        NATHAN LERNER (1913–1997) | Eye in window, New York 1943 Image Size: 33,5 x 37 cm English: Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1970s on double-weight semi-matte paper, in good condition. Signed, titled and dated by the photographer in pencil on the reverse Nathan Lerner attended the National Academy of Art and Art Institute of Chicago and was also one of the original students at New Bauhaus in 1937. After he graduated at the prestigious School of Design he served there as the Head of photography department. Within this period he created this image, which is one of his most renowed. Deutsch: Gelatinesilberabzug, geprintet in den 1970er Jahren auf "double-weight" halbmattem Papier, in gutem Zustand. Rückseitig mit Bleistift vom Fotografen signiert, betitelt und datiert Nathan Lerner besuchte die National Academy of Art und das Art Institute of Chicago und gehörte 1937 zu den ersten Studenten am New Bauhaus. Nach seinem Abschluss an der renommierten School of Design war er dort als Leiter der Fotografieabteilung tätig. In dieser Zeit schuf er dieses Bild, das zu seinen bekanntesten zählt.

The gelatin silver print is entitled 'Sleeping Man' and shows him resting on his crossed arms. This work allows the viewer to look closely at the people and their life stories in the big city. Nathan Lerner took this photo during the time when the unemployment rate was more than 25 percent. The photograph is slightly curling and shows faint creases in the right margin, otherwise in very good condition. The image is verso signed 'Nathan Lerner', dated 'San Francisco, 1936', titled 'Sleeping Man' in pencil and shows reference numbers. The sheet size of the photograph is 27.6 x 31.7 cm and it comes lose mounted in a mat. The total dimension is 50 x 40 cm Nathan Lerner (1913-1997) Nathan Lerner was an important photographer from Chicago, whose worked helped to define the city. The New York Times wrote about the artist that his work was inseparable from the development of the visual culture in Chicago.
