Gustave Loiseau painted "Péniche sur l’Oise" in 1900, during a period in which he had reached artistic maturity and was gaining increasing recognition. In keeping with the tradition of Impressionist painters such as Monet and Sisley, he worked predominantly "en plein air", focusing his attention on light conditions and seasonal changes in the landscape. Loiseau frequently stayed in the region along the Oise, north of Paris, which became one of his preferred subjects. He repeatedly returned to the same locations in order to study and capture different times of day and seasons in his paintings. The work depicts a calm scene along the riverbank: a barge lies motionless on the water, while the trees along the shore are bare, suggesting the transitional period between late autumn and early winter. The sky is overcast, and the atmosphere appears damp and cool. Muted, cool tones dominate—greys, blues, and desaturated greens—complemented by earthy nuances of ochre and brown, particularly in the boat and along the riverbank. The overall mood is calm and self-contained. Loiseau, regarded as a sensitive and reserved personality, transforms an unassuming riverscape into a scene of quiet, poetic intensity. Gustave Loiseau malt "Péniche sur l’Oise" im Jahr 1900, in einer Phase, in der er seine künstlerische Reife erreicht hat und zunehmend Anerkennung findet. Thanks to his contract with the Parisian art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, Gustave Loiseau enjoyed a solid financial foundation by around 1906. This independence afforded him the freedom to explore landscapes beyond Paris and to deliberately seek out locations particularly suited to his Impressionist depictions. It was in this context that he discovered the village of Herblay, whose charming surroundings along the Seine had already attracted artists such as Maximilien Luce and Paul Signac. Described by Didier Imbert as a chronicler of the Seine, Loiseau here again directs his gaze toward a deliberately rural stretch of the river. Any references to village life are absent, with the exception of the bateau-lavoir, prominently placed in the foreground. This motif recalls his Impressionist predecessor Alfred Sisley, who had already featured the floating washhouse in his views of the 1880s. Loiseau reveals himself here at the height of his artistic powers: with light, buoyant brushstrokes and delicate layers of color, he masterfully captures the interplay of light and color. Dank des Vertrags mit dem Pariser Kunsthändler Paul Durand-Ruel geniesst Gustave Loiseau um 1906 bereits eine solide finanzielle Grundlage. Diese Unabhängigkeit verschafft ihm die Freiheit, die Landschaften ausserhalb von Paris zu erkunden und gezielt jene Orte aufzusuchen, die sich besonders für seine impressionistischen Darstellungen eignen. So entdeckt er auch das Dorf Herblay, dessen reizvolle Umgebung direkt an der Seine bereits Künstler wie Maximilien Luce oder Paul Signac angezogen haben. Von Didier Imbert als Chronist der Seine beschrieben, richtet Loiseau seinen Blick auch hier auf einen bewusst ländlichen Abschnitt des Flusses. Jegliche Hinweise auf das Dorfleben fehlen, mit Ausnahme des bateau-lavoir, das im Vordergrund zentral platziert ist. Dieses Motiv erinnert an seinen impressionistischen Vorgänger Alfred Sisley, der das schwimmende Waschhaus bereits in seinen Ansichten der 1880er-Jahre aufgreift. Loiseau zeigt sich hier auf dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens: Mit leichten, federnden Pinselstrichen und feinen Farbschichten fängt er das Spiel von Licht und Farbe meisterhaft ein. Die sommerliche Szene entfaltet ein harmonisches Zusammenspiel von Himmel, Wasser und Uferlandschaft, gespiegelt in der schimmernden Oberfläche der Seine.

