    Est: Kč100,000 - Kč120,000

Three Men and a Girl in a Hat (Illustration), 1978, ink drawing on paper, colored, signed and dated upper left Kamil Lhotak 78, on the reverse stamps with the text “stabilizace” and number 2849/3, pencil notation number 10, dimensions within mat window 18.4 × 22.8 cm, mounted in original frame, matted and glazed, overall dimensions with frame 31 × 26.5 cm. The work is registered in the catalogue of the Friends of Kamil Lhotak Association under number 1978 - IL 2849/3 - 10. Provenance: Originally purchased by MUDr. Frantisek Dedek directly from the artist Kamil Lhotak. The authenticity of the work has been consulted and confirmed by SPKL; certificate included. Expert Opinion: PhDr. Rea Michalova, Ph.D. From the report: The presented work, “Girl in a Hat and Three Men”, is an original, high-quality piece characterized by strong figurative types, by Kamil Lhotak, an unmistakable artistic personality of the twentieth century, whose work and influence have been described as a “fiery mark in the wide spectrum of creative individualities” (citation from F. Dvorak). The work represents a visually strong example of Lhotak’s illustration art, in which the artist excelled (creating visual accompaniments for more than 450 books). His artistic talent, with drawing as the primary basis for compositional layout and execution, made him almost ideally suited for this activity. Already in his first authorial book, “Na suchu a ve vzduchu”, he created a sort of “sample book” of his most characteristic motifs, including in terms of drawing style. This typical drawing style of Lhotak’s illustrations is perfectly reflected in the work under consideration. L. H. Augustin convincingly wrote that Kamil Lhotak was, by his entire creative nature, primarily a draftsman. Drawing, for him since youth, was a personal mode of thinking, into which he poured his everyday experiences, reading, and dreams of the world. In this work, Lhotak almost stenographically, perfectly in the rhythm of his moving hand, captured the likenesses of three men, while, from a distance and with detachment—accentuated by the subdued color palette—the profile of a woman in a hat observes them, corresponding to Lhotak’s favored figurative type. All faces depicted are a representative example of the artist’s portraiture skill, a genre within Lhotak’s oeuvre that still awaits full recognition.

    Est: Kč550,000 - Kč700,000

Duncan in the Storm, 1980, oil on canvas mounted on hardboard, signed and dated lower left “Kamil Lhotak 1980”, painting dimensions 15.5 × 22.5 cm, presented in the original frame, mounted, glazed; overall framed dimensions 45.5 × 52.5 cm. The painting is recorded in the catalogue raisonne of works by Kamil Lhotak under number 1980/11. Provenance: The work was originally purchased by MUDr. Frantisek Dedek directly from the painter Kamil Lhotak. Authenticity of the work has been consulted and confirmed by SPKL: Certificate of Origin of the painting by Kamil Lhotak enclosed. Expert opinion: PhDr. Rea Michalova, Ph.D. Excerpt from the expert report: The assessed painting Duncan in the Storm is an authentic, highly accomplished intimate work by Kamil Lhotak, a classic of Czech modern painting par excellence, undoubtedly the most famous member of Group 42 and, as is often written, a painter of boyish dreams: a romantic observer of the early era of modern technology and a true “poet” of contemporary civilization. The painting is dated 1980, a period that can be characterized as the mature phase of the artist’s consolidation of his “classical” themes. The year 1980 was also successful for the artist in terms of recognition: he received the Herder Prize in Vienna, awarded to the most significant figures of European culture, becoming the first Czechoslovak painter and one of the few visual artists to receive this honour. Duncan in the Storm is a beautifully and richly painted work that reflects Lhotak’s unique poetic vision, drawing in part on the fascination with distant voyages, ships and sailors, the sea, and exoticism. The intimate format of the work evokes comparison with so-called “Kabinettstücke” (cabinet pieces), small pictorial jewels of the 16th to 19th centuries, such as those created in Czech art by Norbert Grund or August Piepenhagen. The painting evokes an unmistakable romantic atmosphere, a temporal world perceived differently by the artist. In this work, the painter expresses his admiration for early modern technology. The confident depiction of a vessel of the Duncan class, a class of so-called pre-dreadnought battleships of the Royal Navy serving between 1903 and 1917, demonstrates Lhotak’s masterful command of maritime historical detail from the early twentieth century. It is noted that six ships of this class were built in total; one was lost in service, while others were deployed in the First World War, two of them being sunk. The remaining three were scrapped in the early 1920s. Lhotak here, with his unmistakable poetic sensibility, brings to life a story from a distant past that has long disappeared in the wake of rapid development. The red-highlighted smoking funnel of the ship is a brilliant colour accent drawing the viewer’s attention within the surrounding expanse of azure and deep blue tones. The darkened sky begins to break apart, as if the painter were visually echoing the Latin saying Fluctuat nec mergitur — “She is tossed by the waves but does not sink.”

