Johannes Lingelbach 1622 Frankfurt a. M. - 1674 Amsterdam River landscape with resting peasants, in the background Fort Saint-Jean and the Château de Pierre-Scize, Lyon Signed lower centre. Oil on canvas. 89.9 x 104.2 cm. Framed. Bedeutende Provenienz – laut RKD: Auktion Veil, Amsterdam, 5. Juli 1769, Lot 24. Judging from the photograph it reminds me of the Maestro dei Mestieri (Master of the Small Trades). This artist has been identified by Thomas Kren as the young Johannes Lingelbach (see: Thomas Kren,'Jan Lingelbach in Rom' in The J.Paul Getty Museum Journal 10 (1982), p.45-62).'Thomas Kren discusses Lingelbach's early career in Rome between 1644 or 1647 and 1650, when he returned to Amsterdam to become one of the most celebrated Dutch genre painters. He builds a case for about sixteen previously mis-attributed paintings grouped around Jan Miel or the artist known as the 'Master of the Small Trades' being by the young Lingelbach. The defining work in this group is Il Ciambellaro (Galleria Nationale d'Arte Antica, Rome), which he claims demonstrates the simplified forms and flat lighting that contrast with the accurate naturalistic detail and extraordinary sensitivity to the effects of light, atmosphere and space evident in landscapes by van Laer.Among the influences on Lingelbach, according to Kren, were the mature work of Jan Miel from the late 1630's and 1640's, and the classicizing influence of Michael Sweerts, who arrived in Rome in 1646. Another seminal work of Lingelbach's early career is The Purgative Source, (Musee Fabre, Montpelier), where Kren states that the distant...mountains at the right are treated with even colouring and flat light. This treatment is certainly evident in the landscape of the present picture, which also features the wide-brimmed hats of the peasants enlivening the surface design...and the doll-like male figures mentioned by Kren.

    Est: €6,000 - €7,000

JOHANNES LINGELBACH (Germany, 1622-1674). "Alms in Rome." Oil on canvas. Relined. It presents restorations in the pictorial surface. It has a frame of the eighteenth century with faults. Measurements: 51 x 68 cm; 66 x 81 cm (frame). In this scene located in Rome, the author presents us a pictorial approximation of the daily life of a great baroque city. In the center of the scene a group of characters eat and drink, while one of them receives the food, thus showing his inability to feed himself. Behind them, another group mistreats a young man who tries to run away from them. In short, the author confronts us, through costumbrismo, with the reality of Rome. However, being the city of holiness and using the obelisk as a spatial reference, the author provides a second reading of moral character that confronts misery to power, poverty to the baroque splendor of the church. Johannes Lingelbach was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age, linked to the second generation of the group known as Bamboccianti, a group of genre painters who worked in Rome between 1625 and 1700. Johannes resided in Paris between 1642 and 1644, and later moved to Lyon, Genoa and Rome, where he collaborated with several members of the Bentvueghels, an association of Nordic artists based near the Piazza di Spagna. In June 1650 he returned to Amsterdam. He maintained friendships with artists such as Karel Dujardin, Jurriaen Ovens and Joan Huydecoper II, who lived on the Lauriergracht. It is not known with certainty who his teacher was, although his works show the influence of Philips Wouwerman, particularly in the treatment of landscape. His ability to depict genre figures was equally outstanding in the depiction of architectural and natural elements. He was frequently invited to add figures and animals to landscapes by other painters, such as Beerstraten, Meindert Hobbema and Jan van der Heyden. His study of architectural forms developed through observation of the works of Viviano Codazzi, also a member of the Bamboccianti group and recognized as a painter of architectural views. Although his forms showed a remarkable handling of light and a precise spatial arrangement, Lingelbach worked with greater freedom than Codazzi. Lingelbach followed the aesthetics of the Bamboccianti, in particular that of Il Bamboccio (Pieter van Laer), bringing an Italianate style that influenced the Nordic painters. He is one of the few Dutch artists of this group whose work is documented in detail, which has increased his relevance in the development of this pictorial style. Some of his paintings executed in Rome were once attributed to Pieter van Laer, although his authorship was later recognized, as is the case of Roman Street Scene with Card Players (National Gallery). These works reveal the influence of Caravaggio's realism and refined chiaroscuro, also present in compositions such as Figures before a locanda, with a view of the Piazza del Popolo in Rome (Royal Collection). Johannes Lingelbach was buried in the Lutheran Church of the Singel. It presents restorations in the pictorial surface. It has an 18th century frame with faults.

Müllenmeister: Meer und Land im Licht des 17. Jahrhunderts. Bd.

Dreesmann, 's Gravenhage, 1942, tome I, p. 9 A.E.D'Ailly, Zeven eeuwen Amsterdam, Deel 3, De stad en haar schoonheid, Amsterdam, 194?, mentionné p. 207 Alice I. Davies, 'Jan van Kessel (1641-1680)', Doornspijk, 1992, p.109-110, n° 3, fig. A.R. Johannes Lingelbach - attributed: Market Scene on the Quay Walls of an Italian Port City

    Est: €10,000 - €15,000

LINGELBACH, JOHANNES 1622 Frankfurt/Main - 1674 Amsterdam attributed Title: Market Scene on the Quay Walls of an Italian Port City. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 48,5 x 54,5cm. Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. The painting here is one of the special and characteristic motifs of the German artist Johann Lingelbach, who spent ten formative years in Rome from 1643. He depicts an everyday market situation in an Italian city: a lot is happening in the teeming scene. People are working, gossiping and shopping. The city dwellers go about their daily tasks. In his painting, Lingelbach creates numerous small scenes that take place simultaneously and all tell their own self-contained story. Above the many small happenings, majestic buildings loom on the horizon, lending depth and breadth to the depiction. Explanations to the Catalogue