Januar 2016, der das Gemälde in sein Werkverzeichnis aufnehmen wird. Während Durand-Ruel das Gemälde auf 1900 datiert, hält Imbert die 1920er-Jahre für wahrscheinlicher. Meist scheint bei den Gemälden der Impressionisten die Sonne – es ist Frühling oder Sommer. Gustave Loiseau malte jedoch den Quai de Pothuy in Pontoise zu allen Jahreszeiten und so sehen wir hier eine Winterlandschaft ganz wie er sie mochte: mit bedecktem Himmel, etwas dunstig und mit angedeutetem Tauwetter bei sich in den ins Violette gehenden Rottönen manifestierender Dämmerung. Somit erreichte Loiseau ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal, das ihn von anderen Impressionisten unterschied und dessen Mittel er in ein lebendiges und hoch atmosphärisch wirkendes Ganzes übersetzte. Der Maler zählt zu den bedeutenden Postimpressionisten Frankreichs. Aufgewachsen in Pontoise, ermöglichte ihm eine Erbschaft, sich der Malerei zuzuwenden und an der École des arts décoratifs zu studieren. 1890 zog er nach Pont-Aven, in den Kreis jener Maler, die für eine Stilschule bekannt geworden sind – wie etwa Émile Henri Bernard (1868–1941) oder Paul Gauguin (1848–1903). Seine erste Ausstellung fand 1893 im Salon des Indépendants statt, dann 1895 im Salon de la Société Nationale, sowie auch in den Impressionisten-Ausstellungen 1890 und 1896. Loiseau war vor allem für seine Landschaften und Straßenszenen bekannt. In den Folgejahren reiste er auch in die Normandie, wo er Hügel und Flüsse der Region malte. An old paper label inscribed in ink “Loiseau 12565 Le quai de Beynac 1926” (characteristic of Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris) verso on the center strip of the stretcher frame. With wonderfully light brushwork reminiscent of Claude Monet, the impressionist Gustave Loiseau has depicted the little village of Beynac along the Dordogne river in south-western France. In this work, as in so many of his riverscapes, the picture plane is divided between the depiction of the buildings along the bank on the right and the peacefully flowing river opposite them. While the broad street featuring figures and a wagon virtually invites viewers to explore Beynac, we initially see trees and shrubs on the left, and they only permit us to view the river at some distance. A blue and violet sky with a vibrant display of clouds appears above the scene. Loiseau has used his dynamic and sometimes impasto dabs of paint to generate a richly textured surface that enables viewers to sense the wind as well as the golden light. Gustave Loiseau came from a distinguished family of tradesmen based in Pontoise. After training as a decorator, an inheritance enabled him to dedicate himself entirely to painting. Instead of attending an art school or academy, he learned fundamental late-impressionist chromatic and brush techniques from Paul Gauguin and, particularly, Camille Pissarro. When the gallerist Paul Durand-Ruel placed him under contract in 1897, it marked the beginning of an artistically and financially successful period in which he travelled for many years. In terms of motifs he developed a predilection for riverscapes, which he depicted in delicate, usually realistic colours. Like the painting 'Le Quai de Beynac', which is up for auction here, almost all of his works convey a sense of a timeless idyll untouched by the effects of the industrial revolution.

LES BORDS DE L’EURE EN ÉTÉ Peintre majeur de l’école postimpressionniste, qui tente de dépasser et renouveler les apports de l’Impressionnisme, Gustave Loiseau se forme auprès du peintre Fernand Quignon. Il séjourne à Pont-Aven où il se lie avec Maxime Maufra, Henry Moret et Émile Bernard, et profite des conseils de Paul Gauguin. Il participe à quelques-unes des expositions impressionnistes à Paris dès 1894. Installé à Auvers-sur-Oise puis à Pontoise, pur paysagiste, il est le continuateur de Camille Pissarro et de Claude Monet. : Il travaille comme eux les mêmes motifs en série sous différents jours afin d’en saisir les impressions éphémères. Son intérêt se porte sur le rendu des variations atmosphériques, au fil des saisons et des climats. Sa touche transmet à la perfection la vibration lumineuse des paysages qu’il observe. Notre grand tableau, peint en 1901, représente les bords de l’Eure en été. Le méandre de la rivière traverse la composition, miroir des reflets du ciel et des frondaisons, qui s’enrichissent ponctuellement de touches de couleur pure. Les jaunes vifs du premier plan résonnent en contrepoint des bleu-vert profonds du bosquet d’arbres, tandis que l’œil respire en s’échappant vers le coin de ciel exécuté d’une touche plus large. Der Maler zählt zu den bedeutenden Postimpressionisten Frankreichs. Aufgewachsen in Pontoise, ermöglichte ihm eine Erbschaft, sich der Malerei zuzuwenden und an der École des arts décoratifs zu studieren. 