    KAMIL LHOTÁK 1912 - 1990 - FAMILY ON A TRIP

    Est: -

With its masterful use of color and its sense of the era, this family portrait ranks among Lhoták’s works of magical realism. The perfectly balanced swaths of color make an immediate impression with their sheer richness and intensity. The composition features fateful symbols—a bicycle, a car, a boulder of memories, and a red ball—which surround the family gathering. The harmonious flow of events is interrupted by the long, fixed gaze of an intriguing young girl in a sailor dress. On the back of the painting, we find Lhoták’s inscription: “Owner: Mrs. Anna Endrštová, Prague-Liboc, Libocká 46.” Anička was the artist’s fateful companion and muse; he had sketched her in his notebook as a boy, and then their paths diverged. When he met her again, he portrayed her many times—as a mature woman and as a young girl, as is the case in Family Portrait. In 1963, he created a variation on Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass featuring the voluptuous adult “femme fatale” Anička. In Family Portrait, however, he painted Anička at the age of 14, as the love of his childhood. Anna suffered from a physical disability; part of her left hand was missing. Kamil Lhoták had suffered from polio, which left him with a permanent limp. He was able to empathize with women with disabilities and repeatedly captured their charm without any prejudice. Anna Endrštová brought inspiration and the support he needed for his work into his life. Published: Šteffek, L.: Kamil Lhoták: A Thousand Paintings. Prague, 2024. pp. 312–313, inventory no. 1328/38. Kamil Lhoták is one of the key figures in Czech painting of the second half of the 20th century. His landscapes are poetic representations of both a technologically advanced world and landscapes with fewer visible traces of human activity—landscapes that are new and full of contrasts. Lhoták strongly felt that the landscape painting of the old era needed to be transformed and that new approaches had to be sought—his own ways of rendering and his own vision. With their delicacy and brushwork, the “High Mountains in the Suburbs” evoke the impression of a previous century-styled landscape, yet thematically they shift into the realm of the real present. Est: -

