Richard (1901) Lindner Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1901 - d. 1978

Richard Lindner (November 11, 1901 – April 16, 1978) was a German-American painter.

Richard Lindner was born in Hamburg, Germany. His mother Mina Lindner was American and born in New York as daughter of German parents.

In 1905 the family moved to Nuremberg, where Lindner's mother was owner of a custom-fitting corset business and Richard Lindner grew up and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Arts and Crafts School), now the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. From 1924 to 1927 he lived in Munich and studied there from 1925 at the Kunstakademie. In 1927 Lindner moved to Berlin and stayed there until 1928, when he returned to Munich to become art director of a publishing firm. He remained in Munich until 1933, when he was forced to flee to Paris. Once in Paris, Lindner became politically engaged, sought contact with French artists and earned his living as a commercial artist. He was interned when World War II broke out in 1939 and later served in the French Army.

In 1941, Lindner moved to the United States and worked in New York City as an illustrator of books and magazines. There he made contact with New York artists and German emigrants such as Albert Einstein, Marlene Dietrich, and Saul Steinberg. In 1948, Lindner became an American citizen.

In 1952, Lindner started teaching at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn. In 1957 Lindner received the William and Norma Copley Foundation-Award. In 1965, he became Guest Professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany. His paintings at this time used the sexual symbolism of advertising and investigated definitions of gender roles in the media. In 1967, Lindner moved to Yale University School of Art and Architecture, New Haven.

Richard Lindner died in 1978. He was buried at Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

Richard Lindner German American, (1901-1978) Fun City NYC lithograph pencil signed lower right, numbered 125/175. Discoloration/staining lower margin and verso. Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in 1901 at Hamburg, Germany, Richard Lindner became a fine-art painter of hard-edge abstract figures, a fashion illustrator and art educator. His signature figural works reflect his perception of the un-fulfillment of pop culture and are shown in surreal settings with garish bright colors, flat forms and faces with severe expressions. Among them are streetwalkers, military personnel, mannequins and circus performers---all looking mechanical and unhappy. Richard Lindner spent his childhood in Nuremberg and studied there at the Kunstgewerbeschule. From 1924 to 1927 he lived in Munich where he studied from 1925 at the Kunstakademie. He moved to Berlin and stayed there until 1928 and then returned to Munich to become art director of a publishing firm. Richard Lindner, American/German 1901-1978, Fun City, New York

    Est: $200 - $400

Richard Lindner American/German, 1901-1978 Fun City, New York 1969 color lithograph 28 x 41 inches signed and numbered 56/175 published by Shorewood, NY Provenance: James T. Parker Art Trust Collection, Chicago, IL Lindner was known for his bizarrely erotic portraits which meld human figures with machine-like elements. With their bold outlines and stretches of gradient color, Lindner's figures are reminiscent of those by Fernand Léger. The artist's 1954 painting Boy with Machine was famously used by the French authors Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's as the cover of their book Anti-Oedipus (1972). "An artist must remain a child, with an interest in unimportant things," he once said. Born on November 11, 1901 in Hamburg, Germany, his family moved to the city of Nuremberg in 1905, where his mother ran a boutique corset shop. A talented musician as a youth, Lindner's interest in visual art led him to attend the Kunstakademie in Munich, where he studied from 1925 until 1927. In 1929, he became the art director at Knorr & Hirth, a large publishing house, where he worked until 1933. Being of Jewish descent, Lindner fled to Paris to avoid arrest by the Nazi regime during the mid-1930s. In 1941, he moved to New York and worked as an illustrator for numerous publications, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Fortune. By 1952, Lindner had stopped his commercial assignments in order to devote his time completely to painting. The artist died on April 16, 1978 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, among others. (REF: Artnet)

    Richard Lindner – o. T. I, 1958

    Est: -

RICHARD LINDNER (1901 Hamburg - 1978 New York City) o.T. I, 1958 Aquarell und Bleistift auf Papier. 37,5 x 24,5 cm.

Richard Lindner (German/American, 1901-1978). A color lithograph on paper titled Man's Best Friend. The work is executed in the artist's signature graphic style, featuring a stylized profile of a man with a mustache facing a greyhound. The composition utilizes fragmented geometric shapes, bold outlines, and dotted sightlines that create a structured, mechanical interaction between the two figures. This print is hand-signed R. Lindner in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 57/150 in pencil in the lower left margin. The work is characteristic of Lindner's mid-century exploration of human and animal forms through a Pop Art lens. Richard Lindner German, (1901-1978) New York Men from the Fun City Portfolio, 1971 lithograph with collotype on wove paper Pencil signed lower right, numbered 240/250 lower left. Biography from the Archives of askART: Richard Lindner was born in Hamburg, West Germany in 1901 and grew up in Nuremberg, Germany. As a boy of eleven he was abducted by a beautiful twenty-year old actress. He studied at the Hamburg School of Fine and Applied Arts in 1922 and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1924. He narrowly escaped execution as a Jewish exile in France during World War II, emigrating to the United States in 1941. He worked for more than ten years as a commercial illustrator for Vogue Magazine from 1941 to 1950. He had his first one-man show at the age of fifty-three. He taught at Pratt Institute in New York City from 1951 to 1965. Lindner's work started out being sophisticated, unique and terribly disturbing, concerned with European alienation. His later work digs deep into the American heart; it evokes the uneasy coexistence between technology and sexuality. The canvases are beautifully engineered. Their symmetry meshes perfectly, colors are metallic and people are often part machine. Lindner died in 1978. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Richard Lindner American/German, 1901-1978 Fun City, New York 1969 color lithograph 28 x 41 inches signed and numbered 56/175 published by Shorewood, NY Provenance: James T. Parker Art Trust Collection, Chicago, IL Lindner was known for his bizarrely erotic portraits which meld human figures with machine-like elements. With their bold outlines and stretches of gradient color, Lindner’s figures are reminiscent of those by Fernand Léger. The artist’s 1954 painting Boy with Machine was famously used by the French authors Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s as the cover of their book Anti-Oedipus (1972). “An artist must remain a child, with an interest in unimportant things,” he once said. Born on November 11, 1901 in Hamburg, Germany, his family moved to the city of Nuremberg in 1905, where his mother ran a boutique corset shop. A talented musician as a youth, Lindner’s interest in visual art led him to attend the Kunstakademie in Munich, where he studied from 1925 until 1927. In 1929, he became the art director at Knorr & Hirth, a large publishing house, where he worked until 1933. Being of Jewish descent, Lindner fled to Paris to avoid arrest by the Nazi regime during the mid-1930s. In 1941, he moved to New York and worked as an illustrator for numerous publications, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Fortune.