1890 zog er nach Pont-Aven, in den Kreis jener Maler, die für eine Stilschule bekannt geworden sind – wie etwa Émile Henri Bernard (1868 – 1941) oder Paul Gauguin (1848 – 1903). Seine erste Ausstellung fand 1893 im Salon des Indépendants statt, dann 1895 im Salon de la Société Nationale, sowie auch in den Impressionisten-Ausstellungen 1890 und 1896. Loiseau war vor allem für seine Landschaften und Straßenszenen bekannt. In den Folgejahren reiste er auch in die Normandie, wo er Hügel und Flüsse der Region malte. Gustave was initially apprenticed to a decorator until an inheritance from his grandmother allowed him to devote himself to his art. Although he received some formal training from the artist Jean-Louis Forain, Loiseau was frustrated by the more academic aspects of his teaching and was drawn instead to the freer practice of plein air painting-working directly from nature and capturing the landscape before him with immediacy and fidelity. His style owes much to the first generation of Impressionist painters, notably Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley. In 1890, Loiseau joined the renowned artist's colony at Pont-Aven in Brittany where he was befriended by Henry Moret and Maxime Maufra, themselves both proteges of Paul Gauguin. Loiseau learnt much from Gauguin and whilst he remained somewhat on the periphery of the group, their influence undoubtedly emboldened the young artist to embrace a stronger, bolder colour palette. It was during his time in Pont-Aven that Loiseau experimented with pointillism. While he ultimately forged his own path, the experience informed the development of his mature style, particularly the short, feathery brushstrokes that would become a hallmark of his work.In 1893, Loiseau exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, and with the encouragement of Monet and Renoir, he came to the notice of Paul Durand-Ruel, the eminent gallerist and promoter of Impressionism. A contract with Durand-Ruel followed in 1897 and afforded Loiseau the freedom and financial means to travel extensively throughout France. In 1884, Loiseau's family had moved to Pontoise where they had family connections and the pretty hilltop town on the river Oise just north of Paris became an important source of inspiration for the young painter. In 1903, off the proceeds of successful sales, Gustave bought land on the banks of the river in Pontoise and proceeded to build a home and studio there. The small provincial town of Elbeuf lies on the banks of the river Seine just south of Rouen. Loiseau was captivated by the river and spent many years painting the Seine and its tributaries throughout Normandy. Such was his passion for the subject that he earned the accolade historiographer of the Seine. He returned to Elbeuf and its spectacular bridge on a number of occasions, faithfully recording it from the early morning to dusk. This repetition of a favoured subject at different points of the day and year is typical of Loiseau's work. The process was deeply indebted to Claude Monet and allowed him to explore how the different light levels and seasons affected the view before him. The present work, executed in 1911, shows the bridge in full sunlight at the height of the day. The buildings on the far bank are bathed in a warm, rich light with the reflections on the water comprising many multi-coloured brushstrokes so synonymous with the Post-Impressionist style. The view of a bridge traversing a river with buildings in the hinterland clearly appealed to Loiseau and it was a construct that he painted on other occasions, for example, The Iron Bridge, St. Ouen (Fig. 2) dating from 1908, in which the rail bridge cuts through the composition to the town on the far bank. Le Pont d'Elbeuf, le soleil reflects Gustave Loiseau's ability to infuse a sense of vitality and atmosphere into his landscapes. The quick, fluid brushstrokes help convey a sense of movement in the water beneath the bridge and his characteristic use of light, colour, and a masterful understanding of nature's movements capture the beauty of a moment. It is a perfect testament to the Impressionist spirit of exploring the world through the lens of light and colour.

This work is registered at the Didier Imbert archive. The stately church of Bennecourt, with its pointed tower, was painted by Loiseau several times and under various weather conditions. In the present painting, he depicts the church—like many of his motifs, a part of the Île-de-France region—nestled in a quiet, idyllic winter landscape. The colors are soft and harmonious, primarily rendered in delicate pastel tones. The light is gentle and subdued, emphasizing the slightly misty atmosphere of the wintry scene. Das Werk ist im Archiv von Didier Imbert registriert. Die stattliche Kirche von Bennecourt mit ihrem spitzen Turm hat Loiseau mehrfach und bei verschiedenen Wetterlagen gemalt. In dem vorliegenden Gemälde zeigt er die Kirche, die – wie so viele seiner Motive – Teil der Region Île-de-France ist, eingebettet in eine ruhige, idyllische Winterlandschaft. Die Farben sind sanft und harmonisch, vorwiegend in zarten Pastelltönen gehalten. Das Licht ist weich und gedämpft und betont die etwas neblige Stimmung der winterlichen Szenerie. Die leicht pastosen Pinselstriche verleihen dem Bild Tiefe und Struktur. Sie heben die dünne Schneeschicht hervor, die den Boden bedeckt, sowie die dichten, nebelverhangenen Wolken am Himmel.
