Linke is considered the most important Parisian cabinet-maker of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1868, at the age of 13, he began a four-year apprenticeship as a cabinet-maker, after which he worked as an assistant in Prague until 1874 and for two-and-a-half years in Vienna, where he worked in a workshop that belonged to the guild. Through the Viennese guild, Linke received his registration as a journeyman. In 1875, he returned to Bohemia, was exempted from military service, migrated to Dresden, and from there via Weimar to Hesse up to Mainz. At the end of that year, Linke left Germany and traveled to Paris, where he presumably took a job in the workshop of the German-born ebeniste Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener. From 1877 onwards, Linke worked again for his old teacher, Franz Neumann in Reichenberg, where he produced his master craftsman piece at the age of only 22. Towards the end of that year, Linke returned to Paris. Linke's main sources of inspiration were royal furniture from the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Lit.: D. Est: €8,500 - €9,000

FRANÇOIS LINKE ( Czech Republic,1855- Paris, 1946). Louis XV style table. Rosewood, gilt bronze and marble. The marble is broken and has restorations. It has flaws in the veneer. Measurements: 80 x 145 x 80 cm. Table made of palo santo wood with bronze appliqués and wooden top. The piece is attributed to François Linke (Czech Republic, 1855-1946) who was an outstanding cabinetmaker of the late 19th and early 20th century. Records show that Linke served an apprenticeship with a master cabinetmaker, named Neumann, which he completed in 1877. He was in Vienna from July 1872 to October 1873, at the time of the International Exhibition held there in 1873. Linke subsequently travelled to Prague, Budapest and Weimar before finally arriving in Paris in 1875. It is documented that he obtained employment with an unknown German cabinetmaker in Paris, and stylistic similarities, photographs and geographical proximity have led some to suggest that Emmanuel Zwiener was the most likely candidate. After a period back in his hometown, he returned once and for all to Paris in 1877. In 1878, Paris hosted the third major International Exhibition, a remarkable success for a country devastated by war only seven years earlier. Linke's fledgling workshops are known to have been active in the Faubourg St. Antoine as early as 1881; during this time, he supplied furniture for other more established manufacturers such as Jansen and Krieger. In 1889, another Universal Exhibition was held in Paris. The items he exhibited marked a transition from the historicist interpretation of the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, an interpretation that was the mainstay of his closest rivals, to something surprisingly new and vital. Together with Léon Messagé, Linke developed a new style for the 1900 Exposition that paid homage to the rococo style of Louis XV in the fluidity of its approach, but an approach fused with the lively, flowing lines of contemporary, progressive Art Nouveau.
