L.van Beethoven, Leipzig, 144 pp., 19th cen., 23 x 31 cm., tear to title page weight: 630 gr. Jacques Lipchitz (22 August [O.S. 10 August] 1891[1] – 26 May 1973[2]) was a Cubist sculptor. Lipchitz retained highly figurative and legible components in his work leading up to 1915–16, after which naturalist and descriptive elements were muted, dominated by a synthetic style of Crystal Cubism. In 1920 Lipchitz held his first solo exhibition, at Léonce Rosenberg's Galerie L'Effort Moderne in Paris. Fleeing the Nazis he moved to the US and settled in New York City and eventually Hastings-on-Hudson. Jacques Lipchitz was born Chaim Jacob Lipschitz, in a Litvak family, son of a building contractor in Druskininkai, Lithuania, then within the Russian Empire. He studied at Vilnius grammar school and Vilnius Art School. Under the influence of his father he studied engineering in 1906–1909, but soon after, supported by his mother he moved to Paris (1909) to study at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian

Wilkinson, The Sculpture of Jacques Lipchitz: A Catalogue Raisonné, Volume One, The Paris Years, 1910-1940, London: Thames and Hudson, 1996, no. 132, p. 60 (illus.). Lot Essay Jacques Lipchitz was a prominent sculptor associated with the School of Paris, a vibrant community of French and émigré artists that thrived in the first half of the 20th century. Born in Lithuania in 1891, Lipchitz settled in Paris in 1909, where he emerged as a central figure in the city’s artistic avant-garde. Alongside Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancusi, and Alexander Archipenko, Lipchitz benefited from the creative ferment of his adopted homeland, and from a fertile exchange of ideas among artists of far-reaching backgrounds and influences. Lipchitz’s small-scale relief sculptures from the 1920s reflect the period’s preoccupation with abstraction and experimentation. Bas Relief II (1921) and the following lot, Figure à la Guitare (1924), are characterized by intricate, angular compositions, which break down and reconfigure human and inanimate subjects into complex geometries. Transcending the limitations of traditional sculpture, the pair employs fragmented, faceted forms that convey both depth and dynamism - a fusion of Cubist aesthetics and a profound exploration of three-dimensional space within an otherwise two-dimensional plane. Dating to 1962 and the penultimate decade of Lipchitz's career, The Prophet (Lot 8), contrasts sharply with these earlier works. A sensitive commingling of abstraction and figural representation, the 14 1/2-inch bronze boasts organic forms and a striking interplay between negative and positive space. Suggestive of Lipchitz’s late-career engagement with spirituality and mysticism—and confirmation of his ability to adapt, evolve and innovate - the sculpture, with its sinuous lines and fractured, yet cohesive form, captures the essence of prophetic wisdom.
