A FINE PAIR OF 19TH CENTURY FRENCH AESTHETIC MOVEMENT BRONZE VASE Attributed to Edouard Lievre (1828-1886), possibly cast at the Barbedienne Foundry, bearing H P stamp to base, with beautifully inlaid silver motifs, over a relief decorated body of Japanese inspiration. 13 cm x 10 cm.

Il est donc probable que la production de cette armoire-vitrine soit antérieure à l'achat par Pannier des esquisses de Lièvre et de leurs droits de reproduction en 1890. Hypothèse corroborée par l'existence de la vitrine-armoire de même description vendue à partir de la collection d'Edouard Lièvre en 1887 Note : Cette vitrine-armoire fait partie d'un ensemble de meubles conçus par Édouard Lièvre dans les années 1870 dans le style sino-japonais. Son héritage est dispersé après sa mort lors de deux ventes à l'Hôtel Drouot en mars 1887 et en février 1890. Un meuble similaire au nôtre y a été vendu en mars 1887 (catalogue des Meubles d'Art de la Succession de feu M. Édouard Lièvre, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 21-24 mars 1887.) Les témoignages de la presse évoquent la très grande valeur des lots présentés aux enchères : «on s'écrasait à la salle 8, où avait lieu la vente d'Edouard Lièvre». Les frères Pannier en sont les principaux acquéreurs. Sous le lot n°57, le meuble était décrit tel quel : Très beau meuble à étagères formant vitrine au centre, tout en palissandre des îles avec miroirs biseautés et richement décoré de bronzes ciselés et dorés. Deux dragons furieux se détachent dans le fond. Les côtés sont ornés de masques de chimères sur fond d'arabesques ajourées, et le fronton est soutenu par un diadème avec des arabesques de fleurs lobées et des trèfles finement sculptés. The sides each feature two openwork plaques depicting a Fô dog's maw in foliate foliage The base features a long drawer carved with gilded ornaments in the form of Greciques surmounting a frieze of gadroons, flanked by dragons. Brazilian rosewood, chased and gilded bronze ornamentation Circa 1875 H. 205.5 cm - W. 130 cm - D. 59 cm Condition report : Missing pediment Showcase door: several missing moldings in top, left and right corners, missing keyhole. Lower part of central body: two rods to be reattached, some missing, part joining body and base missing Base: several gadroons missing from front and sides Right and left sides: bumps and cracks, significant missing veneers in the lower rounding of the body. Rear: several missing veneers, particularly in the lower section On the whole piece: minor scratches, bumps and wear None of the elements are stamped L'Escalier de Cristal. It is therefore likely that the production of this cabinet predates Pannier's purchase of Lièvre's sketches and their reproduction rights in 1890. This hypothesis is corroborated by the existence of the vitrine-armoire of the same description sold from Edouard Lièvre's collection in 1887. Note: This vitrine-armoire is part of a set of furniture designed by Edouard Lièvre in the 1870s in the Sino-Japanese style. His estate was dispersed after his death at two sales at Hôtel Drouot in March 1887 and February 1890. The pierced foliate decoration to the lower section of the oil lamp is reminiscent of the layered decoration found on the Persian Vase made by Barbedienne after a design by Edouard Lièvre and exhibited in the Paris 1878 Universal Exhibition. Große Jardinière mit orientalischem Dekor, ausgeführt von dem Bronzekünstler Georges Émile Henri Servant (1828-um 1890). Bronze, vergoldet, polychromes Cloisonné-Email und Onyx. Aufbau in Form eines Rechteckkastens, die Wandungen in grün schimmerndem Speckstein über mehrfach profilierter Rahmung mit kräftigen, an den Ecken hochziehenden Kanteneinfassungen, die zum Teil durchbrochen gearbeitet sind, dekoriert mit Wolkenbankmotiven und mit Fußabschlüssen in Form von Fischköpfen. Sämtliche Montierungen in Bronze, feuervergoldet. An den Schmalseiten applizierte eckabgerundete Reliefplatten mit Drachenmotiven. Besonders detailreich die großen querrechteckigen Auflegeplatten mit Zellschmelzemaildekor nach chinesischen Motiven. Jeweils dunkelblaugrundige Rahmung mit Dreipassmotiven, die Mittelkartusche hellbeigegrundig, darauf ein türkises Mittelfeld mit rotem Zentralmotiv. Insgesamt reicher Blüten- und Blattdekor, ebenfalls im chinesischen Stil, Inneneinsatz in