Wang Dongyuan (February 13, 1898 - April 8, 1995), originally named Xiu Yong, was a native of Quanjiao, Anhui Province, with ancestral roots in Huizhou. He was a prominent political and military figure during the Republic of China period and served as a Lieutenant General in the National Revolutionary Army of the Kuomintang. He participated in military campaigns against the Red Army and held several important positions, including Chairman of the Hubei Provincial Government and Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Government. In 1949, he followed the Nationalist government to Taiwan. After relocating, he served as the so-called “Ambassador to South Korea” for the Taiwan authorities from 1951 to 1961. In 1970, he became a policy advisor to the Office of the Taiwan leader. In 1971, he moved to the United States, where he later settled. He authored a book titled A Brief Account of a Floating Life. He passed away in Los Angeles in 1995 at the age of 97. ARTIST BIO:Li Xiong-Cai (1910 - 2001) was born in Gaoyao of Guangdong province in. His father, Li Junting, was good at Chinese calligraphy and painting and excelled in the art of rubbing making. He supported his family by mounting paintings and rubbings for others. Li Xiong-Cai had therefore received a basic training in art from his father since childhood. At the age of thirteen, Li studied in the Zhaoxing Middle School where he started to learn Chinese painting from his school teacher, Chen Jian. Chen was a favored student of the well-known Guangong painter, Ju Lian. At the age of sixteen, Li got acquainted with Gao Jianfu, the founder of the `Lingnan School' of painting. Gao gave a very high appraisal of his artistic talent. A year later, Li followed Gao to Guangzhou and became a student of the Gao's art school, the Chunshui Art Studio. He not only studied Chinese painting in school, but also received other training in art. It was during this period that he built up a very good foundation in the technique of sketching. Li has presented a number of one-man exhibitions and the most recent one was held in Hong Kong in 1982. During these few decades, he has produced thousands of sketches and creative paintings. Many paintings are huge in size, varying from a few metres to over ten metres long. Since 1949, Li has taught at the Huanan Arts Institute, Zhongnan Art Academy and the Guangzhou Institute of Fine Arts. He was the Professor and Deputy Director of the Guangzhou Institute of Fine Arts. Guan Shanyue (1912-2000) was formally known as Zepei Guan. He was born in the City of Yangjiang in Guangdong Province in 1912. Guan practiced painting since he was young and later was discovered and trained by Mr. Jianfu Gao, the founder of Lingnan School. In 1939, Shanyue Guan hosted personal exhibitions in Macau, Hong Kong, and Zhanjiang. Guan also started the journey of thousands of miles to observe peoples daily life and capture natural sceneries. He traveled from Guangdong to Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Shaanxi, and other provinces and published several collections of his artworks. In 1949, Guan was invited to Ren Jian Group in Hong Kong. In addition, Guan has traveled to the Soviet Union, Poland, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and the United States to gain a deeper understanding of artworks around the world and further his art development. He has hosted many personal exhibitions and published a variety of his artworks. In 1991, Guan donated to the Chinese Artists Association to establish the Shanyue Guan Chinese Painting Fund. Li Xiongcai（1910-2002） Forest at Sunset ink and colour on paper, framed signed, dated 1936, with a dedication and 3 seals of the artist 94 x 54 cm 37 x 21¼ in. 黎雄才　松雀圖設色紙本　鏡框　一九三六年作款識：雄才。馭繁先生雅政，丙子長夏，雄才再題。鈐印：「雄才」、「黎」、「雄才」。展覽及著錄：香港會展中心，〈百川匯海 —「游藝堂」珍藏書畫展〉，二〇二一年四月十七日至二十三日，並刊於展覽圖錄，頁228-229 來源：著名學者、書畫收藏家簡又文「斑園」舊藏「游藝堂」藏註：黎雄才少負畫名，蒙高劍父賞識，入春睡畫院，並獲其資助東渡日本研習日本畫。學成歸來翌年，即一九三六年，其多幅作品參與上海萬國總會舉行之「高劍父師生畫展」，其中〈暮雲圖〉尤獲簡氏青眼，歸於斑園，本幅題贈於同時，或屬展品之一，展畢補署上款，亦或為酬答知遇而特意寫奉。簡氏另藏黎雄才同期山水〈風雨征途〉、〈寒江夜泊〉，可見其扶掖嶺南新晉畫家之用心。畫寫秋林，取仰視之姿，青松紅楓凌空交映，雙雀翩躚追逐，劃破幽謐長空。筆法少勾勒，多以墨色烘染，過渡微妙，強調柔和的光影變化，意境空靈，流露日本朦朧畫風影響痕跡。畫家三十年代作品流傳甚少，雖早歲之筆，技藝成熟，實屬難得也。參考資料：〈暮雲圖〉可參見香港蘇富比，中國書畫拍賣，一九九六年十一月，編號310 〈寒江夜泊〉可參見香港蘇富比，中國書畫拍賣，一九九六年十一月，編號319 〈風雨征途〉可參見香港蘇富比，中國書畫拍賣，一九九七年四月，編號276 FORMERLY FROM THE COLLECTION OF JIAN YOUWEN（LOTS 2566 - 2567）| 簡又文「斑園」舊藏（編號2566 - 2567）簡又文（1896-1976），字永真，號馭繁，廣東新會人。早歲畢業於廣州嶺南學堂，赴美深造。返國後先任投身教育界及政界，歷任燕京大學教授、廣州市教育局長、立法委員等職，曾從戎，效力西北軍，擔任馮玉祥軍中前敵政治部中將主任。亦創辦多份雜誌，對推動文藝創作、歷史考証及鼓吹抗日，貢獻良多。政局變易，他辭退所有職務，到香港定居，潛心學術研究，以專治太平天國歷史蜚聲國際。簡氏好與文藝界交往，尤嗜書畫，以廣東歷代書畫作品為蒐集目標。尤推崇高劍父倡議之「新國畫運動」，彼此相知頗深，過從密切，庋藏高氏書畫逾百，基此淵源，二高門下所出不少精品亦入其收藏。晚年將畢生搜集的廣東書畫珍藏轉讓香港中文大學文物館。

Li Xiong Cai (May 15, 1910 – December 19, 2001) was born in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, with ancestral roots in Gaoyao, Guangdong. He graduated from the Guangzhou Lie Feng Art School and was a prominent figure in contemporary Chinese traditional painting and art education, representing the Lingnan School of Painting. In 1926, Li studied under Gao Jianfu and, the following year, joined the Chunshui Academy of Painting. In 1932, he went to Japan to study at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. After returning to China, he taught at various universities, eventually serving as a professor and vice president of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He was also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Li was known for his large-scale landscape paintings and was skilled in painting flowers, birds, and insects. His works were noted for their grandiose and distinctive style. He revolutionized traditional landscape painting by altering the conventional half-face treatment of color and using a gradual shading technique. His style became known as "Li's Landscape Painting."
