Luigi Loir (1845–1916) was a French painter, illustrator, and lithographer renowned for his vivid portrayals of Parisian life during the Belle Époque. Born in Goritz, Austria, to French parents serving the exiled Bourbon royal family, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma before settling in Paris in the 1860s. Loir gained acclaim for his atmospheric cityscapes, capturing the evolving urban landscape of Paris with a keen eye for light and movement. His works, often depicting bustling streets and modern infrastructure like the Métro, are celebrated for their dynamic composition and attention to detail. Beyond painting, Loir contributed to commercial art, creating posters and illustrations for brands such as LU biscuits. His contributions to art were recognized with numerous awards, including a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle and the title of Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1898. Loir's artworks are housed in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the National Gallery in Prague.

He was the son of Tancrede Loir Francois and Therese Leban, his wife, respectively valet and housekeeper of the French royal family in exile in Austria. Installed in the duchy of Parma in 1847, Luigi Loir studied at the school of Fine Arts of Parma in 1853. His first known painting is Paysage a Villiers-sur Seine (1865), painted two years after his return to Paris. He was primarily a landscape painter. He also became known for his ceiling paintings and worked with Jean Pastelot (1820-1870).He created some drawings for the biscuits brand LU and participated in the battles of Le Bourget during the Franco-Prussian War. Loir was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1898. He died in Paris in 1916.

Framed Born in Gorizia, Austria, to French parents, Luigi Loir began his training at the Parma Art Academy in 1853. After studying in Italy, he moved to Paris, where he specialised in views and scenes of the French capital. After the Paris City Council bought two of his paintings, he was officially appointed painter of the Paris boulevards soon after. Loir was particularly successful in selling his works executed in gouache. They are characterised by an excellent technique, capturing wonderful impressions of the Parisian Belle Époque with spontaneous but securely placed brushstrokes.

He was the son of Tancrede Loir Francois and Therese Leban, his wife, respectively valet and housekeeper of the French royal family in exile in Austria. Installed in the duchy of Parma in 1847, Luigi Loir studied at the school of Fine Arts of Parma in 1853. His first known painting is Paysage a Villiers-sur Seine (1865), painted two years after his return to Paris. He was primarily a landscape painter. He also became known for his ceiling paintings and worked with Jean Pastelot (1820-1870).He created some drawings for the biscuits brand LU and participated in the battles of Le Bourget during the Franco-Prussian War. Loir was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1898. He died in Paris in 1916.
