It features the whimsical image of rugby players competing in their colourful outfits for the bottle of Bec Kina. Michel Liebeaux (1881-1923), better known as Mich, was a poster artist who was active in the early twentieth century. Although his career was short, he produced a number of well-known French posters in the area of bicycles and automobiles. He was also an illustrator for the premier French auto-racing paper, L'Auto. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster has been archivally mounted, linen-backed, and is in excellent condition. Unfortunately, his cycling career ended early due to the onset of World War I; he was killed in combat at the tender age of 29. Of this namesake bicycle brand, though, hardly any information exists. Elleaume, Paris DESCRIPTION: Rending a France-shaped hole into the emerald backdrop, this multi-headed cyclist makes an immediate impression for Alcyon bicycles. And the left-hand text sums everything up rather nicely: The face of the winner changes, but his bicycle is always an Alcyonshort, sweet, and to the point. Michs evenhanded cockiness is, indeed, rather accurate as Alcyon remained the dominant bike in the Tour de France from 1909 until 1912, at which point Peugeot regained the upper hand until the outbreak of World War I. Though 1909s champion François Faber (1887-1915; a Luxembourger cyclist, he was the first foreigner to win the Tour de France and his record of winning five consecutive stages still stands) and the victor from 1910, Octave Lapize (1887-1917; Lapize also won a bronze medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics in the mens 100 kilometer race) get mentioned, its Cyprien Gustave Garrigou (1884-1963), the 1911 winner who gets the only face time in the poster. One of the best professional racing cyclists of his era, Garrigou rode in the Tour de France a total of eight times, pedaling through 117 stageswinning eightand coming in the Top Ten ninety-six times and finishing sixty-five times in the First Five.
