EDMUND LEWANDOWSKI (1914-1998) EXHIBITED OIL MOMA 1951

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Edmund D. Lewandowski (1914-1998) Christmas Tree 1950 The abstracted, cubist influence study of an industrial refinery 'Christmas Tree,' or wellhead assembly, portrays the gauges, hand-wheel valves, cross-tees and stacked, flanged cylinders of an oilfield valve and gauge configuration. The work is signed and dated in black pigment lower left front, and is a perfect example of what the artist saw as, ''the beauty of machinery and industrial processes.'' A wellhead Christmas Tree controls the flow of oil or gas from a well or other source. Its nickname comes from its appearance: a tall, branching structure with multiple apparatus sticking out at different angles, somewhat resembling a decorated Christmas tree. Other industries employ the slang ''Christmas Tree'' metaphorically for any equipment set-up that bristles with lots of attachments, levers, or controls. This widely exhibited work, never-before-seen at auction, was shown at t 16th Annual Wisconsin Salon of Art in 1960, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1951, and the Chicago Art Institute's 60th Annual Exhibition of American Art in 1951. It was pictured in the October 1950 issue of Art Digest, and later exhibited at the Downtown Gallery in New York City. It's also pictured in Abstract Painting and Sculpture in America by Andrew Carduff Ritchie, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1951, entry number 57 illustrated on page 89. Canvas measures 40 x 22 with a framed size of 46.75 x 28.5 inches. Edmund D. Lewandowski (1914-1998) Transfer Station 1986 The precisionist vignette from a petroleum processing complex is signed and dated lower right, the title is found on labels verso from H.V. Allison Galleries and Keogh & Riehlman in New York. This work appeared in the exhibition Edmund Lewandowski Fifty Years of Painting at H.V. Allison Galleries and the Greenville County Museum of Art, 1990. Edmund D. Lewandowski was a WPA muralist best known for his highly detailed depictions of industrial scenes, machines and urban architecture, .''as representative of our culture as temples and sculpture were of the Greek.'' he once said. There are interesting similarities between this composition and the Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) Bauhaus kinetic sculpture titled Light Prop for an Electric Stage from 1930. The vertical rectangle, the perforated metal, the tubular framework, the angles and even the light fixture are themes of Moholy-Nagy's sculpture. The intersecting angles in Lewandowski's composition are also reminiscent of Moholy-Nagy's Telephone Pictures from the early 1920s when he was an instructor at the Bauhaus school of art, architecture, and design. Edmund Lewandowski attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, a school that, similar to the Bauhaus, valued craftsmanship and technical skill in art with an affinity for structured, machine-inspired aesthetics for modern society. He almost certainly would have known Moholy-Nagy's important constructivist sculpture. Renewed interest in the Bauhaus School explains the replica Light-Space Modulator from 1970 pictured here courtesy of Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin. Photograph: Fotostudio Bartsch Bauhaus. Edmund Lewandowski (1914-1998), Charleston Marina, 1988

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Edmund Lewandowski (1914-1998) Charleston Marina 1988 Watercolor on paper, 17" tall x 25" long Signed and dated lower right: Edmund Lewandowski 1988 Provenance: H. V. Allison Gallery, c. 1995; private collection, Bedford, New York Exhibited: Flint Institute of Arts, Michigan (and traveling), Edmund Lewandowski: Precisionism and Beyond, September 2010-December 2011 (catalogue, 24, no. 45 [illustrated]). Edmund Lewandowski was born in 1914 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and studied at the Layton School of Art from 1931 to 1934. While Lewandowski painted murals for the Federal Art Project during the 1930s and taught at various art institutions throughout his career in the Midwest and South, his art was always his primary focus. Soon after his graduation, in 1936, Lewandowski was asked to join the Downtown Gallery, run by the modern art dealer Edith Halpert. During his tenure with the Downtown Gallery, he became affiliated with the Precisionist school and was strongly influenced by his fellow Precisionist Charles Sheeler. Precisionism was a uniquely American style. The use of watercolors by the artists of this school was Ðantithetical to the traditional conceptions of the mediums purposes inasmuch as the anti-atmospheric, flat, planar surfaces, hard edges, and graphic control that define the style run counter to the notions of vitality, freedom, light, and movement consistently attached to watercolor production.Ó This new approach to an old medium allowed Lewandowski and other artists in the school, like Ralston Crawford, Charles Demuth, and Sheeler, to focus on subjects that were new and to display modern technology, machinery, and industrial subjects. Charleston Marina is an excellent example of Lewandowskis Precisionist style and his affinity for painting marine vessels. Its hard edges and quasi-abstraction transform the recognizable, three-dimensional forms of the boats into two-dimensional bands of color. This reduction of space and the cropped view make the boats appear to be a single, continuous object, and differentiating between their large hulls and decks becomes difficult. Lewandowski painted the scene using flat, geometric blocks of whites, blues, and browns that are only interrupted by small flashes of color, like the red life preserver or the orange cords. Lewandowski exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1938 to 1949, Carnegie Institute from 1940 to 1946, Corcoran Gallery biennials from 1947 to 1957, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1940, 1942, and 1944, Brooklyn Museum from 1939 to 1942, Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors from 1938 to 1942, Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1943, Milwaukee Art Institute in 1938 and 1940, and at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He was a member of the Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors, Polish-American Artists, Chicago Fine Art Club, California Watercolor Society, and the Wisconsin Federal Artists. His works can be found at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; University of Wisconsin and Milwaukee Institute of Art, Wisconsin.
