Signée "A Léonard " et cachet de fondeur "Susse Fr Ets". Dimensions totaes : h. ca. 58 cm - Danseuse : 53 cm A l’Exposition Universelle de Paris en 1900, Agathon Léonard présente sur le stand de la Manufacture de Sèvres son fameux "surtout" intitulé "Jeu de l’écharpe", composé de quinze statuettes de danseuses inspirées par les chorégraphies de Loïe Fuller. L’année suivante, ces mêmes figures, parmi lesquelles la Danseuse aux Cothurnes, sont produites par le fondeur Susse Frères et proposées en bronze doré, bronze argenté ou, dans leur version la plus raffinée, en bronze chryséléphantin, où les parties représentant la peau sont réalisées en ivoire, comme c’est le cas ici. - Sculpteur belge naturalisé français, Léonard Agathon Van Weydeveldt dit Agathon Léonard suit une formation à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Lille puis à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris où il s'installe durablement en 1868. Très impliqué dans le mouvement du style Art Nouveau, il adhère à la Société des Artistes Français en 1887 et à la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts en 1897. S'il travaille des médaillons, des statuettes en bronze et des céramiques, ses oeuvres sont essentiellement centrées sur la figure humaine, surtout féminine.

Sculpture depicts a young woman receiving the Christian sacrament of Confirmation. She is wearing a head covering, a simple dress, bracelet, and clogs. In the crook of her right arm is a laurel branch. Her hands hold a rosery with a cross. Her face, neck and arms are carved ivory and set within finely finished gilt bronze. Base having a Renaissance brown patina is incised with the artist's signature "A. LEONARD" and the foundry mark from the Les Neveux de Jacques Lehmann foundry, Paris. Above the foundry mark is the impressed cast #19. This item qualifies for the De Minimis exemption under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 and the African Elephant Conservation Act (AfECA) of 1989, as implemented by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), as it contains less than 20% by volume of elephant ivory, which is a non-detachable part of an antique item over 100 years old. Prospective purchasers are advised that several countries and states prohibit the transport or importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to coral, ivory, and tortoiseshell. Agathon Leonard, Belgian, 1841 to 1923, bas relief gilt bronze plaque depicting a portrait of Saint Cecilia. Signed with a casting, A. Leonard, and dated 1888, lower to the center. Framed. Marked with an impressed stamp, Thiebaut Freres Paris Fumiere and Cie Succs, lower left. Presented at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, the work is a portrait of Saint Cecilia, the theme of saints being then very fashionable. The bronze bas relief represents the young woman in half length profile. Born in Belgium in 1841, Agathon Leonard studied at the Academic Schools of Lille and then at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. After settling in the capital where he exhibited at the Salon of 1868, he joined the Society of French Artists and then the National Society of Fine Arts in 1897. Committed to the current of Art Nouveau, he exhibited many pieces, in particular at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. He produced many medallions, statuettes in bronze, porcelain or Sevres biscuit. LÉONARD (46cm high, 46cm wide) Provenance: Design, Bonhams London: Wednesday 15 November 2006, lot 127 Footnote: Exhibited: L’Art Nouveau, La Révolution Décorative, Pinacoteque de Paris, 28 April-8 September 2013 Art Nouveau, Il Trionfo della Bellezza, Venaria Réale , Palazzo Venaria, Torino, 17 April 2019 - January 2020. Note: Agathon Léonard is best remembered as the French Art Nouveau sculptor responsible for creating a series of works inspired by the dancer Loïe Fuller. First produced for Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres in 1899 and exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, they were then executed in bronze at the Süsse Frères foundry, as a result of their popularity. This present bust possesses the same grace as the dancers, with the elegant flowing lines and arabesques of the hair and the beautiful serenity of the pose. Between 1896 and 1914 he regularly exhibited at the Salon de la société nationale des beaux-arts. A list of these works including a number of marble busts is provided in Ingelore Böstge’s Agathon Léonard Le Geste Art Nouveau, Paris, 2003, pp 120-122. Two of these are entitled Flore des Champs - one in 1905 model number 1818 and the other in 1907 model number 2001. This seems a plausible title for the present lot as the girl has daisies and poppies in her hair, together with ears of corn. Born in Belgium, Agathon Léonard was naturalised French in 1887 and in 1900 he was awarded the chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, the highest order of merit in France.

Agathon Leonard (1841 - 1923) "Ausdruckstanz" (Expressionist Dance) Bronze Sculpture. Agathon is one of the well-known French Art Nouveau sculptors. Born in Lille in 1841, he first studied there before moving to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Eugene Delaplanche. His work is held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Abbeville and Nantes Museums. He became a member of the Societe des Artistes Francois in 1887 and the Society Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1897. He was made a chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur in 1900.
