early work but at the same time maintains its considerable artistic worth.
