Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Commercial artist, Lithographer, b. 1865 - d. 1953

Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer (30 September 1865 – 24 September 1953) was a French Symbolist/Art Nouveau artist whose works include paintings, drawings, ceramics, furniture and interior design.

He was born Lucien Lévy to a Jewish family in Algiers, French Algeria. In 1879 he began studying drawing and sculpture in Paris. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1882 where he showed a small ceramic plaque.[1] In 1887 Lévy began making his living near Cannes in southern France, overseeing the decoration of ceramics. From 1886 to 1895 he worked as a ceramic decorator and then as artistic director of the studio of Clément Massier. Around 1892 he signed his first pieces of ceramics, which were influenced by Islamic Art.[1] In 1895 he left for Paris to begin a career in painting; around this time he visited Italy and was further influenced by art of the Renaissance.

Career: In 1896 he exhibited his first pastels and paintings under the name Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer; he'd added the last two syllables of his mother's maiden name (Goldhurmer), likely to differentiate himself from other people named Lévy. His paintings soon became popular with the public and among fellow artists as well. He earned high praise for the academic attention to detail with which he captured figures lost in a Pre-Raphaelite haze of melancholy, contrasted with bright Impressionist colouration. His portrait of writer Georges Rodenbach is perhaps the most striking example of this strange and extraordinary synergy.

After 1901 Lévy-Dhurmer moved away from expressly Symbolist content, incorporating more landscapes into his work because of his travels in Europe and North Africa. He continued to draw inspiration from music and attempted to capture works of great composers such as Beethoven in painted form.

Personal life: In 1914 he married Emmy Fournier, who had been an editor of the early feminist newspaper La Fronde.[2] By this time he was working primarily on landscapes, both oil and pastel, in a style similar to Whistler and Monet.

Death: He died in Le Vésinet in 1953.

(French, 1865-1953; 1844-1917) Seahorse, circa 1887-1896, stamped "L Levy", "Clement/Massier", "Golfe/Juan", "A.M", glazed earthenware, 13-1/4 in. Note: In 1879 Lucien Levy, aged 14 and probably living with his parents, began studying lithography, porcelain decoration, ceramics, design, drawing, and sculpture at the Ecole Superieure de Dessin et de Sculpture in Paris. Only three years later, he showed a small porcelain plaque depicting the Birth of Venus in the highly academic style of Alexandre Cabanel; he continued his independent career in design until 1887, when he became Clement Massier's artistic director. How the two men came together is not known. During his time in Golfe Juan with Massier, Levy-Dhurmer found the time to paint. In the same year that he achieved recognition at the Salon des Artistes Français, he left for Paris to begin a career in painting. At around this time he also visited Italy and was influenced by art of the Renaissance. Provenance: Private Collection, Palm Beach

LÉVY-DHURMER LUCIEN (1865 - 1953). Justice. Signed lower right. One of the greatest representatives of the most dreamlike, dreamy and mysterious aesthetics of international Symbolism, Lucien Lèvy-Dhurmer engages in this work with an allegorical subject, which only apparently could be traced back to an academic type theme, linked to pure form and classical symbology: the artist from Algiers expresses the ideal of ""Justice"" by linking it to mean more depth and more current for the time. The absence of the sword of the sanction in advantage of the balance of equity and of the book symbolizing the strength of the law, the rising sun in the background and the possible dating of the work on a technical basis around the year 1906, can trace the allegory back to the end of the famous process against Alfred Dreyfus, rehabilitated in that year. The image of Justice thus becomes, in its contextualization, a symbol of humanity capable of defeating any abuse and prevarication.. Cm 56,60 x 71,50.

The exhibition was well received and revealed his skill with the medium of pastel and his talent as a portraitist. Pastel had more dramatic effects than oils, allowing for tonal shading and subtle effects, as exemplified in the present work.