This collection of unbound musical compositions offers a rare historical glimpse into Lhoták’s life; in the 1930s, he was considering a career as a composer. Lhoták played the piano from childhood; he was taught composition by Miroslav Ponc, and the result was about 30 short polyphonic pieces, two quartets, and one symphony titled Spring Greeting. It was written for a large orchestra and inspired by a poem by Heinrich Heine. Kamil Lhoták found his true calling in painting, which became his lifelong passion, though he loved classical music throughout his life. The collection includes Opus 2–6; the pages are worn, with some torn or with torn edges. It contains the composer’s corrections, annotations, and drafts. Provenance: Originally purchased by MUDr. Frantisek Dedek directly from the artist Kamil Lhotak. The authenticity of the work has been consulted and confirmed by SPKL; certificate included. Expert Opinion: PhDr. Rea Michalova, Ph.D. From the report: The presented work, “Landscape with a Lion and Airplanes”, is an original, masterfully drawn, beautiful magical-realist piece by Kamil Lhotak, an unmistakable artistic personality of the twentieth century, whose work and influence have been described as a “fiery mark in the wide spectrum of creative individualities” (citation from F. Dvorak). The work is artistically very valuable, remarkable for its visual “narrative richness” and conceptual sophistication, in which meticulous drawing is combined with the spontaneity of free brushwork. L. H. Augustin convincingly wrote that Kamil Lhotak was, by his entire creative nature, primarily a draftsman. Drawing, for him since youth, was a personal mode of thinking, into which he poured his everyday experiences, reading, and dreams of the world. “Landscape with a Lion and Airplanes” is highly characteristic in both expression and subject matter, from Lhotak’s mature period, when he skillfully explored his characteristic themes. Yet, as this drawing demonstrates, he always had something to surprise us. Here, Lhotak almost surrealistically combines two worlds: the world of modern aviation, which he loved, and the world of wild fauna, presented with satirical emphasis. The “flight” of gliders in contrast to the majestic lion, crowned with a witch’s hat, achieves a completely surreal effect. We are presented with a work in which one can delightfully “read” and experience its inventive narrative and visual rhythm, never falling into dull schematics.

Kamil Lhoták's early work represents an important milestone in the artist's development. Barely half of his earliest works from 1937 and 1938 have survived. The year 1939, when Lhoták's focus shifted from studying law to artistic creation, was a fruitful one for him, and he actively improved his painting technique. The year 1939 was also a turning point due to an exhibition at the Beaufort Gallery, where members of the Umělecká beseda (Artistic Society) took notice of Lhoták's work. Contemporary critics praised Lhoták's original range of themes and concepts. Otakar Mrkvička, a respected critic, said that even he would choose something here for the walls of his apartment, "and we professionals are not easily impressed." Kamil Lhoták was subsequently invited to exhibit at the Umělecká beseda. This rare work from Kamil Lhoták's early career comes from the collection of Czech artist Ivan Steiger, where it remained for several decades. The central motif is the pinnacle of Lhoták's beloved cycling - the Tour de France. The motif of bicycles and cyclists first appeared in 1939 and was subsequently repeated periodically. Enchanted by exotic palm trees and the sea horizon, he painted a peloton of cyclists on the French Riviera with a few confident strokes and recorded the last Tour de France for the next seven years, when the war put an end to this cycling festival. Half-empty landscapes in which a minimum of objects are set are among the typical examples of Lhoták's work. The artist works with a broader minimalist surface and optical contrast with the object he has inserted into it. In the 1960s he begins to work more with the horizon - the foreground of the landscape. At the beginning of the 1960s, his conception of landscape undergoes a fundamental change. This new approach, represented by the concept of Green Ireland, where he juxtaposes two large, colour-contrasting areas, is subsequently described by Prof. František Dvořák and the professional public as a completely innovative conception of the seemingly already exhausted topic of landscape design. He also produces a large number of free ink drawings and watercolours. • KAMIL LHOTÁK 1912 - 1990 - THE GREAT TARGET
    Dec. 04, 2024