Kupfer. Anmerkung: Servant wurde im Jahre 1874 zum Ritter der Ehrenlegion ernannt. Auf der Weltausstellung 1878 stellte Servant, der damals Berichterstatter und Mitglied der Jury der Bronzekunstklasse war, Vasen und Kleinmöbel aus Bronze aus, die wiederum allgemeine Bewunderung hervorriefen. Höhe: 169 cm. Breite: 115 cm. Tiefe: 53,5 cm. Das Kabinett gearbeitet in Palisander mit vergoldeten Bronzen, Morello-Marmor-Säulen aus Belgien und Glas. Zwei verglaste übereinandergeschichtete Körper mit vorgesetzten Zwillingssäulen, diese kanneliert und aus rot-weiß geädertem Marmor gebildet und auf vergoldeten ziselierten Maskaronvasen ruhend, mit korinthischen Kapitellen und partiell durch Festons dekorierten Architraven. Anmerkung: Edouard Lièvre entwarf nach langer künstlerischer Tätigkeit Möbel, die in herausragender Qualität von seinen Mitarbeitern in seinen Pariser Werkstätten gefertigt wurden. Seine Möbel waren ein Begriff für höchstes künstlerisches Können in Paris. Die Komposition seiner Luxusmöbel wurden als stärkste kreative Leistungen des 19. Jahrhunderts angesehen. Vorliegendes Möbel ist ein Beispiel seiner Umsetzung von Gedanken und Architektur der Renaissance. A French Japonisme Gilt and Silvered Bronze Wall Mirror by Edouard Lievre, circa 1880 The exquisite quality cresting is modeled as dragons, high quality mask heads and centered by a roundel above a rectangular beveled glass mirror. Measures: 23"" high x 14.5"" wide. Very good condition. Edouard Lievre was one of the most talented and prolific industrial designers of the second half of the 19th century. Trained initially as an illustrator under Thomas Couture, from 1870, Edouard was fully immersed in decorative art providing designs for manufacturers and marchand-editeurs. In the 1870's he designed a small group of furniture in ""le style japonias et chinois"" for important private clients and for editors of luxurious furniture and objects. Edouard Lievre's designs were made by the silversmith Christofle, bronzier Barbedienne, and by furniture ebeniste Paul Sormani. However, Lievre is most often associated with the marchand-editeur and retailer of haute luxe furnishing L'Escalier De Cristal. HAUT. 14,8cm - DIAM. 7,9 • 5 7/8 X 3 1/8 IN. €1,500-2,500 Dans les années 1870, Édouard Lièvre avec son frère cadet Justin va ouvrir un atelier d’où sortirent de petits objets en bronze ainsi que des meubles de style Néo-Renaissance, Japonisants ou Orientalistes. Nous savons qu’Édouard Lièvre a travaillé à plusieurs reprises avec la Maison Barbedienne, Christofle ou Sormani, sans que les modalités de ces diverses collaborations nous soient bien connues. Lors des diverses ventes de sa succession en 1887, Georges et Henri Pannier, les propriétaires de la Maison l’Escalier de Cristal, se portèrent acquéreurs de plusieurs meubles, bronzes, modèles de bronzes et dessins d’Édouard Lièvre, ce qui leur permit de créer de nombreux mobiliers ou objets d’art selon ses modèles. Un vase seul, variante, conçue pour un décor avec émaux «champlevés», publié dans Roberto Polo, «Édouard Lièvre», dans Connaissance des arts, H.S. n°228, Paris, 2004, p.25.
AN IMPORTANT LATE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH 'JAPONISME' GILT BRONZE FLOOR STANDING LAMP ATTRIBUTED TO EDOUARD LIEVRE (FRENCH, 1829-1886) the pierced reservoir decorated with scrolling flowers and foliage over the adjustable stem terminating in a triform base with dragon head decoration and dragon handles, the distinctive shade with parcel gilt decoration of a dragon, 170cm high when fully extended. The distinctive gilt decorated glass shade that comes with this exceptional lamp base is typical of Edouard Lievre's work. Very similar glass shades feature on a pair of lamp bases sold at Bonhams, London, 4 December 2008, lot 152 (£36,900). Those lamps also featured the pierced foliate decoration, and the use of stylised dragons is typical of his designs. More specifically, the mounts used at the base of this lamp are directly comparable to those used on the 'Armoire Japonisante' signed by Edouard Lièvre and today in a private collection. (D. Alcouffe, Connaissance des Arts, Edouard Lièvre, Paris, 2004, no. 228, pp. 10 and 11). The weaved ornament apparent in the present lot can also be seen on a Japonisme table by Lievre shown in the above publication (p.31).
