Stanislas Lépine verschrieb sich dem Malen der Stadt Paris, wobei seine Gemälde häufig Ansichten mit Brücken über die Seine zeigen. Das hier angebotene grossformatige Gemälde spiegelt diese Vorliebe auf wunderbare Weise wider. Lépine gelingt es bei dieser Ansicht auf die Pont Marie – einer der ältesten Brücken der französischen Hauptstadt – und den Quai des Célestins durch die geschickte Staffelung verschiedener Diagonalen der Komposition eine eindrückliche Räumlichkeit zu verleihen. Eine Variation dieses Motivs in kleinerem Format befindet sich in der Sammlung des Musée d'Orsay in Paris (Inv.-Nr. RF 1972 25).

Verso: canvas with stamp of a Parisian supplier. The canvas has been restored in one area, with retouching at the same spot. Framed. Painted one year before the artist's death, this work is a characteristic example of Stanislas Lepine's style. Modest in format and restrained in composition, it encapsulates the essential qualities of his art: a delicate sense of light, a muted colour palette, and an almost intimate relationship with the landscape. The scene depicts a sparse woodland with a small stream and the silhouette of a town in the distance - unspectacular at first glance, yet imbued with poetic tranquility. Between 1860 and 1875, Lepine studied in the Paris studio of Corot. He was also influenced by Johan Barthold Jongkind and made his debut at the Salon as early as 1859. Entstanden ein Jahr vor dem Tod des Künstlers, stellt dieses Werk ein charakteristisches Beispiel fur den Stil von Stanislas Lepine dar. Bescheiden im Format und zurückhaltend in der Komposition, verkörpert es all das, was sein Schaffen ausmacht: ein feines Gespur für Licht, eine gedämpfte Farbpalette und eine beinahe intime Beziehung zur Landschaft. Dargestellt ist ein lichter Wald mit einem kleinen Bach und der Silhouette einer Stadt im Hintergrund - eine unspektakulare, aber von poetischer Ruhe durchdrungene Szene. Zwischen 1860 und 1875 besuchte Lepine das Atelier von Corot in Paris, stand unter dem Einfluss von Jongkind und debutierte bereits 1859 im Salon. Provenienz: Nachlass Dr. Jean Michaux.

Stanislas Lépine zeigt uns in dem hier angebotenen Gemälde die Île de la Grande Jatte, eine in der Seine gelegene Insel im Westen von Paris. Lépine gelingt es, die sommerliche Atmosphäre der dargestellten Landschaft insbesondere durch das raffinierte Spiel von Licht und Schatten wiederzugeben. Neben einem Angler und den im Gras pickenden Hühnern, wird die ländliche Idylle durch eine Hochzeitsgesellschaft bevölkert, die an der Seine entlangspaziert. Die Île de la Grande Jatte nahmen zahlreiche Künstler zum Motiv ihrer Gemälde, so zeigen das beliebte Ausflugsziel der Pariser Gesellschaft auch Maler wie Claude Monet (1840–1926), Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) oder Georges Seurat (1859–1891). Diese spektakuläre, in Öl auf Leinwand ausgeführte, Arbeit kann zweifelsohne als eines der Hauptwerke des Pariser Malers Stanislas Lépine angesehen werden. Lépine eröffnet uns von einem noch unbebauten Fleck auf dem Montmartre den Blick über das Dächermeer der Metropole Paris, die im 19. Jahrhundert zu den grössten Städten der Welt zählte. Beinahe anachronistisch wirkt der Kontrast zwischen dem Hirtenjungen mit seinen Ziegen im Bildvordergrund und der sich dahinter auftuenden Weite von städtischer Architektur. Und so führt uns Lépine mithilfe der Figurenstaffage geschickt in das Gemälde hinein und leitet unseren Blick direkt auf den Eiffelturm, der im Dunst der Ferne in den Pariser Himmel emporragt. Der Ausblick über Paris zeigt uns zudem noch die Silhouetten weiterer weltberühmter Gebäude der Stadt, wie etwa das Panthéon und den Invalidendom. Die Darstellung des Eiffelturms gibt uns auch einen Anhaltspunkt dafür, dass es sich bei dem vorliegenden Gemälde um ein Spätwerk Lépines handelt. So wurde der Bau des Turmes im Jahr 1889 vollendet, drei Jahre später verstarb Lépine 56-jährig. Ansichten der Stadt Paris, auf denen der Eiffelturm zu sehen ist, sind daher im Gesamtwerk Lépines selten. Das hier angebotene Gemälde kann als eine der letzten Hommagen von Stanislas Lépine an seine Stadt betrachtet werden. Meisterhaft legt er uns mit diesem Gemälde Paris zu Füssen.