    KAMIL LHOTÁK 1912 - 1990 - THE GREAT TARGET

    Est: -

From the expert opinion of Ing. Libor Šteffek, MBA: "The assessed work, The Great Target, was presented at the exhibition of Kamil Lhoták at the Gallery of the Czechoslovak Writer in Prague in 1966, exhibited under number 21. Given the authenticity of the conception, the sovereignty of the painting's execution, the excellent provenance and the clearly documented history of the painting, it can be stated that it is a magnificent, extremely representative and highly collectible work, which occupies one of the leading places in the artist's lifetime work. The offered work is also the largest painting of the artist with the motif of a target that did not end up in state galleries. The work is also registered in the List of Kamil Lhoták's paintings, which the artist himself maintained, under the number 1294/4. This high-quality work was created in the second half of the 1960s, when the symbol of the target in various forms was one of the artist's most typical motifs. After his entry into the world of painting in the 1930s, Kamil Lhoták gained complete confidence in his conception and means of expression within a few years, and by the beginning of the 1940s he was already a comprehensively equipped artist who transferred his subjects onto canvas with immediacy. At the same time, he concentrates on capturing motifs close to his heart during this period, so that 1940 and 1941 become the peak years of this phase of his work, accompanied by his signature initials KL, when the artist's works are created without major corrections by environmental influences. After the formation of Group 42, Kamil Lhoták entered the circle of like-minded artists whose motto was to depict the city and "the world we live in". Kamil Lhoták's works began to gradually turn away from the motifs of the city to the landscape in the early 1950s. It is not, however, an idealised landscape, but on the contrary a landscape in which man and his influence always play an essential role. At the beginning of the 1960s, there is a fundamental change in his conception of landscape. This new approach, represented by the concept of Green Ireland, which juxtaposes two large, colour-contrasting areas, is subsequently described by Prof. František Dvořák and the professional public as a completely innovative conception of the seemingly already exhausted topic of landscape design. At the same time, new motifs enter his work and his works acquire a new dynamism. Thus, Lhoták presents us with, for example, the motif of a wire eagle, a desert machine or a target. The motif first appears in his painting in 1964 and, after the culmination of the inclusion of this motif between 1965 and 1967, it remained there until the early 1970s. Lhoták presents his targets in various forms. In some cases, the painter incorporated them as one of the sub-artifacts in his work, but mostly they play the main role and draw the viewer's attention to them. Such is the case in this work, where the painter places a visually and coloristically very distinctive target in the foreground, while at the same time placing it somewhere in the open landscape, into which he gives us a glimpse on both sides of the target itself. In this way, he links the solitariness of the main object with his conception of landscape, which he came up with in the 1960s. At the same time, this work can also be described as one example of the painter's reaction to the pervasive influence of Op Art in Czechoslovakia at the time. However, Lhoták's work impresses not only with this interconnection of thought, but also with its pure artistry, extraordinary lightness and sovereignty of painting execution. After it was painted, the painting The Great Target hung in a place of honour in Lhoták's apartment and was highly valued by the painter. For years he refused many offers to sell it and sold it only at the end of his life in 1989. The painting then spent the next 35 years in the collection of its current owner. The motif of the target, as one of the characteristic features of Kamil Lhoták's work, is represented in many gallery and private collections. Among the most important representatives here we can include the works The Big Target 2 (1281/39, 1965) or The Big Target (1304/14, 1966), located in the Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové and the Benedikt Rejt Gallery in Louny, respectively. Among the most important works in private collections are the Target (1319/29, 1966) and the iconic Red Target (1375/38, 1967)." Published: Šteffek, L.: Kamil Lhoták A Thousand Paintings. In the inventory of the works of Libor Steffek G 273 | framed under glass Lot description This graphic by Kamil Lhotak from 1957 presents a scene with a characteristic motif of the artist's work - fascination with technology and the world of modern transport. Lhotak, as a prominent representative of post-war Czech fine art, often depicted machines, motorcycles, airplanes and other symbols of progress that connect the industrial and romantic worlds. The composition of this work impresses with its simplicity and calm atmosphere, which is supported by a subtle figurative element in the background. The "Tricycle" graphic is a nostalgic look at a time when technology was still seen as fascinating and inspiring.

The painting is registered in the Kamil Lhoták Catalogue Raisonné under the no. 672/94. Provenance: Umělecka beseda, Prague, September 1945 since then, Private Collection, Czech Republic Kamil Lhoták was undoubtedly one of the foremost representatives of Czech 20th-century art. Lhoták’s oeuvre was shaped by his specific circumstances and possibly his complicated family relationships also. Early in his childhood his mother encouraged him to attend art exhibitions and he also became fascinated with the phenomenon of motoring. After completing secondary education, he enrolled at the Law Faculty in accordance with his mother’s wishes and graduated without having any great interest in the subject. He gave solo exhibitions of his art works from 1939 and soon after helped found the Group 42 art association together with Jiří Kolář, Bohumír Matal, Jan Kotík and Ladislav Zívr. Soon after it was formed Group 42 organized an important joint exhibition in 1943 that established Kamil Lhoták as a key figure of the Czech art scene. https://www.gvuo.cz/en/top-100/kamil-lhotak-on-the-bank_td75

