    Estimate: $100 - $150

    Description:

    Mirage (1969)
    Screenprint
    Signed lower right, Edition 19/100

    Donated by Darlene Orlov

This item ships from NY 11201

Canadian painter, muralist, and printmaker, Rita Letendre, combines the strength of shape, composition, and color in Mirage. Inspired by geometric and minimalist works of art, Mirage plays with the expectation of perfection by presenting shapes that are slightly off-kilter. The red hues slightly shift, causing the shapes to bounce off of each other. ,,Mirage is visually playful in that the white streaks draw the eye to the bottom of the composition, but then the looming black triangle lifts it. Inspired by the work of Franz Kline, though in search of further depth, Letendre challenges the conventions of the minimalist and colorblock schools. The longer the viewer engages with the work, the more that the boundaries of foreground and background merge. ,,~ Evie Adsetts, Student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Master of Arts in Art Market Studies.

    Artist's Biography
Rita Letendre was born on November 1, 1928 in Drummondville, Québec, to an Abenaki mother and Québécois father. The youngest of seven children, she lived with her maternal grandmother for a few years before her family relocated to Montréal in 1941. Letendre attended the École des Beaux-Arts for nearly two years before she began her career in abstract painting. She is the recipient of the 2010 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, 2016 Paul-Émile-Borduas Award, and is a member of the Orders of Canada, Ontario and Québec. She has had over sixty solo shows and her works are in the collections of numerous Canadian and American museums, including the National Gallery of Canada.

    Lot 18: RITA LETENDRE, R.C.A., NIGHTS, 1972, acrylic on canvas, 30 ins x 40 ins; 76.2 cms x 101.6 cms

    Auction Date: Sep 17, 2020

    Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000

    Description: RITA LETENDRE, R.C.A.
    NIGHTS, 1972

    acrylic on canvas
signed and dated; also signed, titled, and dated on the reverse
    30 ins x 40 ins; 76.2 cms x 101.6 cms

    Provenance:
    Gallery Moos, Toronto
    Private Collection, Toronto

Rita Letendre established a vital presence in the languages of postwar abstraction. Her paintings of the 1950s and early 1960s were characterized by gestural impasto, an affinity for and association with Paul-Émile Bourduas and the Automatistes. After a 1965 sojourn in California – and her first major public mural, Sunforces at California State University, Long Beach – Letendre’s work became more precise or “hard edged,” and initially near black and white monochromatic. One source suggests a shift due to her first silkscreens, but it also coincided with a period of hard-edge works internationally, as seen in the 1965 MoMA exhibition The Responsive Eye. But unlike much of the optical and constructive tendencies of the time, Letendre’s compositional space expressed a dynamic quality and structure, akin to the c.1911-1913 Futurist “Rayonism” of Mikhael Larianov and Natalia Goncherova.

Nights, 1972 (lot 18) has a dramatic vanishing-point ray with dominant dark and cool graphic colours, whereas in Onled, 1978 (lot 19), a discrete ‘zip’ emerges from the bottom with a counterpoint of softer radiating lines in ochre. Both are classic examples of her studio practice, and used for striking impact in large-scale indoor and outdoor Toronto public commissions in the 1970s. Nights, for Berkshire House, 1971; Onled relates to Irowakan for the Royal Bank Plaza and the painted skylight Joy for the TTC Glencairn Station, both 1977. 1 Letendre continued this compositional space into the late 1980s. She has stated that her cues for painting are internally generated–a “zen-state" –a way of being, knowing the world, and expressing the life forces of the universe.

We thank Ihor Holubizky, cultural essayist and art historian, for contributing this essay. Mr. Holubizky received his PhD in art history from the University of Queensland.

1Joy is the only remaining commissioned work but reinterpreted in 2014. Irowakan is now in the collection of Musée d'art de Joliette. All are illustrated in Rita Letendre: Fire & Light, Art Gallery of Ontario, 2017. Onled also shares strong affinities with the three-metre wide Ononada, 1976. Illustrated pp.40-41

However, Letendre would abruptly reject this idiom in favour of hard-edge geometric paintings. Her work began to feature diverging, converging or parallel rays or vectors as her prime motif. Though originally hard-edge, by 1971 with Letendre's introduction to the air brush, these bands of radiating colour began to develop a softness where they met at the adjoining bands' edge. Some critics interpret this as a return to the "atmospheric notions" Letendre had been investigating during her automatiste period and remark upon "luminous modulations which electrify the canvas," as seen in this lot. According to Dennis Reid, Letendre stopped using the airbrush in 1996. The AGO owns a major 1983 acrylic on canvas by Letendre called, Daybreak. Daybreak was painted after her partner, Kosso Eloul, went through a serious health scare and began recovering. Although this lot and the AGO painting suggest new beginnings and hope, they both share many affinities. Greg Humeniuk writes: “Daybreak is a major statement in Letendre’s career in the early 1980s that demonstrates her confidence using an airbrush to create paintings. The hopeful and optimistic connotations of the title (of the AGO painting and this lot) are consistent with Lentendre’s titling - e.g. Serenity (1983), Lumière Intérieure (2001).”Estimate: $10,000–15,000...
