LIPPI LORENZO (1606 - 1665). Saint Ursula. Literature: C. D’Afflitto, Lorenzo Lippi, 2003, p.209. The canvas, of oval format set within a rectangular field, depicts Saint Ursula in half-length view, turned slightly three-quarters to the right, holding in her left hand the Christian banner of victory — the white flag with a red cross, a constant attribute of the saint’s iconography — while her right hand, placed over her chest in a gesture of devout recollection, completes a posture of intense spiritual participation that constitutes one of the most recognizable stylistic features of the painter’s mature production. The face, framed by thick, softly curled hair and illuminated by a diffused, even light, displays that deeply devotional expression — large, slightly uplifted eyes and parted lips in an almost imperceptible movement — which critics have identified as a distinctive trait of Lippi’s female figures in his full maturity, marked by what D’Afflitto has aptly defined as the artist’s pictorial and poetic “conversion.” The saint’s attire is of extraordinary decorative richness: the dark mantle, of deep blue, opens onto a damask robe with iridescent reflections, rendered through a soft application of paint rich in tactile and luminous effects. Iconographic coherence, which requires a royal daughter to be depicted in sumptuous, princely garments, fully justifies this exuberance of drapery, which Lippi nevertheless controls with a formal discipline and clarity of design that distinguish him from contemporaries more inclined toward decorative solutions. The closest formal and chronological reference within the artist’s oeuvre is the Head of Saint John the Baptist in a private collection (cat. no. 36), datable to 1638: the facial type — with large, moist eyes, softly modelled flesh, and elaborate hair — is consistent with the present Saint Ursula as well, suggesting a dating to the fifth decade of the seventeenth century, a period in which Lippi was engaged in constructing a personal and rigorously controlled pictorial language, grounded in the recovery of sixteenth-century Florentine tradition — from Santi di Tito to Andrea del Sarto — and in a deliberate opposition to the “soft” solutions of contemporary local painting and to the Baroque innovations introduced in Florence by Cortonesque painting. The pose and expression of the figure are particularly reminiscent of Furini-inspired models widely popular in the 1630s and 1640s, to which Lippi himself occasionally adhered: the half-length saint type, with an ecstatically devout upward gaze and richly elaborated drapery, belongs to a figurative koiné widely diffused in Florentine painting of the second quarter of the century, with Giovanni Antonio Bilivert and his circle among its leading interpreters. Lippi, however, filters this legacy through his purist and normalizing program, eliminating any trace of decorative languor or excessive softness, and reducing the figure to a formal clarity and sculptural density that correspond, in pictorial terms, to the values of rationality and measure he shared — on a theoretical and moral level — with the Florentine academic circles he frequented assiduously. The tightly controlled painting technique, with luminous values constructed through gradual tonal transitions rather than strong chiaroscuro contrasts, and with that almost “paper-like” quality of the drapery noted by Baldinucci as a hallmark of his style, firmly place the work within the painter’s mature production, prior to his final phase from the 1650s onwards, when compositional simplification becomes more pronounced and the rendering of faces acquires an increasingly programmatic rigidity of line.. 56 x 72 cm.

Attribuito a Lorenzo Lippi (FIRENZE 1606 - 1665). San Sebastiano.

(Florence 1606–1665) Saint Philip baptises the Ethiopian eunuch, oil on canvas, 185 x 215 cm, unframed Provenance: Private European collection Literature: G. Cantelli, Repertorio della pittura fiorentina del Seicento, Pontedera 1983, mentioned p. 96, fig. 480 (as Lorenzo Lippi); G. Pagliarulo, Dipinti fiorentini del Seicento per la Compagnia di san Paolo di Notte, in: Paragone, no. 471, 1989, p. 60, p. 69, under note 38 (as Lorenzo Lippi); C. d’Afflitto, Lorenzo Lippi, Florence 2002, mentioned p. 44, illustrated on p. 45, p. 176, no. 9 (as Lorenzo Lippi); F. Baldassari, La pittura del Seicento a Firenze. Biografie e opere, vol. I, Florence 2009, p. 180 (as Lorenzo Lippi) inscribed on the pages of the book, in the lower right corner of the painting, are the following verses: Tanquam ovis ad occisionem ductus est, et sicut agnus coram tondente se, sine voce, sic [non] aperuit os suum. The present painting depicts the New Testament episode recounted in the Acts of the Apostles (8:26–40), in which Saint Philip baptises the Ethiopian eunuch, treasurer to the Queen of Ethiopia, after interpreting a prophetic passage from Isaiah for him. The composition captures the climactic moment of conversion: Philip, with solemn compassion, pours water over the bowed figure of the kneeling eunuch, who receives the sacrament in humble devotion. Around them unfolds a theatrical mise-en-scène typical of Florentine Seicento painting: servants and retinue in rich attire, a majestic white horse, and courtiers who bear witness to the sacred act. In the foreground, the open book alludes to Isaiah’s text, the catalyst of the eunuch’s inquiry and conversion. A pupil of Matteo Rosselli, Lippi quickly distinguished himself for his narrative clarity, compositional balance, and finely modulated colour. His career unfolded between Florence and Innsbruck, where he worked for Claudia de’ Medici (1604-1648), and later again in his native city. Lippi’s art, marked by ‘sobria eleganza’ and ‘composta chiarezza narrativa’, bridges the legacy of Rosselli with a personal idiom of lyrical grace and restrained classicism. The present canvas embodies Lippi’s religious manner: poised draperies, measured gesture, and a restrained pathos that conveys moral meaning without theatrical excess. Rather than the stark naturalism favoured by Roman Caravaggisti, Lippi pursues Florentine clarity and decorum, allowing the narrative to unfold with calm dignity. Useful comparisons can be drawn with Lippi’s Angelica and Medoro in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (inv. no. NGI.809), where the monumental pairing of protagonists and the interplay of saturated reds and golden highlights echo the pictorial language of the present work. A tighter comparison is Lorenzo Lippi’s Samson and Delilah in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (inv. no. NM 2402): the life-size figures pressed to the foreground, and even the head type and tapered hands of the baptised youth echo the young Philistine cutting Samson’s hair in Stockholm.

The association of fortune with man's ability to shape his destiny by swift, decisive action was a popular concept during the Renaissance. It derived from the classical idea of fortune being an unpredictable force which must be seized to ensure success.

To Baldinucci, we owe most of the information we have today on the artist’s life: initially trained in the arts and then apprenticed under Matteo Rosselli, this painter was autonomous and independent from around 1626. From 1630 he was a member of the Florentine Academy of Drawing: during this period, he was particularly interested in works on biblical and literary subjects. The artist’s style was influenced by his master Rosselli in terms of composition and narrative. In contrast, in the sweetness of the complexions, he was influenced by the contemporary Furini, with whom he did not share the expressiveness of the faces. Lippi spent time in Rome between 1642 and 1644 with Salvator Rosa, sharing his love of writing comic and satirical verses, but his influence on painting cannot be ruled out. The years between 1639 and 1640 were rich in commissions, particularly from the Church, which brought him great fame. These two portraits, enclosed in two fine octagonal frames, belong to a late phase of the painter’s activity: in his maturity, he deliberately tended to simplify his drawings and compositions; here, the black background gives an air of composure and seriousness, which goes hand in hand with scrupulous attention to the description of clothing and fabric details. The portrait genre is closely linked to Lippi’s success in Florence as a patron. His skills as a portraitist were also widely appreciated during his stay in Innsbruck between 1643 and 1644 when he painted portraits of various members of the Medici family.