    KAMIL LHOTÁK 1912 - 1990 - BLUE AUTOMOBILE

    Est: -

Blue Car is one of the prints where the machine as a sophisticated symbol plays a central role in Kamil Lhoták's art world. Lithography attracted him with its artistic essence and the possibility of translating all the details into the final work. The Blue Car represents a manuscript example of the translation of drawing into graphics. The red and white cone is perhaps a hint of a race, the stagecoach is also positioned similarly to the race, but the car is empty. Lhoták's name has become synonymous with the milieu of modern civilization and its attributes, seen with admiration, poetic fascination and a certain amount of romantic nostalgia. The work is listed in the monograph Kamil Lhoták - Graphic Works in the Context of Other Works under catalogue number G 395. Newly framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. The fragments of reality that Lhoták captures are dreamlike brief glimpses of a unique atmosphere. A girl in a red coat with a bewitching uncompromising gaze of a femme fatale became the central motif of the poster for the last exhibition during the author's lifetime - in 1989 at the Fronta gallery. Old vehicles, motorized tricycles and other achievements of the technical revolution were frequent themes in Kamil Lhoták's work. He loved Jules Verne and his time, so of course beautiful elegant women with hats got into the offered composition. The fascination with civilization and the modern world is intertwined throughout Lhoták's work, as he himself adds: "I have always been interested in the landscape in which nature meets civilization, the artificial landscape in which man intervenes. What is exciting for me is the tension that arises between the originality of the land and the human touch, especially the human-technology touch." The entire period of the turn of the 1960s and 1970s is a period of Lhoták's continuing high work activity, when he simultaneously illustrated book publications and at the same time managed to paint approximately 50 pictures a year. He also devoted himself to drawing and graphics. Cubes, pyramids, cones and even zebras with distinctive stripes are Lhoták's reaction to the aesthetic principles of op-art, which he reflected in his paintings and in a non-violent form settled them into a poetic composition as if they had always been there. Work consulted with Libor Šteffek and assigned in Lhoták's list of paintings to the number 1528/41. Technique: oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: sign. lower left: Kamil Lhoták 1970

Kamil Lhoták is one of the key personalities of Czech painting of the second half of the 20th century. His work reflecting technical miracles is a logical outcome of artistic development. The fascination with civilization and the modern world is intertwined throughout Lhoták's work, as he himself adds: "I have always been interested in the landscape in which nature meets civilization, the artificial landscape in which man intervenes. What is exciting for me is the tension that arises between the originality of the earth and the human touch, especially the human-technology touch." Lhoták's work often acts as a direct contact between man and art, which reflects his life, elements close to him and speaks to him in a current language , which the civilization speaks fluently at the given moment. KAMIL LHOTÁK 1912 - 1990 - A DESERT MACHINE

    Est: -

Lhoták's name has become synonymous with the environment of modern civilisation and its attributes, seen with admiration, poetic interest and a certain amount of romantic nostalgia. However, it is not only about the author's distinct range of themes, his relationship to the neglected, romantic periphery and the most significant carriers of technical civilisation, machines and people, but above all about the poetic atmosphere of his paintings. The work on offer dates from 1966, when the artist exhibited his graphic work from previous years in Hradec Králové in April. In that year it was a single graphic work, very important for Lhoták, as it became one of his symbolic themes in the future - The Desert Machine. The object in the shape of an hourglass appears in this print for the first time in Lhoták's work, in a red and blue combination. This is print 103/150. The work is printed on the title page of Kamil Lhoták's book. The graphic work in the context of his other work and reproduced here on page 289.
