LAMBERT LOMBARD 1505 Liège - 1566 ibid. THE ANNUNCIATION TO SAINT JOACHIM Oil on oak panel (arched at the top). 116 x 81 cm (F. 135 x 96 cm). Verso: Three vertically inserted battens on the reverse. Part. old rest., part. min. old retouching, three min. rest. vertical cracks due to tension. Frame. Accompanied by an expert opinion by Gwendolyne Denhaene: "Dear Professor, Thank you very much for your letter, as well as for the photograph and the slide of your painting. You are truly a fortunate man, for you possess one of the very rare paintings that can be attributed to Lombard with some degree of certainty. For years I had been searching for this painting; at one time I had obtained a photograph of it from the Rijksbureau voor Kunstdocumentatie in The Hague. In 1957 the picture was in the collection of Kurt Goldschmidt in Düsseldorf, after which its whereabouts became unknown. The Marburg Photo Archive likewise had no knowledge of its location. You can therefore imagine how delighted I was to rediscover this work. This panel, depicting the Annunciation to Joachim, is the counterpart to the painting in the Musée de l'Art Wallon, The Rejected Offering of Joachim (see fig. 16 in my article on the paintings of L. L.). The dimensions, the shape of the panel, the clothing and the sandals of Joachim all support this connection. In my opinion, the panel in the Musée de l'Art Wallon is the work that comes closest to Lombard's graphic production, and I believe that your painting is likewise unmistakably a work by this artist. The weaknesses that may be observed in it are, in my view, due to the fact that Lombard was not an outstanding painter. It is also possible that members of his workshop contributed to its execution. Another interesting detail: the dog appearing at the feet of the shepherds in your painting is also found on a panel from the Saint-Denis Altarpiece (Saint Dionysius before Fescennius, see fig. 16 in my article). Since only very few securely attributed works by Lombard are known, despite the fact that he was active for more than forty years, your painting certainly represents an important contribution to the rediscovery of this artist. I am therefore very grateful that you contacted me and kindly sent me the slide, which gives me an impression of the colours of the painting. May I ask whether it would be possible to see your painting in person during my next stay in Belgium (between June and September). Hoping to hear from you soon, I remain, Yours sincerely, Gwendolyne Denhaene P.S. I am sending you, under separate cover, the article to which I have referred several times." Lombard, Lambert (nach/after) Lüttich 1505 - 1566 32,5 x 54 cm The Washing of the Feet. Oil/panel, inscribed in Latin at the bottom centre of the cartouche: "Omnium Dominus ad Servorum Suorum Pedes Lavandos se in genua Prosternit Singularis Humilitatis Exemplum" (The Lord of all kneels down to wash the feet of his servants as a unique example of humility). From a private German collection. The washing of feet is a ritual act of hospitality originating in the Orient; Jesus, too, performed this ritual and washed his disciples’ feet during the Last Supper, on the eve of his crucifixion. The highly figurative motif created by Lambert Lombard was already widely circulated during the artist’s lifetime through a copperplate engraving published by Hieronymus Cock (Antwerp c. 1501 - 1570) between 1554 and 1568. This painting is therefore likely to be a copy made fairly soon after the engraving was made. Lombard, Lambert (nach/after) Lüttich 1505 - 1566 32,5 x 54 cm Die Fußwaschung.
The saint, whole-length to right in profile, writing with a quill pen and resting the book on the capital of a classical column, accompanied by his eagle attribute. ---This engraving from a series showing Christ and the apostles and St Paul (Hollstein 9-22) is a typical work from the School of Liège from the mid 16th Century. Lambert Suavius (1510-1567) and his brother-in-law Lambert Lombard introduced the Italian renaissance art of Marcantonio Raimondi and the school of Raphael and translated it into Northern humanism. The apostles are shown as a full- length figure standing in architectural ruins. The monumental, idealized figure stands almost like a Roman statue , calm and self-contained, with a sculptural quality. While the figures are Italianate in pose and proportion, the attention to textures and surfaces (stone blocks, foliage, drapery folds) reflects the Northern engraving tradition. This engraving was engraved by Lambert Suavius (1510-1567) who added his name on the print.
European, an antique oil on panel depicting a bust length portrait of Saint wearing a red robe and halo, accompanied by a young angel shown in profile. The composition reflects traditional devotional imagery, with softly modeled features and warm tonal contrasts emphasizing the saint's contemplative expression and paternal presence. The intimate scale and focused arrangement highlight the spiritual interaction between the figures. No apparent artist signature.Presented in a molded wood frame with a name plaque reading Lambert Lombard (Luttich, 1505-1566), and retaining a collection label on the verso. Provenance Ortolani family collection, Rome and Montevideo. Work Size: 19 x 13 in. Dimensions: 25 X 19.5 X 1.5 in.
Oil on wood representing Christ supported Virgin mother and by St. John Evangelist, group dominated by the Holy Spirit, 3rd quarter of the 16th century. Polychrome and gold carved picture frame. Dim .: 106x67cm. The work under consideration was part of the Barros Collection, Porto, sold at auction in 1947. It belonged to Commander Arthur Cupertino de Miranda who in 1978 asked for na opinion of the work. Through na ordinary friend, the poet Alberto Serpa, the historian Luis Reis-Santos (former director of the Machado de Castro Museum), writes a note about the work. According to Luís Reis-Santos' This painting is a copy of a composition that has been attributed to Lambert Lombard (1506-1566 / 7), and that there is a beautiful version (circa 1550) in magnificent condition at the National Gallery in London. It is assumed that the prototype is from Bellini or from any other painter of the Venetian School: but the original has not yet been found. Several copies are known as the Barros Collection, which should date from the 3rd quarter of the 16th century. Bibliography: Catalog of the Collection Barros, Porto (p.158, lot n.1421g.
